Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared-Chapter 28 - Doubts on Intuition
28: Chapter 28: Doubts on Intuition
28 -28: Doubts on Intuition
Special incidents occurred almost every year during our university days.
Incidents like conflicts escalating into brawls, with someone ending up getting stabbed.
Or someone committing suicide over emotional issues, or resorting to threats to prevent a breakup.
I remember when Gu Fan and Lu Yi first got to university, a professor joked about a river on campus that two students threw themselves into every year, and the quota for this year was already filled so the new students should not join in the fun.
The joke made Gu Fan and Lu Yi laugh and wonder who could be foolish enough to take their own life over a relationship.
Later, Gu Fan actually saw a man standing in the middle of a busy road after a breakup, letting cars zoom past him.
Eventually, the counselor had to call several male students to drag him away.
One night, while Lu Yi was in the washroom, he heard a thud outside that nearly gave him a heart attack.
He had no idea what was going on and didn’t pay much attention to it, until the next day when he found out that it was the sound of someone throwing themselves off a building and hitting the railings.
After witnessing so many such incidents, Gu Fan realized that there really were people like that and their outlook on life was indeed different.
It made Gu Fan and Lu Yi grateful for their upbringing.
They had heard news of a university dorm catching fire due to an illegal electrical connection, causing a tragic incident.
Everyone had heard so many similar stories, so although Qian Chuan’s disappearance made everyone sigh, it didn’t really cause much commotion.
Under normal circumstances, Gu Fan and Lu Yi would do the same as most people, mourn briefly and move on.
But they knew that Qian Chuan’s disappearance was not so simple.
What was the truth hidden behind it?
During his lunch break, instead of going to other people’s dorms, Gu Fan sat on a bench by the road, arms crossed, deep in thought.
The more he thought about it, the more bizarre it felt.
Really bizarre indeed.
If someone had deliberately kidnapped Qian Chuan, it would not have been possible to do it on campus.
They would have had to wait for a chance outside.
But how would they know when Qian Chuan would leave campus?
Firstly, it is impossible that they knew in advance that Qian Chuan was going to sneak out that night, as it was a spontaneous decision by Qian Chuan.
Nobody should have known about it and prepared beforehand.
Since the first possibility was ruled out, the second was that it was a supernatural event.
Plus, the police didn’t find anything suspicious at the scene.
It was indeed bizarre.
And then there was the third and most likely possibility – someone had been keeping an eye on Qian Chuan all the while, knew that he was planning to sneak out, and immediately alerted their accomplices to be ready.
But who could have accomplished this?
Gu Fan’s seat was directly facing the school supermarket.
He stared covertly at a new employee who was still unfamiliar with the cash register.
Lin Xi came close to being late for the last opening ceremony because of this new supermarket employee who didn’t know how to operate the register.
If Gu Fan had to suspect someone, it would most likely be a new and unfamiliar face.
Most importantly, when Du Jun and Qian Chuan found out that the supermarket was out of beer, Qian Chuan suggested sneaking out.
They had this conversation inside the supermarket, which the cashier must have overheard.
“My God, am I becoming Sherlock Holmes?” Gu Fan frowned, deep in thought.
There was still one thing that was odd to him.
Even if the new employee knew that Qian Chuan was going to sneak out, how would he know where he would leave?
The campus was so big that it would take ten minutes to go around it by car.
Gu Fan was certain that Qian Chuan was not followed when he was sneaking out.
Gu Fan only saw Qian Chuan and didn’t see anyone else.
“I can figure this out.
I can solve the mystery.” For some reason, Gu Fan felt an inexplicable drive.
He wanted to rack his brain to solve the puzzle and confront the person behind this.
Suddenly, Gu Fan thought of a possibility.
If the other side had enough people to station around the school, no matter where Qian Chuan sneaked out from, they could find out quickly.
So Gu Fan called Su Hui immediately and suggested a new direction for the investigation – to check all the surveillance footage around the school for suspicious people.
“Boy, you are full of ideas.
Seems like you have the talent for being a detective.” Su Hui praised Gu Fan briefly before starting the new round of investigation based on his suggestion.
Gu Fan was naturally hoping that Su Hui would discover something, but no matter what, Gu Fan regarded the new supermarket clerk as the most suspicious.
At this moment, the newcomer store assistant in the school supermarket had gone to the restroom, took the opportunity to go to a less crowded corner, and dialed a phone call: “Hey, Sister Leng, a guy named Gu Fan seems to be sitting on a bench opposite the supermarket all the time, and he seems to be watching me.”
A very angry voice came from the other end of the phone: “Idiot, how were you found out?
You know how much effort I’ve put to position you in the school?”
“Sorry Sister Leng, I don’t know why either.
I just go to work at the supermarket every day, not doing anything extra.” The new clerk felt wronged.
He hadn’t done anything, so how had his identity been revealed?
“Alright, for now, do nothing, be careful and act normal, don’t disappoint me again.” Having said this, Sister Leng hung up and glared angrily at the university.
At this moment, Sister Leng was sitting in a coffee shop opposite the university, drinking coffee.
They had bought this coffee shop to use as a temporary base, convenient for them to keep an eye on every move of the students in the school.
“This Gu Fan seems to be quite clever.” Sister Leng said, simultaneously pulling up Gu Fan’s file, she reviewed his background over and over: just an ordinary university student from a common family, with okay academic performance.
He had not received any awards during his time at university, and he had not caused any trouble.
He was utterly ordinary.
A woman dressed like a waitress standing next to her whispered, “Sister Leng, our people might have been suspected even if they haven’t been exposed.
Should we call him back?”
In response, Sister Leng shook her head: “If we call him back as soon as there’s suspicion, isn’t that admitting to Gu Fan that there is indeed something wrong?
This would expose more of our people instead.
So, let’s just hold our positions, do nothing, I don’t believe that such a young university student can cause that much trouble.
We will not lose our composure just because of a university student’s suspicion.”
“Okay, Sister Leng!” The woman had just finished speaking when she received a phone call.
After finishing the call, her expression seemed slightly unnatural.
Sister Leng asked with curiosity, “What’s wrong?
Your face…?”
The woman replied, “Su Hui is currently investigating all the surveillance footage near the school from the day Qian Chuan disappeared, looking for any suspicious characters.”
Sister Leng frowned upon hearing this, “How did this Su Hui think of this?
This could be troublesome.
Our people didn’t know from where Qian Chuan would scale the wall, so they had to circle around the school multiple times to keep up with Qian Chuan.
They definitely would have been caught on surveillance footage.
Su Hui will surely find them.”
“So, what do we do?” The people underneath were all very nervous.
They knew that once the police had their eyes on them, it would be equivalent to being abandoned by their organisation.
But Sister Leng waved her finger, “Rest assured, it’s okay.
We have our people in the police station.
Su Hui can’t go through all the surveillance footage on her own, and our people in the police station know what to do.”
At these words, the people underneath finally heaved a sigh of relief.
They had been truly frightened.
However, Sister Leng couldn’t be calm.
Holding up her chin with one hand, she looked out of the window at the university, seemed a little distracted and began talking to herself, “Su Hui, why is it always you?
Why do you have to meddle in such muddy waters?”
A person next to her chimed in, “Excuse me, Sister Leng, do you remember last time when our people were watching Gu Fan’s house, and they almost got discovered by Su Hui?
It was lucky that we got early warning from our inside person at the police station, which allowed us to retreat in time.
Otherwise, we would’ve been in trouble.
This Su Hui has clashed with us not once or twice.
I wonder if we should think about moving her away.
I am really afraid if we encounter her again, we may risk being exposed.”
In response to this, Sister Leng shook her head, “Su Hui likes operating in this area and, moreover, Su Hui’s boyfriend comes from a complicated background.
It’s very difficult to move her.
And then, the moment we start targeting Su Hui, given this policewoman’s investigative abilities, she might just discover our tricks.
So, let’s avoid her if we can.”
“Okay, Sister Leng, we know what to do now.” Once everything was said, Sister Leng’s underlings took their leave, and Sister Leng sunk into deep thought, “If it were me, I wouldn’t make two university students disappear from the same school in a row.
This would definitely cause a sensation.
You’ve always been cautious in carrying out your work.
If I’m guessing correctly, you’ll wait.
Wait until everything is calm and quiet, wait until the students go on holiday before you make your move.
I know you’ve waited many years, so you must have the patience to proceed step by step.
But that’s okay, whether it’s one or two years, I’ll play along with you till the end.”
In the midst of her thoughts, Sister Leng unintentionally glanced over Gu Fan’s profile again and thought this young man was not too bad looking, just a bit too young and not to her taste.
