Chapter 8: Chapter 8: I Won’t Allow You to Leave

Cecilia Vaughn stood in the center of the crowd, her face pale, her right wrist wrapped in a white bandage, and her whole person seemed fragile enough to be blown down by the wind at any moment.

Winston Valentine was standing just to her left. It turned out that Cecilia was also hospitalized here, meaning he should have been in the hospital all along, yet he hadn’t visited her even once.

The group also saw Vera Yves and all of them stopped.

Mrs. Valentine, Samantha Warren, saw Vera and her face darkened. She walked over in a few quick steps.

"Slap!" A resounding slap landed on Vera’s face.

Her cheek stung with sharp pain. Vera held her face, feeling a bit dazed. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Everyone was taken aback by Samantha Warren’s action.

"What more do you want? She’s been hiding abroad for three years already!" Samantha Warren said, eye red and teeth clenched, "She just returned to the country, and you insist on pushing her like this! Do you want to drive her to death before you’re satisfied?"

"What do you want, lady?" Mark Yves, holding a discharge sheet, saw Vera being slapped from afar and rushed over, pulling Vera behind him and pointing at Samantha Warren, "Don’t think I won’t hit a woman! Apologize to my sister!"

"Mom, this has nothing to do with Vera, please don’t be like this!" Cecilia Vaughn hurriedly approached, pulling on Samantha’s arm.

Vera couldn’t help but glance at Winston Valentine, his face devoid of expression, as if the person slapped was a stranger.

What was she expecting? He could ignore her while she was hospitalized, so why would he care about this slap?

Vera pushed Mark aside and calmly looked at Samantha Warren, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"Still playing dumb?" Samantha Warren glared at her angrily, "If it weren’t for you and your mom going to the company and causing a scene, saying all sorts of nonsense, how would Old Mrs. Valentine decide to arrange for Cecilia to get married?"

So that’s how it was.

Did he also think she did it deliberately?

"What does this have to do with my mom?" Mark retorted, "You have no idea what kind of daughter you raised? If it weren’t for those two flirting all the time, afraid others might not know..."

"Mark!" Vera’s face sank.

Mark snorted in anger, turning his head away.

Vera stared at Samantha Warren, "My mom did go to the company to find Winston Valentine, but I don’t know why this thing ended up in Grandmother’s ears."

"Dare to argue!" Samantha Warren raised her hand again.

Mark grabbed her wrist, "You’re doing it again? Am I dead?"

Samantha cried out in pain.

Cecilia Vaughn hurriedly grabbed Mark’s wrist, "Let go of my mom!"

"Get away!" Mark swung his hand, and Cecilia, already looking like she could tumble over, fell towards the ground.

Winston Valentine took a long stride, supporting her. Cecilia looked at him pitifully, "I’m fine."

Mark twitched his lips, come on, he didn’t even use any force!

Winston Valentine lifted her up, coldly looking at Mark, "Release her!"

"Let go of her so she can slap my sister again?" Mark glared at him, "Didn’t you see how hard she just slapped my sister?"

Vera’s pale cheek bore five clear fingerprints, showing Samantha Warren’s slap was delivered with full force.

"I told you to release her." Winston Valentine’s face was somber.

Though Mark was rough, he was still somewhat wary of his brother-in-law, unwillingly releasing his grip.

Vera spoke coldly, "If Aunt thinks this is an argument, we can ask Grandmother why she decided to arrange Cecilia’s marriage."

Samantha Warren rubbed her wrist, looking at her incredulously, "Well, Vera Yves, you think Grandma’s authority will intimidate me?"

"And you think this slap of yours is justified just because you’re an elder?" Vera released her grip, looking at Cecilia and the diamond necklace around her neck glinting, "I can endure this slap, but I won’t tolerate being slandered."

Vera turned and left, Mark followed suit.

Cecilia watched her back, gritting her teeth in frustration.

Winston Valentine turned to the driver beside him, "Take Madam and Miss Vaughn back to the mansion."

Cecilia’s silhouette wobbled, and Samantha quickly steadied her, "Cecilia, what’s wrong?"

Cecilia’s face was pale, looking as if she might collapse at any moment, "I’m fine."

Winston’s stride paused, eventually supporting her. Cecilia clutched his arm, looking up with misty eyes, her voice tinged with stubbornness, "Winston Valentine, I won’t let you leave!"

At the hospital entrance, Mark peered inside again, "Winston Valentine is something else, having you take a cab while hospitalized was one thing, but now that you’re discharged, he’s actually sticking to that woman!"

Vera reached out her hand, "Car keys, please."

"What for?"

"I’m driving myself back."

Mark handed the car keys to her, "What’s wrong that you need to drive yourself back?"

"You’re annoying." Vera grabbed the keys, briskly walking away.

Annoying? Mark clicked his tongue, truly no good deed goes unpunished!

After booking a ride, Mark squatted by the flowerbed, smoking a cigarette. Before he even finished, he saw Winston Valentine supporting Cecilia Vaughn out of the hospital lobby, then carefully helping her into the car.

Ignoring his sick wife, but attentively serving another woman, such behavior was truly maddening!

With Winston’s back turned, Mark couldn’t see his expression, only Cecilia’s eyes that seemed filled with endless sentiments.

Mark stubbed out the cigarette, indeed, a seductress! Look at her expertise, compared to Vera’s stubborn nature, it wouldn’t be long before Mrs. Valentine’s position changes hands, it seems he has to take action!

Back at the villa, Vera took a shower first. Hannah Hayes called, informing her that Theodore Xavier agreed not to reclaim The Yves Family’s shares for now, giving them a year to repay.

This was Winston Valentine’s way of giving a slap then a sweet date.

In the afternoon, there was a call from the old mansion, Old Mrs. Valentine invited her over for dinner, but Vera declined citing discomfort.

Unexpectedly, Old Mrs. Valentine personally brought her some dishes in the evening.

Seeing her, Old Mrs. Valentine immediately touched her face lovingly, "Vera, why did you lose so much weight in just a few days? Is Winston giving you grief?"

Vera shook her head, but her eyes turned slightly red.

"You’re just like your grandfather, keeping everything bottled up inside. If you don’t let things out, it’ll be detrimental over time." Old Mrs. Valentine looked at her with affection, "Didn’t you often tell Grandma that maintaining a good mood ensures health?"

Thinking of her grandfather, Vera hugged Old Mrs. Valentine tightly, "Grandma, I’m fine."

Noticing the red mark on her face, Old Mrs. Valentine’s face darkened, and she made a phone call, immediately summoning Winston Valentine back to the villa.

"Tell me, was it you who slapped Vera?"
