Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 174: Wait for Me There
Vera Yves was momentarily stunned and turned her head away.
Miles Monroe withdrew his hand and gave a faint smile, "I thought it was another dream."
"Does it still hurt?"
"A little," Miles’ voice was somewhat weak, "about last night, I’m sorry. I drank too much and thought I was dreaming."
"I know." Vera looked at him, "Please don’t drink so much again in the future, alright?"
Miles looked at her as well, "These days, I’ve been thinking if it had been me who arrived first to save you that day, would everything have been different, if I hadn’t left on our wedding day, if..."
"There aren’t that many ifs." Vera interrupted him, "Your kindness wouldn’t let you just sit by and do nothing for her. Even if we did it all over again, it would still be the same result."
Miles smiled wryly, "Yeah, Vera, sometimes I really hate myself."
"Stop thinking about the past. Let’s both look forward, okay?" Vera advised him, "Your health is your own; don’t abuse yourself like this anymore. No matter what, I want you to be alright."
Miles looked at her with gentle eyes, as if they contained a thousand words, and finally said softly, "Mm, you should also take care."
Vera gave him a small smile, "If you’re tired, get some more sleep."
Miles closed his eyes wearily.
Vera sat on a nearby sofa, and as time passed, Zoe Monroe was still nowhere to be found.
Vera texted her, and Zoe replied: Coming back soon.
An hour passed with no sign of her still, and as it neared eleven-thirty, just as Vera was about to call her, a video call from Winston Valentine came through.
Vera instinctively rejected the call.
Winston quickly sent it again, leaving Vera no choice but to step outside the hospital room to accept it with voice.
"I’m downstairs at your place."
Vera remembered they had a date planned, "I’m not home. Tell me the place, and I’ll head straight there."
"Where are you?"
Vera tightened her grip on the phone.
"Why didn’t you answer my video call?"
Winston’s voice turned cold, "Wait for me there."
Before Vera could speak, Winston had already cut off the video call.
Of course, Vera didn’t dare wait for him in the hospital room. As soon as Zoe returned, Vera rushed out. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"Vera, I ordered delivery, don’t you want to eat before you go?"
Vera waved her hand and left without looking back.
Zoe sat by the bedside and said to Miles, "The doctor said you can only have liquid food now, eat in small amounts throughout the day. Do you really not want me to tell Uncle and Aunt about your hospitalization?"
Miles seemed to just come to his senses, and replied softly, "No need, just get me a male nurse please."
"Did you and Vera clear things up? She..."
"There’s no misunderstanding between us." Miles’ voice carried a hint of melancholy, "It’s me who didn’t understand anything and hurt her feelings. I thought we knew each other well enough, maybe I should have given this relationship more space."
He was too eager to extricate himself from the quagmire of his relationship with Jane Shea and too eager to give Vera a future, which backfired instead.
Vera practically ran to the hospital entrance, where Winston was standing by the roadside, leaning against his car, looking at her with a cold expression.
Vera gritted her teeth and walked to his side.
Winston looked down at her, "Such a short walk, and Dr. Yves is this worn out? How did you pass the 800-meter test in school?"
Vera, still catching her breath, glared at him, "Aren’t we going on a date? Let’s go."
"Miles Monroe and I were at least high school classmates." Winston stood up straight and moved closer to her, "We’ve come all the way here, it wouldn’t be right not to visit."
After speaking, Winston took her hand and strode inside.
Vera tugged at him, "Winston, I just happened to pass by."
"What a coincidence." Winston smiled at her, "I just happened to pass by too."
"I know I shouldn’t be seeing him." Vera tightened her grip on his hand, "Just this last time, okay?"
Winston firmly held her hand, "Vera, I’m not that generous. When you’re with me, your heart and your person should only belong to me, got it?"
Winston led her to the car and opened the passenger door for her.
Vera thought of the injury on his arm, "How about I drive instead?"
Winston glanced at her, "Do you really think I’m a cripple?"
Vera couldn’t be bothered to reply.
When they got to the restaurant, neither had much of an appetite. Winston offered to cut her steak.
"I’ll do it myself."
"Didn’t you say my right hand needs some exercise too?"
Vera looked at his still somewhat shaky right hand and let him have his way.
Just as they were eating, someone came over to greet them.
Vera glanced up; it was one of Winston’s business friends she had met a few times before over dinner.
Seeing Winston with Vera, the friend was visibly surprised but quickly called her Mrs. Valentine, in keeping with recent rumors in their circle.
Vera didn’t dare respond to being called Mrs. Valentine, as the circle lacked neither gossip nor people who loved to gossip.
"President Zane misunderstood, I’m currently helping President Valentine with his health as his personal doctor."
President Zane was taken aback and quickly corrected himself, "Oh, so Dr. Yves."
President Zane chuckled, "My wife has recently been saying she’s not feeling well, I wonder if there’s a time Dr. Yves could also have a look and help her out."
Vera smiled politely, "That will have to wait until I’m done taking care of President Valentine first."
"Then let’s set a date later."
As soon as President Zane left, Vera felt the temperature around her seemed to drop a few degrees.
Winston completely lost his appetite, "Why didn’t you say you were my hired caretaker?"
Vera frowned, "I am your personal doctor."
"Don’t forget, you’re also my girlfriend."
"I don’t want to become a topic of idle chatter, is that not okay?" Vera leaned back in her chair, calmly looking at him, "For a man like you, romantic rumors only add to your charms, but have you thought about what people might say about me?"
"Vera, I’m not playing games with you. We can remarry anytime."
"And make the same mistakes again?" Vera said weakly, "During that time, not just me, you weren’t happy either."
"We won’t repeat the same mistakes."
"Maybe."
But she wouldn’t easily try again.
After lunch, Winston held her hand and went to a nearby cinema.
Vera had little interest in watching a movie. While Winston went to buy tickets, she stood and watched the kids play on the claw machine.
"Do you want to play?" Winston appeared behind her at some point.
Vera shook her head, "I’ve never caught one before."
Winston handed her the items in his hands, "I’ll go get some tokens."
Vera glanced at him, "You sure about this?"
Winston raised an eyebrow, "You should know whether I’m capable or not by now."
Vera blushed and silently called him a rascal.
Winston returned with a bundle of tokens, inserted one into the machine, and skillfully maneuvered the joystick. Vera couldn’t help but hold her breath.
