Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Am I Really That Worthless in Your Eyes?

"You’re being too kind, Uncle." Claire said, "I have nothing to do with Jade Sutton, so where does this talk of being heartless to one’s kin come from? You should trouble Uncle to pass a message to her, that thanks to her caring so much about me, I had such a miserable childhood."

As soon as she finished speaking, Tristan Lockwood suddenly frowned and hung up the phone.

He asked her, "What did you mean by what you said to Sean Lockwood just now?"

"Nothing much."

Claire really didn’t want to say much to Tristan Lockwood.

"In your eyes, Jade Sutton is always the warm little sun that brings you joy. Only I play those malicious mind games. Whatever happened to me as a child, I deserved it. So why bother asking?"

Tristan Lockwood pinched her wrist, still unwilling to let go, "You mean you’d rather tell the truth to Sean than to me."

"That’s right."

She said calmly.

Tristan Lockwood seriously stared at Claire Hale for a long time.

Seeing her still with that stubborn, unyielding attitude, he suddenly released her wrist and threw a stack of papers on the bar in front of her.

"Sign it."

Claire lowered her head, the words "divorce agreement" pierced her eyes.

She stood in place, her fingers uncontrollably trembling slightly, not moving, but looked at him and said, "Just because I chased Jade Sutton away from your side, you agreed to divorce right away. Is she really that important to you?"

"More important than you." He said coldly, "We’ve known each other for so many years, have you ever had an ounce of affection for me beyond using me? Besides wanting money, Claire Hale, ask yourself, have you ever thought of me? Even a dog would wag its tail, how are you different from an ungrateful wolf?"

Claire lowered her eyes, her vision somewhat blurred.

She asked softly, "Am I really so worthless in your heart?"

"You should ask yourself that." He stared at the top of her head mockingly, his expression cold, "Is there anything about you worth cherishing?"

The chill in the air seeped into the skin, penetrating the bones.

Claire felt an unprecedented cold.

She gazed at the floor’s texture blankly, her mind empty, but every nerve in her body ached subtly.

When she looked up again, her eyes were icy.

"You’re right, I am just a worthless person."

Claire picked up the divorce agreement, flipped through it briefly, her gaze fixed on the last page where Tristan Lockwood’s signature was.

She said, "So I won’t sign it. If I divorce you now, Jade Sutton will have a chance to come back to you. I absolutely won’t let her have it easy."

Tristan Lockwood paused, looking up at her.

In his pitch-black eyes, no emotion showed, except for a barely noticeable turmoil at the bottom.

The reason he signed the agreement was mostly because of anger.

Angry at her for acting recklessly, even bringing Sean Lockwood without discussing with him first, to take Jade Sutton away.

Especially using the Lockwood Family’s reputation as a threat.

Completely selfish to the extreme.

He couldn’t help but recall when they got married, he solemnly asked her if she had any feelings for him, she heartlessly and coldly said, no.

The way she indifferently watched Jade Sutton leave was just like how she was two years ago.

Cold, heartless, selfish.

Completely different from the Claire Hale who drunkenly hugged him at eighteen, saying she liked him.

"Two years ago, when you married me, you said it was for money and the Lockwood Family."

Tristan Lockwood looked at her, speaking word by word.

"Think about what kind of marriage life we’ve had these past two years between us. Do you find it meaningful?"

His eyes were deep, like an unfathomable vortex.

Claire felt a sudden panic, turning her head to avoid his gaze.

Tristan Lockwood continued, "You’re unhappy, I give you freedom, I propose divorce, but you disagree. Then soon after, you met Dean Dawson, tasted what another man is like, and wanted to divorce me. When I didn’t comply, you started going against me in every way. Why don’t you ever consider others’ feelings in what you do?"

Claire: "My proposal for divorce has nothing to do with Dean Dawson."

Tristan Lockwood merely sneered, "What about Dylan Skinner then? Isn’t cuddling with a fresh-faced young man much more comfortable than an old man?"

He pulled out a photo on his phone with a sarcastic laugh.

"Spending money on him, buying clothes, paying for his mother’s medical bills, and hugging him at the hospital entrance. Taking the money I give you to date other men and go shopping, yet you still want me to part peacefully with you. Claire Hale, how can you be so selfish, every time you reach out for money from me, every time you demand from me, do you truly feel justified and think I should just be your fool?"

Claire said, "The money I spent on Dylan Skinner was earned from my office."

He scoffed, "And the money for that office, wasn’t it given by me?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"So what?" Claire raised her eyes to look at him, "You say I’m unscrupulous, heartless, I admit it all. Without your money, I truly wouldn’t have what I have now, I’ve never denied any of this."

"But Tristan Lockwood, you can’t, and don’t have the right to deny the effort and sweat I’ve put in to get to where I am."

"That bit of effort, compared to reality, what’s the use? No matter how hard you try, can you escape your despised illegitimate identity? Without me, if you went out on your own, what could you do?"

Tristan Lockwood’s voice grew deeper, his words more forceful.

Almost making her unable to breathe.

He suddenly sneered, extremely disdainfully said, "Just think about what kind of men you’ve been hanging out with. One is a married cheater, another is a penniless poor kid, your little skills are only good at seducing these kinds of men."

The divorce agreement was clenched tightly in Claire’s hand.

The fragile paper crumpled into a ball, with a bit of force it would tear.

She bit her lip firmly, tasting blood, yet her lips curved defiantly, saying, "My worth isn’t defined by the type of man I find. Even if I’ve really had something with them, that only depends on whether I want to. Just like I only want your money, even having been with you so many times, has never stirred a bit of feeling."

With every word she spoke, Tristan Lockwood’s face turned uglier.

By the time she finished speaking, Tristan Lockwood had lost all patience.

There was also an obvious irritation on his face.

He glanced at the divorce agreement in her hand.

Even though those five words made him feel stifled, he still said, "Anyway, I’ve given you the agreement, think it over. If you truly want us to continue this slow torment, you can try, let’s see who outplays whom."
