Chapter 60: Chapter 60: The Former Luna

I walked behind Janice through the long corridor that led to Lady Bernice’s private wing.

The farther we went, the quieter the pack house became.

Most members rarely came to this part of the building. It was reserved for the former Luna and a few attendants who served her daily needs. Even warriors avoided lingering here unless they were summoned.

It was as if no one dared to come too close. As if afraid that they would cross a boundary.

I never understood why the power in the Night claw pack is so segregated. But that isn’t my problem.

Lady Bernice had ruled this pack beside the former Alpha for decades. Even after stepping down, her influence still lingered like a shadow over every decision made in the Night Claw pack.

Some people said that she was just a woman hiding in the shadow of Alpha Demon, but for someone like me, who kept her head down and heard things I wasn’t supposed to sometimes, I knew better than that.

That woman is strong and not to be trifled with. In fact, I was wondering why such a woman would show concern towards me and even assign me maids to take care of my daily life for no reason.

Janice walked ahead of me with small, eager steps. She didn’t try to hide the satisfaction on her face and it was quite amusing.

She clearly believed that once Lady Bernice heard about the scene in the library, I would be reprimanded. Maybe even stripped of the Luna title or punished.

What she didn’t understand was that the title meant nothing to me. If anything, losing it would make my life simpler.

But I remained silent as I walked, curious about what was going to happen later.

When we finally stopped in front of the large oak doors, Janice knocked lightly.

"Enter." The voice was calm and controlled.

It was clearly the voice of someone who knows what they are doing and what they want.

Janice opened the door and gestured for me to go inside. She was bowing to me but I could tell she didn’t want to. However, that never bothered me.

The room was large, but it wasn’t decorated like the luxurious spaces most powerful women preferred. Instead, it was elegant in a reserved way. Tall bookshelves lined the walls, a fireplace crackled softly in the corner, and the scent of tea leaves drifted through the air.

Everything screamed elegant. But one thing I noticed that I wasn’t fully aware of was how the room lacked the presence of Alpha Demon.

Lady Bernice sat near the window in a high-backed chair, reading a book. She resembled the wealthy ladies I used to see in historical English dramas.

She didn’t look up immediately when I entered.

Janice bowed slightly and announced.

"Lady Bernice, Luna Valerie is here."

That sounded so awkward to me especially because the woman had been Luna for decades until a couple of months ago. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The older woman finally closed the book and raised her head.

Her sharp yet gentle eyes lifted to me. They were the same color as Mike’s. You couldn’t mistake them for not being mother and son.

She looked at me as if evaluating me for a while before speaking.

"You may leave," she told Janice calmly.

Janice looked surprised.

"But Lady Bern..." it seemed she had wanted to add her own spice to the story but now was being robbed of the chance.

"I said leave." Lady Bernice said again.

Her tone hadn’t changed, but the authority in it was unmistakable.

"Yes ma’am."

Janice lowered her head quickly and hurried out of the room.

The door closed behind her and now it was just the two of us.

Lady Bernice studied me quietly for several seconds.

"Sit," she said finally.

I took the chair across from her.

Silence stretched between us for a moment as she poured tea into two delicate cups.

"You caused quite a disturbance today," she said casually.

I took one of the cups from the table between us and took a sip of the tea before holding it in my hands as if to warm them and replied just as casually.

"I don’t understand what you mean." I wasn’t trying to play dumb, but what I said had been the truth. Why would that cause a stir?

"You don’t have to be defensive about it." She said softly.

"I just spoke the truth." I insisted.

She picked her own cup and took a sip of the tea.

"That’s not what I asked." Her gaze on me turned a bit sharp.

"Tell me what happened."

I knew her confidants in the pack had already told her everything and now she just wanted to hear my version. But I didn’t believe for one moment that it was because she cared about what I thought.

However, I still told her the whole story. Everything.

I told her about the women married into the pack. About the conversation I had with them, and about my confrontation with Mike in the library.

Anyway, none of these were a secret and if she wanted to find out through other channels, she could. She has the power to do that.

Lady Bernice listened without interrupting.

Her expression remained neutral throughout my explanation.

When I finished, she leaned back in her chair, looking thoughtful.

"So, you encouraged the women to be independent?" She asked quietly.

"Yes." I replied just as softly. Taking another sip of the now cooled tea.

"And Mike wants you to undo it." She asked again and honestly, I couldn’t understand what she was going with all this, but I still answered honestly.

"That’s what he said."

The corner of her mouth twitched slightly. She didn’t seem angry. She wasn’t doing anything I expected her to do.

She tapped her fingers lightly against the armrest.

"Do you understand the consequences of what you’re doing?" Her expression suddenly turned solemn.

I tilted my head to the side as I looked at her.
