Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared-Chapter 21 - Two Brothers
21: Chapter 21 Two Brothers
21 -21 Two Brothers
In the busiest part of the city where Gu Fan and the others lived, an eighty-eight-storey skyscraper stood majestically, emitting a glow strong enough to penetrate the darkness even at night.
In an office on the eighty-seventh floor, a woman dressed in professional attire – a sky-blue shirt and a black skirt – sat in an office chair with her arms crossed and legs up, coldly watching the scenery outside.
The entire cityscape was in full view.
The woman was very beautiful, her glossy black hair flowed over her shoulders, nicely complementing her fair skin.
Her exquisite makeup added to her femininity, yet she had an air of forbiddance.
She swung her leg back and forth, her countenance one of disappointment and impatience while the men in front of her appeared terrified as if they had done something wrong.
“Sister Leng, we were careless and were discovered, we’re sorry…” These men had been previously observing the area around Gu Fan’s house and had been discovered.
They had been summoned due to their exposure and were unsure of what lay ahead.
Sister Leng said coldly, “Failure is failure, I don’t want to hear any explanations.
You must not appear in front of these students again.
Do you understand my meaning?”
“But Sister Leng, don’t send us to other places for assignments.
We don’t want to leave!” The men immediately knelt down.
These grown men behaving helplessly like women showed how much power this woman, referred to as Sister Leng, wielded.
Sister Leng was indifferent, “If it weren’t for our insiders at the police station who informed us to retreat in advance, you would have been exposed.”
The men looked wronged, “We didn’t expect these university students to be so alert.
We thought we were being very careful.”
Sister Leng seemed unreceptive.
Just then, the office door was pushed open and a man with great poise strode in.
He looked at Sister Leng and then at the men with pitiful expressions.
Seeing this man, the others immediately viewed him as their savior and hurriedly pleaded, “Brother Hai, please speak on our behalf.
We really don’t want to be reassigned.”
“Alright, I already know about the situation.
You can leave now.
I have matters to discuss with Sister Leng.” After Hai finished speaking, the men were visibly relieved and quickly left.
Seeing this, Sister Leng was displeased, “Hai, how will you lead your subordinates if you don’t clearly distinguish between rewards and punishments?”
Hai grinned, unworried, “Their exposure this time genuinely wasn’t their fault.
I asked our informant at the police station.
He told me that a policewoman named Su Hui reported it.
It’s easy to evade the suspicion of university students, but it’s hard to deceive the police.”
Hearing his words, Sister Leng was slightly perplexed, “What happened?
Why were we noticed by a police officer?
Did something go wrong?”
Shaking his head, Hai responded, “No, it’s just a coincidence.
The boy recently advertised for a tenant, and this policewoman moved in.”
Sister Leng’s eyebrows furrowed, “It seems we have to be careful from now on.
We mustn’t alert the police.”
Hai nodded, “I looked into this Su Hui’s background.
She’s an elite figure in the police force, calm-minded, highly skilled, and has solved many difficult cases.
Besides, her boyfriend is a high-ranking official in a government agency.
We really can’t afford to annoy them.”
“So, are we giving up on following this Gu Fan?” Sister Leng seemed worried and somewhat unwilling.
To this, Hai immediately reassured, “Based on the information I have, Gu Fan and Lu Yi were not among the fourteen students who entered the secret room, so they should not be our focus.”
Sister Leng was silent for a moment before saying, “But I have a feeling that these two unexpected additions may bring unforeseen changes.”
Hai smiled, “Perhaps you’re overthinking it, Sister Leng.
As long as we keep an eye on the students who entered the secret room, it’s enough.
The new term will begin soon, and once these students enter the university, it will be difficult for us to keep track.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve made my preparations.” Sister Leng said, full of confidence.
Then she asked, as if remembering something, “How is the boss doing?
Does he have any recent instructions?”
Continuing, Hai said, “Initially, the boss told you to stay put.
But clearly, you didn’t take his advice.
So, he’s implicitly approved your actions now.
The boss trusts you a lot, probably because he appreciates your keen insight in identifying those special traits of these university students.”
“Alright, stop praising me.
Are you saying that the boss has fully entrusted this to me?” Sister Leng said while curiously observing Hai, anticipating his next words.
Hai nodded slightly, “Yes, the boss sent me this time to convey his words; he believes that you can handle the situation well and get to the bottom of all the secrets.”
“If the boss has indeed given me full authority, there’s no need for you, his top henchman, to actually come here yourself.
What else do you want to know?” Sister Leng’s tone and gaze were full of implication, as if she could see through everyone’s secrets.
Hai gave a small smile, “Yes, the boss wanted me to hear about the second student’s disappearance, a girl named Li Xiaoyan.
You must have already sent someone to follow up.”
At this, Sister Leng shook her head, “I only sent someone to follow up after knowing that the second college student disappeared.
I didn’t expect that the other party could act so quickly.
If we do not hurry up, I fear we might lose track of it.”
Hai continued to probe, “What’s the progress with the police?
Any clues found?”
Sister Leng sighed, “Their methods are very secretive, using the chaotic crowd as cover, and successfully evaded surveillance by targeting Li Xiaoyan when she was alone.
Although I don’t want to admit it, they are one step ahead of us.”
Hearing this, Hai was silent for a long while, seemingly deep in thought.
Glancing casually at the pair of shapely legs, he was suddenly lost in thought.
Sister Leng’s voice interrupted him, “So, how are things on your end?”
Hai shook his head repeatedly, “Every day, we send a few people disguised as tourists to the ancient town, looking here and there, using drones to reconnoitre, but the residents of the ancient town act completely normal.
There’s not a single abnormal movement, not even one person has left the town, isn’t that strange?”
“Yes, the strangest part is that they’re too normal.
With such events happening, it’s impossible for them to just sit still.” Sister Leng furrowed her brow while deep in thought, her finger supporting her chin.
She was facing a big problem.
At this point, Jie spoke, “The boss also wanted me to relay a message that you should bear the responsibility for any failure since you’re given full authority.
If the operation failed, it’s up to you.”
Upon hearing this, Sister Leng felt a chill down her spine, her previous calmness replaced by fear, as if the big boss was some sort of demonic presence.
“Okay, I’ve delivered my message.
I also need to return to my post.
In fact, my pressure is no less than yours, but unfortunately, since we’ve chosen to follow the big boss, we should know what we’re getting into.” With these words, Hai rose from his seat and left the office, leaving Sister Leng alone in the eerily silent room.
Soon after, Hai left the skyscraper and dialed a number.
An excited voice answered, “Bro, when are you coming back?
We haven’t played a game for ages, and I can’t find a worthy opponent.”
“Jie, don’t worry, I’ll get this situation wrapped up soon.
Also, don’t just play all day.
You have to make sure to study as well.” Hai advised his younger brother, a feeling of brotherly affection arising in his heart.
“Don’t worry, bro.
I came first in our class this exam, even won a scholarship.
I haven’t wasted the tuition you’ve paid.
I’ve been studying hard.” Hearing Jie’s response eased Hai’s heart.
He was delighted, “That’s more like it.
If you’re studying seriously, I should finish my work as soon as possible to spend time with you.”
Jie was also thrilled, “Bro, I’ve been hitting more and more three-pointers.
I’m improving daily.
If you get lazy, you won’t be able to beat me anymore.”
“Wow, it looks like I need to train my basketball skills.
I hope we are all progressing the next time we play.” Hai seemed excited while talking about it.
After a while, the two brothers bid each other farewell and hung up.
After hanging up, Hai looked back at the skyscraper, recalling their boss, with a sigh in his heart.
He knew the work would only become busier, leaving him less time for his family.
But since he chose this path, there was no turning back, not in Hai’s heart.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the city, inside an old factory converted into an indoor basketball court, the sweltering summer heat didn’t quench the enthusiasm for the sport.
Many people were showcasing their skills.
Jie, a handsome college student with a determined look, put his phone in his bag outside the court.
After a gulp of water, the feeling of dehydration settling after a heavy workout made him excited, and he felt he could play another three hundred rounds.
At that moment, Jie noticed a person walking into the court.
It was the one he’d invited to play.
He couldn’t help but wave and shout, “Over here!
I’m over here!
I’ve secured the court.
You guys are so late, Gu Fan, and Lu Yi.”
“Haha, we’re grateful you secured such a good spot.” Gu Fan and Lu Yi jogged over, laughing a whole lot.
Like everyone else, they started playing enthusiastically, oblivious to the fact that their fates had become intertwined.
