Chapter 151: Chapter 151: He Doesn’t Really Count as an Ex

Claire Hale: "Tell me whatever you want to say, there’s nothing to hide between us."

Joy Sharp said with difficulty: "I was just thinking, do we really need to put so much effort into this case? The things we’re investigating now, don’t seem to be closely related to our actual job."

Claire Hale was slightly taken aback.

Thinking she was unhappy, Joy Sharp quickly added: "President Hale, I don’t mean that I don’t want to do it, it’s just that I always feel Jared Jennings is quite dangerous. Last time at the restaurant, his stance was difficult to deal with. The more we know about someone like him, with such prominence and power, the harder our own lives might become."

Joy Sharp’s words were indeed quite reasonable.

Even if Claire herself was not afraid of trouble, it didn’t mean she could drag others along with her.

Moreover, the firm was currently on the rise. Although many relationships were stable, offending Jared Jennings might make it precarious again.

Claire Hale was silent for a while, then said: "I’ll get in touch with Renee Lynn again and talk to her about this."

However, it wasn’t even a few days later when Renee Lynn came to the firm on her own.

"As for my divorce with Jared Jennings, let’s just stop here. I’ll pay the expenses incurred during this time, but as for the lawsuit we discussed earlier, let’s drop it."

Upon hearing Renee Lynn’s words, Claire Hale did not feel relieved.

Instead, she asked uneasily, "Did something happen?"

"No."

Renee Lynn lowered her gaze, avoiding her probing eyes.

"Nothing happened. I’ve just come to terms with it; Jared Jennings is wealthy and powerful, and there’s no need to divorce him. Many things in life, if you endure them, will pass."

"What about Joyce?"

Claire Hale pressed further.

"Didn’t you say before that he had once..."

"I got it wrong."

Renee Lynn quickly interrupted, looking up with a smile at her lips, sincerely, "Claire, you’ve helped me a lot during this time and I appreciate it. But investigating Jared is just too difficult, I don’t want to trouble you anymore."

"I..."

Claire intended to say it wasn’t any trouble.

But the words of Joy Sharp from two days ago echoed in her mind.

Renee Lynn stepped forward, gently hugged her, and said: "The things I did to bully you when we were young, please don’t forgive me. What I’m facing now is probably retribution for the bad things I did in the past; it’s my fate."

After saying this, Renee Lynn smiled at her and left with her bag.

Claire Hale felt uneasy, but in the end, the relationship between her and Renee was nothing more than that of a client and a lawyer. With the client having given up, she naturally had no way to force reason out of this case.

After sending off Renee Lynn, Claire Hale received a call from The Lockwood Matriarch.

"Claire, would you come over to your grandparents’ for dinner tonight?"

"Yes, of course."

She agreed without a second thought.

The Lockwood Matriarch was quite surprised at how readily she agreed.

After all, several times before, Claire had gracefully declined for various reasons.

Claire Hale: "Grandma, even if you hadn’t called me, I was planning to visit you and Grandpa in the next few days."

The Lockwood Matriarch was overjoyed to hear this: "That’s wonderful, it’s been so long since the family had a meal together. Since you’re coming, I’ll make sure to have the kitchen prepare more of your favorite dishes."

Claire Hale thanked her warmly and chatted about the Lockwood Matriarch’s well-being before hanging up the phone.

After it quieted down, her nose tingled with a sour sensation.

Just hearing the voice of The Lockwood Matriarch over the phone, Claire could discern her grandmother’s health was not as it used to be.

Even though medical science has advanced, and leukemia is not considered incurable, for an elderly person, even if treated, it would cost much of their energy.

Claire Hale headed to The Elder Lockwood’s residence immediately after getting off work in the evening.

She had just parked and was getting out of her car when she coincidentally ran into Sean Lockwood.

"President Lockwood."

Claire Hale greeted Sean Lockwood politely.

Sean Lockwood glanced at her, maybe intentionally, and suddenly said: "At the Lockwood Family, don’t you think you should address me differently?"

Claire Hale was momentarily stunned, then realized he wanted her to call him uncle.

Of course, she wouldn’t.

Claire just looked at Sean Lockwood speechlessly, before stepping into the house.

The Lockwood Matriarch was coming down the stairs, and upon seeing Claire enter, greeted her warmly and asked about her well-being.

Claire saw she had lost considerable weight, especially around the eyes, which looked noticeably more frail. Feeling a pang of concern, she asked: "Grandma, have you been feeling better?"

The Lockwood Matriarch had kept her leukemia a secret to avoid worrying her, and Claire refrained from bringing it up.

The Lockwood Matriarch smiled, saying: "Don’t worry, with Tristan taking care of me, I’ve been recovering quite well."

At this point, Sean Lockwood also entered the room.

However, between him and The Lockwood Matriarch, there wasn’t much of an emotional connection, and any greetings exchanged were brief without further conversation.

After a few words, Sean Lockwood went upstairs to the study to find Byron Lockwood.

Claire remained with The Lockwood Matriarch for a while, and as dusk approached, she inquired: "Grandma, are you hungry yet? Should I ask the kitchen to serve dinner?"

"Let’s wait for Tristan," The Lockwood Matriarch replied, "He said Luna might be working late, and he wants to wait for her."

Claire Hale nodded calmly and said, "Alright."

"Auntie Heather."

Unbeknownst to her, Sean Lockwood had exited the study and walked up to them, saying: "Dad asked me to call you; it’s time for your medication."

Claire hurriedly said: "I’ll accompany Grandma."

The Lockwood Matriarch, determined not to let her know about her illness, quickly assured her: "I can handle it myself. That old man probably has other things he wants to discuss with me."

Claire did not follow.

Seeing The Lockwood Matriarch head upstairs, Sean Lockwood walked over and sat beside Claire.

"The old man just told me that Tristan will be bringing the Adler Family’s young lady over."

He mentioned unexpectedly.

Claire Hale responded flatly: "I just heard Grandma mention it."

Sean Lockwood didn’t reply immediately but continued to observe her for a moment.

Feeling uneasy under his gaze, Claire turned her head away and said: "If President Lockwood enjoys staring at me so much, I’m going to start charging you."

"Charging again?" Sean Lockwood laughed, "Why do you always think about money like a little miser?"

Claire retorted: "If not money, then what? It’s not like I’d be thinking about men."

Sean Lockwood raised an eyebrow: "Seems like you’re completely over Tristan. Hearing he’s bringing another woman home doesn’t even faze you."

"The proper way to treat every ex is to consider them as dead."

Claire added, "Though technically, he doesn’t qualify as an ex."
