Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 131: What a Perfect Match
Even though Vera Yves was not particularly keen on going, she knew that sooner or later, she would have to face such situations to be with Miles Monroe.
She couldn’t quite gauge Penelope Langley’s attitude and wasn’t planning to make a sensational entrance; she just hoped to smoothly get through this "public appearance."
Zoe Monroe accompanied Vera Yves to the styling studio to choose a gown.
"Those rumors must have been leaked by Jane Shea herself! Otherwise, who would know the details of their relationship so well?"
Zoe Monroe maintained her usual disdain towards Jane Shea.
Vera Yves paid little attention to the rumors; out of sight, out of mind, and she was not idle enough to ask Miles about them. Miles also never mentioned them, both sharing an unspoken understanding.
In other words, both were trying their best to maintain appearances.
Worried that Zoe Monroe would never stop talking about it, Vera Yves changed the subject, "How’s it going with your pro jungler?"
Zoe Monroe instantly turned shy, "We turned our online romance into reality."
"Congratulations."
"What’s there to congratulate? Just a casual fling to avoid my mom setting me up on dates!"
Vera Yves ended up choosing a gown worth over three hundred thousand yuan, quite conventional.
Vera Yves skipped the afternoon auction and instead attended the evening banquet with Zoe Monroe.
The scale of the banquet was larger than Vera Yves had anticipated. She saw many prominent figures across various industries; thanks to Mrs. Valentine’s immense influence, coupled with her own diligence, many were not unfamiliar with her.
Many secretly admired her skills; after all, who would have thought that after being dumped by Winston Valentine, she would be completely ostracized from the circle, yet she quickly connected with the young master of the Monroe Family who had just returned to the country.
Quite a few greeted Vera Yves with smiles, and she responded politely, skilled in handling such social interactions.
Apart from greeting Vera Yves when they first met, Penelope Langley did not pay her much attention thereafter. Instead, Miss Hills, a woman who had been on a date with Miles previously, stuck close by after greeting her.
Those who were initially eager to build connections with Vera Yves cooled their attitudes, mostly observing, unsure of the Monroe Family’s intentions.
Vera Yves did not care who was following Penelope Langley; relieved that she didn’t have to feign politeness any longer.
Just as Vera Yves was thinking of finding a quiet corner to stay for a while, Hannah Hayes unexpectedly popped up, surprising Vera Yves, "Why are you here?"
Hannah Hayes gracefully adjusted her hair, "Of course, because I received an invitation."
Hannah Hayes glanced at the woman beside Penelope Langley, moved closer to Vera Yves, "What’s Penelope Langley up to? Calling you here while flaunting another woman; isn’t this blatantly slapping you in the face?"
"With whom one exchanges pleasantries is Aunt Lana’s freedom."
"Times have changed; she doesn’t need to consider us anymore." Hannah Hayes said wryly, "Ultimately, it’s because your father lacks capability..."
Vera Yves had no interest in listening to the same old complaints and thought of finding an excuse to leave in half an hour.
Hannah Hayes soon resumed her cheerful demeanor, networking with others; remarkably, since Vera Yves divorced Winston Valentine, she rarely attended such banquets.
Vera Yves greeted a few unfamiliar guests, patted her cheek, planning to leave, when she noticed Miles entering the ballroom in a sharp suit.
His hair was meticulously groomed, instantly drawing the attention of many; Vera Yves couldn’t help but sigh, truly a charmer.
Spotting Vera Yves after scanning around, Miles’s eyes lit up, a smile gracing his handsome face as he strode toward her, making Vera Yves’s heartbeat inexplicably quicken.
However, Penelope Langley and Miss Hills blocked Miles’s path.
"Miles, Tina has been waiting a long time."
Miles replied helplessly, "I haven’t played the piano in years."
"It’s just a duet." Penelope Langley smiled at him, "It’s not like you’re entering a competition."
"Tina, you go prepare; Miles will be there soon."
After sending Miss Hills off, Penelope Langley dropped her smile, "Your father is negotiating cooperation with the Hills Family. You can’t help with the company, but at least don’t drag us down. Eyes are watching; if you embarrass the Hills Family, you know your father’s temper."
"I won’t duet with Miss Hills." Miles’s expression turned cold, "Vera is my girlfriend; I need to consider her feelings."
Penelope Langley grew angry listening to his firm reply, yet she knew that if he were obedient, he wouldn’t have eloped for love back then.
"Do you think you can do whatever you want outside because of what? Your luxurious lifestyle, your fine upbringing, everything you have, do you think it’s blown in by the wind?"
"Mom!"
"If you don’t go, don’t recognize me as your mother anymore! It’s not the first time you don’t!"
Miles seemed helpless, "I promise you."
Miles made his way to Vera Yves, asking her to wait for him before heading to the stage, flipped the piano lid, while Tina stood with her violin, looking at him with undeniable adoration.
The two were quite a match in both status and appearance, drawing all eyes to the harmonious music.
A picture-perfect couple indeed.
Meanwhile, Penelope Langley and Mrs. Hills chatted happily off stage, the conversations soon shifting to the potential alliance between the Monroe and Hills Families.
The discussions turned to Vera Yves next; for the Monroe Family’s status, the Yves Family was already reaching, not to mention Vera’s divorce.
Sympathetic or disdainful glances fell on Vera Yves and Hannah Hayes.
Looking at the two cooperating seamlessly, Vera Yves couldn’t help but wonder, if Miles didn’t know she secretly had feelings for him, would he have tried to develop something with Miss Hills back then?
Hannah Hayes’s smile vanished, grabbing Vera Yves’s arm, leading her toward the exit, "I knew Penelope Langley didn’t have good intentions; she’s always been two-faced! If she didn’t want you to marry into the Monroe Family, just say so! No need to act so petty!"
Vera Yves refused to leave with her, Hannah Hayes looked at her, frustrated beyond words.
The song ended, and Miles picked up the microphone nearby, walking directly to Vera Yves, extending his hand gallantly, "May I invite this beautiful lady to play a song with me?"
Only then did Hannah Hayes let go.
Vera Yves hesitantly placed her hand in his palm, and together they sat at the piano.
Vera quietly whispered, "I haven’t played in years."
Miles murmured in her ear, "It’s alright, you never played well from the start."
Vera gave him a mock glare.
"How about we play ’Canon’ then."
After trying a few moves, they quickly regained their old groove, the four-handed play combined with their loving gazes, Mrs. Hills angrily left with her daughter.
Penelope Langley suppressed her fury, realizing her beloved son’s rebellious phase hadn’t ended after all these years.
As the song concluded, the audience erupted in enthusiastic applause.
Miles led Vera Yves off the stage holding her hand, when suddenly, a woman burst from the crowd with a glass of red wine, harshly splashing it towards Vera Yves’s face.
