Too Late to Love Her: When She Divorced, He Fell Apart-Chapter 95: The Ones You Can’t Have Are the Hardest to Forget
"Getting ready to drive back," she said.
Tristan Lockwood: "Not eating on time, not resting early, are you really ignoring my words? Hmm?"
Though it was a question, compared to the cold tone of the past, Tristan’s voice today was particularly gentle, as if he truly cared about her.
Claire Hale unexpectedly did not retort but said, "There are a few cases that are quite tricky, really bothersome."
"You can tell me about them." Tristan calmly said, "I might not be able to give you a good solution, but I can be a listener."
Claire Hale had just reached her car, she opened the door, sat in the driver’s seat, did not start the car immediately, and slowly began talking about one of the cases.
On the other end, Tristan was very quiet, not interrupting her the entire time, but through the phone, Claire seemed to hear his steady breathing.
Her heart was beating a little fast.
Their more than two years of marriage, being like an ordinary couple, chatting with her husband while he’s on a business trip over the phone, in the past, she couldn’t even imagine it.
Claire herself wouldn’t do this sort of thing, Tristan even less so.
They both held their heads high, unwilling to speak a soft word to each other.
Yet today, when separation was inevitable, they both unwittingly put away their sharp edges.
Probably because they knew too well that losing was unavoidable, so in the end, they finally put down a bit of the pride they once would never relinquish.
"You’ll do great." Tristan said this when Claire finished, "Your earnestness, dedication, and perseverance have brought you to where you are today, and they will follow you into the future."
Her eyes felt a bit warm, but not to the point of tears, though her voice was a bit hoarse when she spoke again: "This is the first time you’ve encouraged me since I started working."
The other side was quiet for a long time.
Claire didn’t know what Tristan was thinking.
But just listening to his gentle breathing, she unexpectedly felt a sense of confidence she never had before.
But this newfound confidence came too late and wouldn’t last long.
"Claire."
Tristan suddenly spoke, letting her nickname roll off his tongue.
"Today..."
"Dr. Lockwood, I’ve been looking for you all over, turns out you’re hiding here all alone." Zoey Adler said as she opened the door, seeing Tristan leaning against the windowsill, his distinct features slightly tilted up, seemingly looking at the moon.
Tonight’s moonlight was beautiful, bright and clear, with the breeze lightly blowing.
His left hand hanging by his side held a cigarette, the embers burning to his fingers, yet he didn’t react.
Only his expression carried a soft, distracting tenderness.
Tristan wore a Bluetooth headset, and Zoey didn’t realize he was on the phone, walking over coquettishly saying, "What a coincidence, I just heard from my mom that Grandma and Grandpa Lockwood are thinking of matchmaking us."
The moment those words left her mouth, Claire on the other end, hung up without saying anything.
Tristan’s face sank almost instantly, coldly and distantly pushing Zoey away, "I haven’t heard of this news."
"Well, maybe the elders haven’t had a chance to tell you," Zoey didn’t mind his coldness, smiling ambiguously, "It’s going to happen sooner or later, why don’t we get acquainted ahead of time?"
Her slender white finger slowly brushed his waist, the intention to "get acquainted" was obvious.
Tristan unemotionally pushed away her hand, "My marriage, the old man and old lady have a say but not a deciding voice, even if they favor you, you’re just one among many candidates, doing this now diminishes your worth."
Zoey’s smile froze for a second, then quickly lifted her lips confidently, "I have confidence I can win you over."
She wasn’t inexperienced with men, even difficult ones she could win over.
The more challenging someone like him was, the more it fueled her urge to conquer.
Tristan emotionlessly said, "And I have confidence that I won’t have feelings for you."
After he said that, he returned to the KTV room, picked up the suit jacket thrown beside the sofa, and without hesitation, left directly.
Unwilling to give up, Zoey followed him in her clicking high heels: "Dr. Lockwood, such words shouldn’t be said too early, a man never definitively denies the possibility of having feelings for any woman at the very beginning, unless he already has someone in his heart, could you be like that?"
She leaned closer to him, smiled lightly: "Is it that pitiful Miss Song, or Miss Hale who completely ignored you at the hospital last time? I think it’s probably the latter, the one you can’t get is always the hardest to forget."
As soon as she finished, Tristan cast her an exceptionally cold gaze.
Zoey felt a shiver, stood still not following him.
Her intuition is always spot on, a man only gets angry when his secret is exposed.
A look like Tristan’s certainly meant she had mentioned something that revealed his mind.
...
Claire Hale returned home, and after showering and lying in bed, she glanced at her phone again.
There was a missed call from Tristan.
She didn’t call back.
She recognized the woman’s voice, someone who had approached Tristan for a meal at the hospital, a very beautiful doctor.
She didn’t actually think Tristan would truly have something with a woman.
But, that woman’s words brought her back to reality.
She realized she would soon lose Tristan, and another woman would soon have him.
Moreover, rightfully, openly declaring to the world her ownership of him.
Claire had always known that she was not inherently kind or gentle, even just thinking about the possibility of such a situation, the jealousy and unwillingness she hid in her heart began to grow wildly.
She looked at the phone again, Tristan hadn’t called again.
Claire was clearly aware that her feelings were conflicted.
Not hoping he’d call again, to avoid more trouble and heartache.
But also hoping he’d call, to gain a bit of psychological comfort, showing herself that in the end, he cared at least a little about her.
However, Tristan only called once, which meant even if he had some feelings for her, they were just mild.
When a man truly loves a woman, there will be moments of romantic obsession, if he can’t reach her once, he’d end up contacting her repeatedly, but Tristan didn’t.
He was self-controlled, and indifferent enough.
At least, to him, Claire’s status was far from being accepted wholeheartedly.
...
Zoey discovered that during this academic exchange, Tristan was checking his phone noticeably more than usual.
Sometimes, just looking at the phone, that cold face of his would show a bit of a warming smile.
She wasn’t exaggerating.
Tristan was someone who did everything with a cool, detached demeanor, like an emotionless machine, nobody had seen him smile so genuinely before.
