Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 125: Going to the County Town
May 25th, Friday, the weather is overcast.
The clouds in the sky gradually thinned. It had been raining for several days, and it looked like it was about to clear up. Ding Weihuo explained the situation to Ding Xiaoding, saying he wanted to go to the city for a few days to see where the children worked. Ding Xiaoding readily agreed, even suggesting that since the busy farming season was still some time away, they could stay for a few more days.
The Ding family, plus Xia Xingchen, a total of six people, carried large bags, and Ding Weihuo and Ding Anguo even brought some grain. They got on a tractor heading to the commune.
When they got on the bus, since everyone had a lot of luggage, people in those days were simple and unpretentious. No one said anything about the number of people in the Ding family group. When they got off the bus, Ding Ancheng was waiting at the Huaixi County station and had borrowed a bicycle from Wang Bingzhi to help carry the grain bags.
"Why did you bring so many things?" Ding Ancheng was genuinely surprised, as there were four large bags of grain and bedding supplies like quilts and pillows that Li Hongying and Ding Anmin carried on their backs.
Yi Roujing and Xia Xingchen each held the group’s clothes, including a basket of vegetables picked from their home’s private plot.
"Everything in the city costs money. We just brought what we have from home," Li Hongying said. "Besides, we came in a hurry this time, and things like blankets are hard to get. It’s good that it’s getting warm now."
Ding Ancheng rode the bicycle to take a load of things to the house on Bright Alley first, dropped them off, and then came back to transport more. Yi Roujing knew the way and led the others on foot.
When Li Hongying saw the house near the entrance of an alley that was quite spacious, her eyes lit up, "Is this the place?"
"Yes, Mom. Thanks to Aunt Hanjuan, we had three places to choose from. After comparing, this one was the best fit," Yi Roujing explained with a smile, "Let’s go inside and have a look."
Yi Roujing had already seen it, but she didn’t mind looking again. She had been busy these days, frequently going back and forth between the county and the team. This house had changed since she first saw it; a lot of furniture had been added. Beds were placed in every room, curtains were hung, and the kitchen was fully equipped with all the necessary utensils that could be bought.
Not only that, but the couple’s room at County First Middle School was also furnished with many things. She had checked them all at once, and the satisfying result was that a lot of money and tickets were spent.
"Wow, there’s even a grape arbor. The well water is so clear; we won’t have to haul water anymore." Ding Anmin was delighted, darting in and out.
"Wow, Mom, Xingchen, come quickly, this room is so pink." Ding Anmin’s girlish enthusiasm overflowed; the pink curtains and the rare white-painted wardrobe, along with matching painted desks, stools, and beds, looked like a complete set.
Yi Roujing followed her in, "Anmin, This is the room you’ll share with Xingchen."
"Really!" Ding Anmin was so excited, everything in the room seemed even more beautiful to her.
"Mom, let me show you the room you and Dad will be staying in," Yi Roujing guided them to the largest room in the main house, reserved for Ding Weihuo and Li Hongying.
The furniture inside was in brown tones, the curtains were blue. After Li Hongying walked into the room, she carefully touched the round table, stools, bed, and cabinets, saying, "Why did you get us so much furniture? We don’t need it that much, and we won’t be living here permanently."
"Besides, this room is the biggest. It should have been for you and Ancheng." Although Li Hongying liked it, she didn’t want to stay in that room.
"Mom, Ancheng managed to get the couple’s housing permission," Yi Roujing said with a smile, "This house has four rooms in total. You and Dad take one, Anguo takes one, Anmin and Xingchen take one, and I planned to leave one for my third brother."
"Your third brother can just share a room with Anguo when he comes, especially since Dad and I won’t be staying long; they can each have their own room. In the end, this house you bought can’t not have a room for you and Ancheng." Li Hongying disagreed.
"Mom, we’ll go and see the house at County First Middle School after lunch, and you’ll understand," Yi Roujing said with a smile, "Also, I think Mom and Dad will end up staying here more, especially when Anguo gets married. This household definitely needs elders to look after it."
The other two rooms were similarly decorated, fully furnished, and bright. Ding Anguo was very satisfied with them.
"Thank you, Big Sister-in-law." Ding Anguo knew it was Yi Roujing who had been busy these days, and the results exceeded his expectations.
"Big Sister-in-law, you have great taste." Ding Anmin came out of her room and had looked at the other three rooms, but she was most satisfied with the one she would live in. "Where did you find these white cabinets and such?"
"I went to the furniture factory to have a look, thinking you might like it," Yi Roujing said with a slight smile, "I also furnished the school house with white furniture."
In the kitchen, the cookware was complete. Li Hongying brought over grains and vegetables, along with a few pieces of cured meat. Ding Ancheng’s suggestion to take everyone to the state restaurant was turned down by them all.
However, Yi Roujing didn’t mind; she thought Li Hongying’s cooking tasted better.
"Ancheng, how’s the job arrangement for your third brother-in-law?" Ding Weihuo asked Ding Ancheng about it before lunch.
"It’s all set," Ding Ancheng replied. "He started as an apprentice on the twentieth. I’ve asked about it."
"That’s good, that’s good," Ding Weihuo nodded repeatedly, "In the future, try to find opportunities for your other two brothers-in-law as well. I’m confident in your capabilities, and I’ve always trusted you to make it work."
"Roujing is becoming more and more wonderful. Dad can see you really love her. No matter what happens in the future, don’t ever let her down."
"Yes, I understand, Dad." Ding Ancheng answered with a smile. Seeing this, Ding Weihuo was overjoyed, as it was rare to see his eldest son smile, which meant he truly cared.
"Let’s meet up with Jing after lunch and find your third brother-in-law so he can get acquainted with us. In the future, he’ll live with us," Ding Ancheng suggested.
"Great, great," Ding Weihuo nodded in agreement.
Li Hongying used the ingredients to cook an ample feast, including white rice, stir-fried cured meat, bitter gourd omelette, stir-fried lettuce, cool mixed dandelion, braised eggplant, and smashed cucumber, each dish ample in portion.
"Ancheng, deliver the meal to Weiliang first; there’s nothing good to eat at the cafeteria," Li Hongying instructed, packing rice into an aluminum box and putting stir-fried cured meat in another, adding a few pinches of vegetables, then urging Ding Ancheng to take them by bike.
"I’ll go along," Yi Roujing offered, grabbing the lunch box and sitting on the bike’s back seat.
"Take your time, there’s still a soup waiting to be made; it’ll be ready when you return," Li Hongying called out loudly.
"The money for ginseng, agarwood, and lingzhi came through—three thousand in total," said Ding Ancheng, riding the bike and sharing the good news with Yi Roujing.
"Really, that’s wonderful," Yi Roujing exclaimed. Though she initially worried about the expenses they incurred, the return now surpassed it several times over.
