Too Late to Love Her: When She Divorced, He Fell Apart-Chapter 64: I Hardly Remember My Childhood
Claire wanted to run, but her legs felt welded to the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably.
In her mind, the image of Evan Hale lying in a pool of blood suddenly emerged and wouldn’t go away.
"Claire, watch out!"
A slender figure darted out from the side, knocking her to the ground.
"Are you okay?"
Hearing the concern, she looked up and froze.
Jade Sutton was holding her arm, looking at her with full eyes of worry.
Instinctively, she shook off her hand and distanced herself, coolly expressing thanks.
Jade’s eyes filled with a sad sense of loss.
The black sedan that had rushed towards them had stopped just millimeters from where Claire had been standing moments ago.
The car door opened, and a pair of black high heels hit the ground.
"You must be Claire Hale."
The woman walked up to Claire, her eyes filled with undisguised disgust.
Claire frowned, "And you are?"
The woman didn’t answer but instead slapped her directly.
——Slap!
Claire didn’t feel any pain.
Looking up, Jade completely blocked her.
As if protecting her.
She stepped forward, glanced sideways, and saw a flushed mark on Jade’s fair face.
Her pretty almond eyes stared fiercely at the woman in front of her.
Claire’s eyes darkened.
Then she coldly looked at the woman, "You tried to hit me with your car just now, and then suddenly struck out, I can sue you for assault at any time."
The woman laughed coldly, "Is this the way you seduced Dean Dawson?"
"Dean Dawson?" Claire was taken aback, "You are his..."
"I’m his wife."
"..."
Claire really hadn’t expected that Dean Dawson was married.
Thinking about it, no wonder he had that subtle expression when he heard she was married.
Probably thought he found someone just like him.
Claire’s face turned cold, "Then please manage your husband, stop letting him pretend to be a single elite outside, lest he gets thrown back in prison."
She had heard that the last time Dean was caught, he managed to get out on bail within a week.
However, he hadn’t looked for her since. As time went on, Claire forgot about him.
To think that his wife would act so brazenly outside her office.
The woman scrutinized her from head to toe, raising her brow with a mocking smile, "You’ve seduced my husband, got him locked up, and now dare to slander him. Let me tell you, this is not over between us!"
Jade stepped forward to block her, preventing her from advancing on Claire, angrily retorting, "Don’t slander my friend!"
The woman glanced at Jade, curling her lip in sarcasm, then said to Claire, "Your friend is quite loyal, but birds of a feather flock together, I guess she’s just like you, enjoys being a homewrecker!"
After speaking, the woman returned to her car in high heels.
Claire stood there, her attention completely off the woman.
She only watched Jade’s slender back shielding her, silent.
As a child, Jade had also protected her like this when others bullied her, shouting at those bullies, "Don’t bully my friend!"
Now, she was blocking in front of her again.
But things have changed, both she and Jade were no longer who they once were.
Jade turned around, her expression flustered upon seeing Claire’s face, wanting to touch her but fearing she’d despise her.
Her hand hovered awkwardly in mid-air, "Claire, are you... alright?"
Claire was momentarily stunned, then came back to her senses and wiped her face.
Only then did she realize that her face was wet.
"I’m fine."
She turned away, catching a glimpse of Jade’s wrist, which bore deep and shallow scars.
She abruptly grabbed her hand.
"Have you been attempting suicide often?"
Jade hurriedly withdrew her hand and forced a smile, "I used to, but since returning to the country, Tristan Lockwood has been arranging for me to see a therapist, so it’s much better now."
Claire gave an indifferent nod, her gaze sweeping over Jade’s swollen face.
As she turned, she said flatly, "You need to deal with the swelling on your face, come with me."
Jade paused, looking at her straight back, the corners of her mouth curved.
The elevator reached the office floor.
As Claire passed the cubicles, she asked Joy Sharp to bring the company’s spare medical kit to her office.
Joy was quick to act. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Seeing Jade’s swollen face, Joy sent Claire a message after leaving the office:
President Hale, did the mistress get hit by the wife?
Inside the office.
Claire glanced at Joy’s message, twitched her lips but ignored it.
Jade obediently sat beside her, waiting without moving as Claire applied medicine to reduce swelling.
While Claire switched cotton swabs, Jade cautiously looked into her eyes, saying, "Claire, I’m so happy you still care about me."
Claire paused, picked up a fresh cotton swab, and said, "That woman was trying to hit me, and you blocked it for me. I’m just fulfilling a duty by disinfecting you."
After speaking, she raised her eyes.
Only to meet Jade’s smiling pupils.
Jade held her other hand, smiling, "But I’m still happy, just like when we used to hold each other for warmth to avoid those bullies as kids."
Claire discreetly withdrew her hand.
"I don’t remember much from back then."
Jade looked at her sadly.
After Claire finished reducing the swelling, she asked, "Why did you come to my office?"
"Tristan told me you wanted to talk. I thought you’d be busy, so I came directly."
She cast her eyes down, looking into Jade’s eyes.
The other party watched her intently, not appearing to lie.
Claire: "Aren’t you afraid Sean Lockwood will find out you’re with Tristan?"
Mentioning Sean made Jade’s face turn pale, "I really have no choice, Claire. Besides Tristan, I don’t know who else can protect me."
The truth was, even after Sean knew that Tristan was hiding Jade, he made no significant move.
He simply hung the sword of threat over Claire’s head.
"So no matter what, you must stay by Tristan’s side now?"
Jade bit her lip, eyes downcast, "Claire, when I first found Tristan, I didn’t know you were married to him. I later asked him to know if you were doing well, and he said your marriage was only in name. He said you weren’t happy."
"After I was taken to the Lockwood Family, for so many years, you didn’t care at all. Why are you suddenly concerned now?"
Claire’s voice was very cold.
Like ice.
Jade’s body trembled, her eyes welling up with mist.
"Not long after you went to the Lockwood Family, my family had issues, my dad was taken in, and my mom and I could only escape abroad, cutting ties with all friends and relatives at home."
Claire looked at her, her eyes wavering slightly.
Jade sneered at herself, lips curling, "Do you think, in this state, I’m still lying to you?"
Her scar-laden wrists vaguely exposed.
