Chapter 110: Don’t Let It Take Me
Steve’s heart pounded in his chest as Fiona’s eyes widened in fear, flickering from side to side as she scanned the shadows.
The forest air was thick with the low, guttural bellows echoing from every direction. They were certain of it now—surrounded. Her gaze snapped back to Steve, searching his face for guidance, for reassurance.
Even Steve, composed as he usually was, couldn’t mask the tension in his features. His eyes, sharp and alert, shifted from left to right, trying to pierce through the darkness.
The bellows grew louder, more numerous. He bit down on his bottom lip, thoughts racing.
’How many goblins could have gotten this deep into the woods by nightfall?’ he thought, jaw tightening.
’Damn it. There might be too many for me to control all at once. This could be bad. Real bad.’
But even then, he reminded himself—
’I still have the trump card. The ghost. If it comes down to it... I can still summon it and command it to slay all the goblins.’ He exhaled, calming himself slightly.
’But for now... I need to be certain. We need to make it out of this alive—without using them.’
Snap.
The sharp crack of a twig pierced the silence like a dagger. Both Steve and Fiona stiffened instantly, their ears attuned to the subtle disturbance. The sound had come from somewhere close—far too close.
Steve muttered under his breath.
"Damn it, I don’t have my weapon."
No sword, nor dagger. Just his breath, his instincts... and his rapidly escalating fear.
He knew what it meant. They had been found.
His body froze, every muscle pulled taut, his gaze flicking to the side to see what loomed in the darkness. He expected a goblin—big, deformed, and snarling. Or maybe something worse. But instead—
It was her.
The magic guard girl.
She was crouched behind a stony pillar, one eye closed in embarrassment or pain—perhaps both—after stepping on that cursed twig. But she wasn’t empty-handed. No, she held Fiona’s sword and Steve’s dagger in hand, as well as her own weapon wrapped around her sheath.
Relief washed over Steve’s face the moment he spotted her, like a wave splashing against a cliff.
’Thank heavens...she got us our weapons...she must have been alerted by the bellows or something and can to alert us...’
She lifted one hand slowly and motioned to him, her eyes serious as they darted toward something else in the woods.
The goblin.
It hadn’t seen them yet. But it had heard something.
The brute, massive and muscled, let out a deep, rumbling exhale through its nostrils.
Hmph.
It rose from its crouch, gripping its jagged weapon. Then, methodically, it began to cross the stream and walk directly into their part of the woods.
Its heavy steps crushed leaves and twigs beneath it as it walked.
And walked.
And walked...
Every step louder than the last. The forest seemed to fall completely silent in the face of its approach.
The goblin’s eyes, golden and monstrous, flicked from side to side as it moved closer. Its massive chest expanded with slow, deliberate breaths as it searched, sniffed.
The three of them didn’t dare breathe.
Steve knew the options: attack now and risk being swarmed, or remain perfectly still. It was no contest. They couldn’t afford to be seen—not yet.
The goblin was checking everything, every angle, just like a predator surveying its kill zone. Each moment dragged like a lifetime. The tension was unbearable, a thick knot pressing down on their lungs.
And then...
It paused.
It sniffed the air one last time, then let out a grunt.
Turning its back, it began to walk away, its steps thumping against the forest floor.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
The sound of safety returning, one step at a time. Each reverberation of its heavy feet brought a little more hope.
Eventually, the footsteps faded completely, absorbed by the dense woods.
It was gone, without a doubt. They had made it through.
Sigh
Whew
The magic guard exhaled a sharp breath and leaned to the side of the rocky pillar where she’d been hiding, her body trembling. She shut her eyes tight, still trying to keep herself steady. Her arms were shaking; she was still clutching the weapons, but her knuckles were pale.
She opened her eyes and looked back at Steve.
Steve parted his lips to whisper something, maybe a name, maybe a thanks.
But before the words could leave his throat—
CRACK!
The rock the magic guard was leaning against was suddenly yanked backward with terrifying force—ripped away like paper. She fell back with a startled cry, her weapons clattering across the forest floor.
Her scream caught in her throat as her eyes widened in horror.
A massive beast stood above her.
There was no time to think. No time to scream. Just fear—raw, electric fear that stole every ounce of control.
She tried to move, in an attempt to unsheath her blade, but the goblin grabbed her with one sweeping motion, its thick hand wrapping around her waist as if she were weightless. She screamed now, loud and shrill, the sound piercing the air like glass.
"No! NOO!! Steve! Fiona! Help!"
Fiona surged up instinctively, her fists clenched, teeth bared, ready to charge.
But Steve—Steve was faster.
He grabbed her arm with one hand, and with the other, covered her mouth before she could scream. Her whole body trembled with desperation.
The magic guard’s voice rang out again, frantic, broken.
"No! Please! Don’t let it take me! Please, I don’t want to die!"
Steve held Fiona back with all his strength. She was fighting, clawing, trying to break free, her eyes filled with utter confusion.
’Huh?...Stevien? What’re you...What’re you doing??’
But Steve was well aware. Any movement, any sound... and they’d all be dead.
The goblin stared down at the magic guard, her legs thrashing in the air. Her eyes glistened, wide and panicked, her voice nothing but pure, shrieking horror.
And then—it began to squeeze.
Its fingers wrapped tighter and tighter around her body. She cried louder, her voice rising to a pitch of agony. Her body jerked. Her arms flailed...and then-
Snap.
Blood sprayed across the goblin’s chest and splattered on the earth below. The scream stopped instantly.
The magic guard’s body went limp.
And then it dropped her.
Her lifeless form crumpled to the ground with a dull, final thud.
Steve and Fiona could only stare, mouths agape, hearts broken.
She had been alive just moments ago.
And now—
Nothing.
Just...silence.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Following the recent ruckus from the magic guard’s death-
The sound of more footsteps—many this time. Dozens. Maybe more. Reverberating through the woods, coming from every direction. The clan. The goblin clan.
They were coming...and there was no where left to go.
