Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Lies Cut from the Same Cloth

Upon hearing Hannah say this, Iris was surprised, but there was another emotion in her eyes that Hannah couldn’t understand. Yet, Hannah felt there seemed to be a hint of pity in Iris’s gaze.

Why would she show her such an expression?

Iris reached out to tidy Hannah’s hair and asked her, "Is there anyone you care about in this world?"

"Since I was born, I’ve lived in a world of exploitation and lies."

Hannah looked at Iris’s face, uttering words she found breathless even for herself, "My mother is adept at deceiving people; she uses various means to weave in and out of men’s lives. As her child, I’m merely a tool."

Iris listened silently; Hannah’s face was pale and indifferent, as if she was recounting something unrelated to herself.

"So I never understood what the word ’care’ means. I become whatever the person I meet is like, and I have no definition for myself."

Hannah sighed, trying to hold Iris’s hand, "But the time spent by your side has truly been the happiest in my life. I’ve felt the meaning of being alive, spending my days with you, accompanying you, cooking for you, all of it makes me happy."

If one day she really had to stand on the opposite side of Iris, Hannah thought, she wouldn’t be willing to.

Because Iris was like magic, her love and hate were plainly written, and her lazy unwillingness to disguise brought a powerful impact, as if Hannah knew in her heart, maybe Iris still despised her, and for some reason, that was why she treated her so well.

"Sis-in-law, I’m afraid your kindness is a trap."

Hannah lowered her voice, "If I jump, I will die even more miserably."

Iris’s shoulders tensed slightly, and after a while, she said, "Life is a series of whirlpools. If you regret it and want to return to Jonas, I can still send you back."

"No, I want to stay here and take care of you."

Hannah shook her head firmly, "You’re pregnant, and I want to improve your diet."

After saying this, Hannah turned her gaze toward the ceiling, as if in thought, "Tell me whether you prefer sour or spicy? I’ll make a small dish for you later."

As she spoke of what she was good at, her tone suddenly became lively, "I wonder if this baby will be a boy or a girl, Iris, do you prefer boys or girls?"

Without thinking, Iris said, "Of course, I like girls. You prefer girls too, don’t you?"

This sentence seemed like a hint, and Hannah was momentarily stunned; she snapped back and said, "Yes, girls are gentle, lovely, and wonderful. I certainly like girls better."

Just after saying this, her hand trembled slightly. Iris glanced at her and then turned to sit in front of the dining table, "Has Jonas contacted you recently?"

Hannah almost dropped the dish she was holding and instinctively shook her head, "No."

"Alright..." Iris, with her chin resting on her hand, looked young and full of energy, not at all like she had already had a child. At this moment, she was mumbling, "Logically, Jonas shouldn’t be able to sit still..."

A million thoughts flashed through Hannah’s mind unsaid. She could only scramble some words to get through the situation. After Iris finished eating and went to work, Hannah collapsed on the couch, her phone vibrating incessantly, and she answered.

"Did Iris go to work?"

"Yes."

"I’ll come find you tomorrow night."

Jonas’s voice was cold, "Recently, you’ve reported less about Iris to me. What’s the situation?"

"Maybe Iris is wary of me now."

Hannah lied, just as she lied to Lachlan and Iris before.

"Any new developments with her?"

"She—" The words "is pregnant" were on the tip of Hannah’s tongue, but she couldn’t say them.

Jonas thrived on tormenting others. If he knew Iris was pregnant, would it incite his animalistic desires even more?
