Chapter 69: Chapter 69: The Water Is Quite Sweet

Renee: "Jared."

Claire’s heart sank.

The eldest son of the Jennings Family, Jenson’s older brother, Jared Jennings.

The Jennings Family wields considerable influence in both business and politics in Riverbend.

And in the legal profession, the last thing anyone wants is to offend a big shot in politics. Once you do, it’s a dead end; you can forget about surviving in this field.

Naturally, no one is willing to take on this case.

Claire thought for a moment and asked, "Jared doesn’t agree to the divorce?"

"If I propose a divorce, he would definitely agree. But I can’t let my child stay with him."

Mentioning the child, Renee’s eyes filled with tears. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"He’s a beast; I can’t let my child live with someone like that. My daughter is only five; he would turn her into a monster."

Claire pressed her lips tightly, pondering whether to take on this case.

Suddenly, Renee knelt in front of her.

"Claire, I was wrong for what happened when we were kids, and I apologize. But please, I’m really out of options. I’m willing to give up everything, I just want my daughter. Jared is a psychopath; I saw with my own eyes how he treats my daughter..."

Renee was nearly shattered and couldn’t finish her sentence, already choking with sobs.

But Claire already understood the unsaid words.

In their line of work, they have come across many people, with beasts being more common.

Many who appear decent on the outside are thoroughly rotten inside.

Such disgraceful actions are common in the upper circles. Many don’t see it as shameful but rather see it as a source of pride, seeking thrills.

"I’ll take this case."

Claire said calmly.

Renee looked up in shock, crying and expressing her gratitude.

"I truly regret what I did to you in the past," Renee said while crying. "I even looked for Cynthia for help, but she not only refused, she also added insult to injury, saying I deserved it for rushing to marry into a wealthy family. I’ve even considered dying with my daughter. I didn’t expect any hope in coming to you. I’m grateful for your help and will be for life."

Claire didn’t show much expression.

But hearing Renee mention dying with her daughter, her face turned pale for a moment.

"Your daughter is innocent; I’ll take this case for her."

With that, she helped Renee up from the ground, letting her sit on a nearby chair, and called Joy in to record the details.

Renee had actually already collected a lot of evidence of Jared’s abuse.

Recordings, videos, injury reports, she kept them all carefully.

However, with the Jennings family’s considerable influence in Riverbend, Renee didn’t dare to easily hand them over. These were her aces; if Jared found out, it could end terribly for her.

Claire: "If you trust me with this evidence, make a copy for me. As for how to deal with Jared’s side, I’ll figure something out."

Renee didn’t say a word and handed all the materials to her.

Before leaving, Renee looked at her steadily and said: "Claire, whether successful or not, I will always remember your help. I’d give my life for you if needed."

Renee’s determined gaze reminded Claire of a phrase.

A mother’s strength.

Her eyes glimmered as she said softly, "What’s the use of me having your life? Keep it, for your daughter."

Renee gave a small smile, "Thank you."

Taking on the case was one thing; knowing how to proceed was another, and Claire found herself rather troubled.

In the past, when encountering complex cases, she would occasionally seek help from Jenson. This time, however, going to Jenson was out of the question.

Though she and Jenson have some rapport, Jared’s case could likely land someone in prison.

Jenson would never send his family in.

As she was fretting, Clarence suddenly called.

"Miss Hale, Tristan Lockwood’s wound got infected, his condition worsened, and his fever won’t subside. You should come quickly and take a look!"

Claire was stunned. Before she realized it, she was already on the way to Central Hospital.

She gripped the steering wheel, her palms sweating continuously.

Her heart nearly leaped out.

However, when she reached the ward, she found Tristan Lockwood sitting leisurely on the hospital bed, looking as if nothing happened.

She suppressed the pounding of her heart as she walked over, asking, "Didn’t Clarence say you were practically dead?"

Tristan glanced at the time, "Twenty minutes."

"What?"

"From your office to the hospital, it generally takes forty minutes at normal speed; you made it in half that time."

Tristan gazed deeply at her, the corners of his mouth barely lifting into a subtle smile.

"I wanted to come quickly to see if you were dead." Claire said expressionlessly, "Tristan Lockwood, you’re not a child anymore. Is tricking me like this amusing to you?"

"I’m lonely and unattended in the hospital; as my wife, shouldn’t you come?"

"Why call me when you have no one to care for you? Go find Jade Sutton." Claire glanced at his back, "You took that wound for her, and she’s ignoring you; isn’t that unreasonable?"

Tristan said calmly, "She doesn’t know."

Claire understood.

So he didn’t want Jade to worry about him.

She turned to leave, but Tristan’s phone rang.

He answered it, saying, "Jenson, what’s up?"

Claire paused her steps, standing still.

Noticing her pause, Tristan gave her a deep look.

Jenson said something unsettling on the other end of the line, and Tristan responded, "If I recover well, I’ll attend."

He hung up after saying that.

Claire silently handed him a cup of water, asking, "What event is Jenson inviting you to?"

Tristan raised an eyebrow, "Weren’t you just leaving?"

"You misunderstood." Claire kept her composure, offering a faint smile, "I planned to stay and take care of you."

Tristan glanced at the cup in her hand.

Claire got the hint and brought it to him, personally feeding him the water.

However, as she placed the empty cup on the table, Tristan grabbed her wrist.

She fell against him.

Mindful of his unhealed back wound, Claire tried not to press down on him, intending to get up, but he kissed her.

After the kiss, Tristan commented with interest, "The water is quite sweet."

Claire reminded him, "You haven’t answered my previous question."

"Why are you concerned about Jenson?"

He still didn’t directly answer her.

Claire: "It’s not that I’m concerned about him; I just wanted to know where you’re going. You’re so injured; I’m a bit worried with you out there alone."

Tristan’s gaze at her turned slightly subtle.

And truthfully, Claire felt quite awkward after saying that.

It was truly insincere.

Tristan probably didn’t want to engage with her either.

"His father’s birthday dinner, inviting the Lockwood Family."

Tristan suddenly said.

Claire blurted out, "Are you bringing someone with you?"

He gave her a meaningful look, "Aren’t you eager to divorce me?"

"We aren’t divorced yet."

She smiled at him.
