Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 146: Is She Dead?
Vera Yves thought about the bride price that hadn’t been returned and didn’t refuse it anymore.
The two of them found a nearby café to sit down.
Miles Monroe looked at her somewhat pale cheeks, his dark eyes filled with heartache. "Vera, on the morning of our wedding, Jane Shea tried to commit suicide by taking poison and was sent to the hospital. Her agent tried to contact me, but my mom blocked it."
"Later, the doctor said her condition was very bad, she could... she wanted to see me."
Vera looked into his eyes, her voice calm, "So, is she dead?"
Miles looked at her in surprise, "Vera..."
"Probably not." Vera’s expression was indifferent, "Otherwise, how could you have the mood to come find me."
"Vera, it was at the ski resort that I learned Jane had once been pregnant with my child, but later, she was threatened by my father and had an abortion." Miles’ face was ashen, "I feel guilty towards her, I can’t be indifferent to her life or death."
No wonder he drank so much, looked so desolate, because he had learned about this.
Vera pulled out a faint smile, "Miles Monroe, comparing the guilt you feel towards her and the guilt you feel towards me, which is deeper? Your guilt towards me makes you willing to give me marriage, but your guilt towards her makes you able to leave me. It seems, in your heart, I can never measure up to her."
"Vera, I married you because I like you, not because of guilt."
Vera looked at him, it had only been a few days since they last met, but he looked much more haggard, no longer the confident man in her memory.
Vera felt a bit heartache.
There was not only the ethereal love between them but also the bond of having grown up together. Even when he left without saying goodbye, she had silently prayed for him to be well.
"Miles Monroe, if you feel guilty toward me, then take back the bride price." Vera controlled the warmth in her eyes, "Next time we meet, let’s pretend we don’t know each other."
Vera stood up, Miles grabbed her wrist and lowered his voice, "Vera, just wait for me for a little while longer, okay?"
"I don’t want to waste time on things that are meaningless."
His hand gradually lost strength and finally dropped down.
Vera closed her eyes, tears slipped down, she quietly wiped them away as Hannah Hayes’ call came in. Vera answered it and left without looking back.
As soon as they met, Hannah Hayes said displeased, "Why did you leave? Are you ashamed of me?"
Vera asked expressionlessly, "Why didn’t you tell me?"
Hannah snorted, "Do they, the Monroe Family, have the nerve to ask for it? It’s what Miles Monroe owes you!"
"He doesn’t owe me anything."
Before the new year, Hannah Hayes and Harry Yves went to the Monroe Family again and returned the bride price, this time Miles didn’t refuse.
On New Year’s Eve morning, Vera went to the Hillside Villa, light snow was falling.
When she walked into the living room, Tristan Valentine was putting up window decals, with Cleo Sutton directing from the side, "Raise the left side a bit more."
Tristan moved and finally put up the window decal, the two of them exchanged a smile.
Seeing Vera, Cleo Sutton’s eyes brightened, "Dr. Yves, you came at the right time, I prepared a New Year’s gift for you."
Vera helped Cleo Sutton upstairs.
Cleo looked at her clearly thinner face, feeling heartache, "Dr. Yves, no matter how bad things get, they will pass. You have to believe that tomorrow will be better."
Will tomorrow really be better?
It should be; after he left before, didn’t she still start a new life?
It just takes time.
Cleo gave her a red knitted scarf.
"Thinking that after the New Year it might be a few days before seeing you, I thought it would be better to give it to you now. I knitted it myself, you and Rhea each have one." When Cleo mentioned Rae, her eyes softened a lot, "Rhea should be arriving soon."
After helping Cleo with the treatment, Vera headed downstairs and bumped into Rae Rhodes, with Leo Grant following behind.
Her hair was cut short and styled, she wore branded clothes, and looked much thinner overall.
Seeing the meticulously made-up Vera, Rae forced a smile, "Dr. Yves, long time no see."
Vera was a bit surprised; it was the first time she’d seen Rae be polite to her.
"Long time no see."
Vera headed downstairs, Rae couldn’t help but say, "Actually, I don’t like you either."
Vera paused for a moment, Rae had already gone upstairs.
Back at The Yves Family, Hannah Hayes was in the kitchen making dumplings, Vera went in to help her, as the housemaid had already taken time off.
Harry Yves and Mark Yves were putting up spring couplets, keeping busy, generating a bit of New Year’s atmosphere.
The doorbell rang, Mark went to open it and shortly after led Zoe Monroe inside.
Seeing Vera, Zoe embraced her arm as if afraid she might run away, and said pitifully, "Vera, are you going to sever ties with me because of my cousin’s incident?"
Mark complained from the side, "Gosh, Zoe Monroe was told not to bring up that scumbag in front of her!"
Zoe glared at him.
Hannah peeked from the kitchen, saw Zoe, and cast a glance at Mark before turning back to the kitchen.
Vera brought everyone to the living room, "I never said I was severing ties with you."
Zoe nuzzled her arm, "Vera, my cousin had a car accident and is hospitalized..."
Vera was stunned for a moment.
"These days, he’s been working day and night, always working late, and yesterday after work, he crashed into the guardrail. The car’s bumper was knocked off!"
Mark came over, lifting Zoe off the couch, "Whether Miles Monroe is dead or alive has nothing to do with us! Zoe Monroe, I shouldn’t have let a liar like you in!"
"Mark!" Zoe frowned, "You hurt me!"
Mark immediately released her, Zoe quickly dodged to Vera’s side, "Vera, look at him!"
Vera seemed to snap back to reality, "Is he alright?"
Mark looked at her disdainfully, "If Miles Monroe were seriously hurt, would Zoe Monroe have time to come here to act pitiful?"
Zoe responded confidently, "He’s hurt! His head is cut, arm fractured, leg needs metal pins; he’s basically just left with a mouth to breathe!"
Mark caught her again, Zoe flailed her arms, Mark easily pinned her down with his height advantage, she couldn’t reach him, furious she aimed a kick at his lower body.
Mark dodged swiftly, fearing for his safety, "Zoe Monroe, can you even call yourself a woman?"
"If you’re a man, then stop dodging!"
Mark hoisted her up and tossed her out of The Yves Family.
For the New Year’s Eve dinner, Hannah Hayes made many of her specialty dishes, it was pretty sumptuous, she kept piling food into Vera’s bowl, "You know, it’s been years since you spent New Year here."
Vera hadn’t had much appetite these past days but ate more than usual.
After dinner, Hannah and Harry sat in the living room watching the Spring Festival Gala, Mark had gone off with his rowdy friends, Vera used an excuse of going for a walk to help digestion and headed out.
Walking around The Yves Villa for a while, Vera eventually drove to the hospital’s inpatient building.
Vera sat in her car, telling herself, she’d just take a look, confirming he was okay.
Just as she opened the door, her phone rang, seeing the caller ID, it was from the villa’s landline.
Vera hesitated and answered, "Winston Valentine..."
She heard heavy breathing from the other end but waited long without hearing him speak.
