Chapter 64: Chapter 63: Close Danger

Amber’s Pov.

The air in the Awakened base was thick with tension, a palpable weight that pressed down on everyone inside.

People moved in hurried, frantic bursts, their faces pale and eyes wide with fear.

Some huddled together in small groups, whispering anxiously, while others paced back and forth, their hands clenched into fists or clutching weapons tightly.

The compound, usually a place of order and discipline, now felt like a storm about to break.

I moved through the chaos, my boots clicking softly against the stone floor as I navigated the crowded space.

The fear was contagious, but I couldn’t afford to let it take hold of me.

Not now.

Not when we were all waiting for the second announcement.

The first one had been enough to send everyone into a panic, and I could still hear it in my mind.

The Awakened Masters had gathered us earlier, their faces grim as they delivered the news.

The goblins and orcs were approaching the base, fast.

Their numbers were overwhelming, too many to count, and they were closing in with a speed that made my stomach churn.

The raiders had spotted them on the move, a massive force rolling toward us like a tidal wave.

Some of them were driving trucks, the engines roaring as they barreled across the land, while others moved on foot, their ranks stretching as far as the eye could see.

The orcs were the worst.

They looked powerful, their massive frames bristling with weapons and armor.

But what really unsettled everyone was the fact that the Orc Lord wasn’t among them.

At first, that had been a relief.

If the Orc Lord wasn’t leading the charge, maybe we stood a chance.

But the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me.

Why wasn’t he there?

What was he planning?

The goblins, on the other hand, were everywhere.

Their numbers were staggering, a sea of green skin and sharp teeth that seemed to stretch endlessly.

They didn’t look like they had a plan, but that almost made it worse.

They were coming at us with full strength, no strategy, no hesitation.

Just raw, chaotic force.

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I tried to steady my breathing.

The Masters had said the goblins and orcs weren’t far now.

They could be here any minute.

And when they arrived, i had to be ready for anything.

I glanced around the compound, taking in the faces of the other Awakened.

Some were trying to calm the panicking members, their voices firm but reassuring.

Others were checking their weapons, their movements sharp and focused.

But the fear was still there, lurking beneath the surface.

It was in the way their hands trembled, the way their eyes darted toward the gates every few seconds.

I couldn’t blame them.

I was quite afraid too.

But I couldn’t let it show.

Not when everyone was looking to us, the stronger Awakened, for guidance.

As I made my way through the crowd, I caught snippets of conversations, fragments of fear and uncertainty.

"What if we can’t stop them?" someone whispered, their voice trembling.

"We won’t know if we don’t try, either way, we don’t have a choice," another replied, though their tone lacked conviction.

I wanted to say something, to reassure them, but the words caught in my throat.

How could I promise them we’d be okay when I wasn’t even sure myself?

But despite everything, the fear lingered within them, a shadow that refused to be dispelled.

I stopped near the edge of the compound, my eyes scanning the horizon.

The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the land.

Somewhere out there, the goblins and orcs were coming.

And when they arrived, we’d have to fight.

I took a deep breath, forcing myself to focus.

We didn’t have a choice.

We had to be strong.

For the base.

For each other.

For ourselves.

The second announcement would come soon, and with it, the final plan.

Until then, all we could do was wait, and hope we were ready for what was coming.

*Minutes Later*

The air was thick with tension, a palpable weight pressing down on everyone gathered in the square.

The usual hum of the city outside had been replaced by an uneasy silence, broken only by the occasional murmur of voices or the distant clatter.

I stood among the crowd, my heart slightly pounding in my chest, as a group of Awakened masters approached.

Their presence alone was enough to command attention, but it was their appearance that truly set them apart.

They wore the familiar Awakened cyber suits, but these were different, more advanced, more imposing.

The sleek, metallic fabric seemed to shimmer with an inner light, and the intricate designs etched into the armor hinted at a level of power far beyond what most of us could comprehend.

That is why they are masters rank, currently the highest any awakened has ever reached.

The lead master stepped forward, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.

"Listen carefully," he began, his tone firm but not unkind. "The situation outside the wall has escalated. We need all Awakened to prepare and move outside immediately. Form a wide circle around the perimeter. The wall is vast, and we’ll need every soldier and Awakened from every branch in the city to hold the line."

A ripple of unease spread through the crowd.

I could feel it, the fear, the uncertainty.

It was like a living thing, crawling up my spine and settling in the pit of my stomach.

The thought of leaving the safety of the wall, of facing whatever was out there, was enough to make even the bravest among us hesitate.

I glanced around, catching the wide eyes and clenched fists of those nearby.

Some shifted uncomfortably, their hands twitching toward their weapons as if seeking reassurance.

Others stood frozen, their faces pale, their breaths shallow.

The master continued, his voice steady despite the growing tension.

"For now, our primary objective is to eliminate any goblins that breach the perimeter. The Awakened mages are preparing a wide-range barrier to protect the city and its civilians. This is our first priority. This is our duty."

The words hung in the air, heavy and unyielding.

Duty.

It was a word we all knew well, but hearing it now, in this context, felt different.

It wasn’t just a call to action, it was a reminder of what was at stake.

The city, the people, the lives we’d built within these walls.

All of it depended on us.

Awakeneds, and Soldiers.

I clenched my fists, trying to steady my breathing.

The fear was still there, gnawing at the edges of my mind, but I pushed it away, reminding myself that...

I wasn’t just an Awakened, I was a protector.

Someone meant to use their ability to protect what is important.

Humanity.

And if that meant stepping outside the wall, facing the unknown, then so be it.

Around me, the crowd began to stir.

Some moved with purpose, their faces set in grim determination as they headed outside of the compound gates, probably going to prepare and head out of the wall.

Others lingered, their steps hesitant, their eyes darting toward the wall as if searching for a way out.

I could see the conflict in their expressions, the battle between fear and duty playing out in real time.

One of the masters paused nearby, his gaze sweeping over the crowd.

"Remember," he said, his voice low but carrying, "we are the shield. We are the barrier. If we falter, the city falls. Stay strong, stay focused, and trust in your abilites. And also remember, you are not alone in this."

Right.

I wasn’t alone in this.

None of us were.

We were a team, a unit, bound together by a common purpose and duty.

I must make it out alive.

And as I took my first step toward the gate, it loomed ahead, massive and imposing, their heavy metal frames a stark reminder of the world beyond.
