Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 123: Once a Teacher, Forever a Father
May 21st, Grain Buds, light rain.
"In the next few days, there will be lots of rain, not much work in the field, so we can take it easy," Ding Weihuo said, smiling at the misty rainy weather, "I just hope the rain doesn’t overdo it."
"Dad, let’s go to the county these days then, look at houses, buy some furniture, and live for a while," Yi Roujing suggested.
"Sure." Ding Weihuo agreed, and Li Hongying didn’t refuse, her mouth even curled up in a smile, her heart filled with anticipation.
"You all take a break today, your mom and I will go and cut pig grass for the morning." Ding Weihuo protected his children, "You’ll all be working in the county, so no need to do any work anymore, I already talked to the team leader yesterday, and he’s approved."
"Dad, you’re spoiling us too much. Elder sister-in-law and Anmin might be okay, but I’m a man, can’t have my parents working on my behalf." Ding Anguo said while shoveling a few bites of rice porridge.
Ding Weihuo laughed upon hearing this, "Haha, alright, then just us two grown men will go and work, Hongying, you rest at home today."
"Alright, we’ll have hand-rolled noodles for lunch today." Li Hongying said with a sweet smile.
"Mom’s hand-rolled noodles are the best." Ding Anmin exclaimed, "Xingchen, you must try them later."
"Okay," Xia Xingchen nodded with a smile.
"Xingchen, you can start packing your things. When we go to the county, you’ll stay with us, sharing a room with Anmin." Ding Weihuo said kindly.
"Sure, I’ll be relying on uncle and aunt for care in the future." Xia Xingchen smiled, her eyes crescent-shaped, exceptionally bright.
"Elder Ren’s medical skills are indeed good, Xingchen’s complexion has improved so much these days." Li Hongying said sincerely.
Li Hongying really likes Xingchen. In the past, she had the thought that having such a daughter-in-law would be wonderful, but back then Anguo didn’t have a job, so she didn’t dare to dream, after all, she was a city girl; now Anguo has a job, but she also sees that a friend from Ancheng likes Xingchen, so she can only treat her like her own daughter.
"Yes, Elder Ren said the effects are good, I plan to visit the commune health center for a checkup from Elder Ren before going to the city." Xia Xingchen said.
"I’ll accompany you there." Yi Roujing said.
"Me too." Ding Anmin chimed in, having understood the reason elder sister-in-law wanted Xingchen to stay with the family after the bamboo grove incident.
"Anguo, take over the cattle work today, let Mr. Qi rest, and we’ll go over to discuss later." Yi Roujing said.
"Alright, elder sister-in-law." Ding Anguo nodded.
"Elder sister-in-law, we’re heading to the city, what about Mr. Qi?" Ding Anmin was a bit worried, they’ve learned a lot following Mr. Qi these days, "By the way, I haven’t finished learning Russian."
"Your dad and I will still be here. Even if you live in the city, how long can you stay? Besides, you have weekends off, you can come back every week to learn." Li Hongying lightly tapped her daughter’s forehead, "And you all should avoid trouble, the team isn’t free of gossip."
"It was fine before, but now you all have jobs, if you’re labeled anything, what happens if you lose your jobs?"
"Yes, we’ll be careful." Yi Roujing answered.
"But still be mindful, as we can’t guarantee that there aren’t some who are envious of others’ good fortune." Ding Weihuo reminded.
"Yes, Dad."
After breakfast, Yi Roujing went to the cattle shed alone with an umbrella and a basket, avoiding unwanted attention.
By this time, the cattle had already been taken away by Ding Anguo, but Mr. Qi was not idle, tidying up the cattle’s living quarters, which smelled foul, but Mr. Qi seemed not to notice, going in and out doing the chores.
"Mr. Qi." Yi Roujing called out with a smile.
Holding straw under the eaves to replace with new ones, Mr. Qi lifted his head and saw Yi Roujing, his facial expression softened immediately.
"Roujing’s here, come and have a seat inside."
Mr. Qi put down the dirty straw in his hands, washed his hands, tidied himself up before entering his own room.
The door board was no longer padded with straw but old bedding, softer than straw, warmer too, with the quilt and mattress cover all brought over by Yi Roujing.
Although the weather was getting hotter, Mr. Qi was elderly after all, covering with these was just right.
Things in the room had increased over these days, the water tank had gotten bigger, the previous small tank was dried and used for storing grain, a wooden box was added, a simple countertop was built, allowing for many things to be placed, and there was a small square table and two stools in the middle of the room, made by Ding Anguo carrying wood home, worked on together with Ding Weihuo.
Now this room looked like a place for people to live.
The room carried a faint scent of medicine, though not strong, the makeshift stove had been moved under the eaves outside the cattle shed, Yi Roujing had gotten medication for Mr. Qi, bothered Elder Ren to provide the medicine, after taking it for a while, Mr. Qi’s health had somewhat been restored.
"Mr. Qi, in a few days we’ll all be heading to the county, we’ll come back to see you on weekends." Yi Roujing explained her intention.
"No worries, no worries, I’m fine without you all worrying now." Mr. Qi waved, "But it seems there might be no more opportunities for me to teach you all anymore."
Mr. Qi’s tone contained a hint of reluctance and regret.
"We can still come back to learn on weekends. Mr. Qi might even give us assignments, and when we return you can check them." Yi Roujing said, giving Mr. Qi something to hold onto, making time easier to bear.
Mr. Qi was indeed happy upon hearing this, nodding continuously.
"Don’t be stingy with food, we’ll soon be earning salaries, Mr. Qi, take good care of yourself." Yi Roujing opened the basket and took the items out one by one.
Malted milk, milk candy, peach crisps, cured meat, but the main items were grains, two small bags of refined grains, white flour and rice, each weighing three pounds.
"You brought so much again." Mr. Qi felt a surge of emotion; no one had ever been so kind to him before, back when he was doing well, many visited him, bringing stuff, but mostly with hidden agendas; when he fell, not just those outsiders, even his own children trampled on him when he was down, he was already disheartened back then.
Thinking he might die in this cow pen, Mr. Qi didn’t expect to encounter Yi Roujing, who took care of him, got medicine, and hadn’t stopped bringing good things these days, he kept it all in mind.
Yi Roujing’s sincerity and kindness touched him deeply, only hoping he could repay her if he had the ability in the future.
"Once a teacher, forever a father, Mr. Qi should take care of his health and repay us with knowledge, we still want to learn more." Yi Roujing said with a smile.
