Chapter 552: 213 Fixed Plan_2
Zhuang Ruolan immediately commanded, "Prepare the carriage at once; I’m going to Lian Mansion right now."
After Yueyao fell asleep, Xiang Wei took over for the Kitchen Maid.
Xi Yu felt anxious about Xiang Wei sealing off Lanxi Courtyard: "Sister Xiang Wei, the young lady has been poisoned; we must urgently call for a doctor. Just in case..."
Xi Juan interjected from the side, "Tsk, tsk, there’s no just in case."
Xi Yu also slapped her own mouth: "Right, right, right, no just in case, no just in case. Xiang Wei, we can’t just let it be; we must call a doctor."
Xiang Wei felt somewhat good about Xi Juan and Xi Yu’s reaction, and with a grave expression, she said, "Calling the doctor is indeed crucial, but we also need to find out who the mastermind is behind the scenes. If it’s who I think it is, the doctor invited could end up being the young lady’s death warrant."
Xi Yu and Xi Juan naturally understood whom Xiang Wei was referring to after hearing this and their faces visibly changed. If that were the case, the young lady would indeed be in danger.
Xiang Wei tried to calm them down: "Don’t worry, Nanny Hao just went out to send a message to Uncle Master. As long as Uncle Master arrives, nothing will happen."
The two, well trained by Nanny Hao, were hardly reassured by Xiang Wei’s comforting words: "We’ll follow Sister Xiang Wei’s lead."
Lady Mo was utterly surprised when she heard of Zhuang Ruolan’s arrival, entering without notice; it certainly wasn’t for anything good.
Zhuang Ruolan observed Lady Mo, who showed no sign of panic, and suspicion flickered through her mind. If it wasn’t the letter that was problematic, then it was Lady Mo’s deep composure which made it difficult to detect any disturbance. Having arrived at Lian Mansion, she certainly intended to visit Yueyao.
Given Zhuang Ruolan’s influential familial background and her connections with high society, even if she didn’t like Yueyao, she didn’t want to become enemies with Zhuang Ruolan; thus, Lady Mo was rather polite to Zhuang Ruolan.
Zhuang Ruolan claimed she had just come to visit Yueyao, perfectly crafting her reason: "I’ve got these two beautiful pieces of silk that Yueyao, who likes simple and pale colors, will adore!" Zhuang Ruolan brought two pieces of fabric, one in moon-white and one in fragrant color, both of which Yueyao liked very much.
This excuse seemed a bit far-fetched, and Lady Mo mused silently upon hearing it. Sending two fabric pieces could have been managed by sending an old nanny, but she couldn’t find fault with this situation either. After pondering, Lady Mo instructed her maid: "Go and summon Third Young Lady."
Zhuang Ruolan stood up and smiled, "I visited Lanxi Courtyard last time, and the scenery was quite lovely. I’m always sitting around in the estate; it would be good to move about a bit and also take a look at the beautiful landscapes in your mansion." This meant she was heading straight for Lanxi Courtyard.
Lady Mo had wanted to refuse, but Zhuang Ruolan’s posture did not allow for rejection. Lady Mo felt something was amiss, but couldn’t pinpoint any clear problem.
Zhuang Ruolan observed Lady Mo several times but detected no irregularities, which made her more suspicious. Perhaps that letter was really just someone’s nasty prank. Fortunately, she had found a pretext, albeit a strained one, yet it was better than launching a direct accusation.
Lady Mo, until now, hadn’t noticed anything unusual about Lanxi Courtyard, mainly because of Yueyao’s nature. Yueyao rarely moved around, and the maids of Lanxi Courtyard dared not wander about either. Adding that Lanxi Courtyard is far from the main compound, an absence of people from Lanxi Courtyard for a shichen or two wouldn’t have raised any suspicion.
Although Zhuang Ruolan mentioned admiring the scenery, her pace was nowhere slow. Seeing someone sooner would confirm whether the information was true or false.
Upon reaching the entrance of Lanxi Courtyard, the group found that the courtyard gates were shut.
Ru Se, Lady Mo’s maid, came up and said, "Madam, the people in Lanxi Courtyard are not opening the gate." Ru Se had been instructed by Lady Mo to go ahead to Lanxi Courtyard to alert Yueyao, a move also meant to preserve courtesy.
However, when everyone arrived, the gates of Lanxi Courtyard remained closed.
Lady Mo’s expression turned unpleasant: "Didn’t you tell the people at Lanxi Courtyard that I was coming?" It was outrageous for the lady of the house to be kept waiting at the door.
Ru Se bowed her head and said, "Madam, I knocked, but no one inside responded." The truth was that Ru Se had knocked, but the insiders, seeing it was her, decisively chose not to open the door. She sensed something amiss but couldn’t speak out with Zhuang Ruolan nearby, so she gave a meaningful look to Lady Mo instead.
Zhuang Ruolan, ever perceptive, noted Ru Se’s uneasy expression, glanced back at the tightly closed gates of Lanxi Courtyard, and sensing earlier disturbances, fearlessly ordered Cai Yun: "Go and see what exactly is going on."
Cai Yun called out a few times, and the gates were immediately opened.
