Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 14: Merit of the Bamboo Rat
The group approaching from the front were familiar faces from the knowledge youth point, and the female lead Song Zhiluo was also among them. Yi Roujing took a few careful glances, then looked at Ding Ancheng.
Ding Ancheng didn’t even glance sideways; however, Song Zhiluo did shoot Ding Ancheng two looks.
But those two looks weren’t awkward at all since there were countless girls around eyeing Ding Ancheng. Such a knack for attracting attention, Yi Roujing was impressed.
Considering her own looks should be top-notch too, how come she didn’t have the same charm as Ding Ancheng, Yi Roujing introspected silently.
"Oh, good cabbage got rooted by a pig." The speaker was a fellow knowledge youth Yi Roujing had seen before, that dark-skinned and straightforward girl named Tong Dongxue.
Yi Roujing glanced at her but didn’t respond. Whoever agrees admits it—she’s not stupid.
Ding Anmin, seeing Yi Roujing’s restraint, looked at her approvingly and whispered closely, "You did well today. When you’re out there, it’s not just about you. It’s also about my big brother, so you can’t keep losing face. Doing this earns men respect."
Yi Roujing laughed, with a hint of amusement, glancing at Ding Ancheng. She didn’t do it to earn face for him; she just didn’t want to be fooled herself.
However, that glance was caught by Ding Ancheng. Yi Roujing slowly shifted her gaze away to avoid his eyes.
This guy’s eyes are like radars. How many times has she been caught in such a short time?
Ding Ancheng realized the biggest difference about Yi Roujing. In the past, she wouldn’t dare look at him, but now she doesn’t really want to.
"Teacher Ding."
Yi Roujing didn’t stop walking, but Ding Ancheng did, since Song Zhiluo respectfully stood in his way, and successfully diverted his gaze from Yi Roujing.
However, Yi Roujing couldn’t leave either because Ding Anmin held her back.
"And you are?" Ding Ancheng looked at the young woman blocking his path, with no memory in mind. Yi Roujing found it hard to suppress her laughter at the sight of it; he was really too amusing.
Is there going to be some plot about chasing the wife to the burial ground? The male lead doesn’t even recognize the female lead. Oh, my goodness, this is hilarious!
Song Zhiluo’s expression stiffened for a moment, Yi Roujing noticed, tightly pursing her lips—she couldn’t afford to offend the male and female leads, both were people with backgrounds.
"Teacher Ding, I am Song Zhiluo, a knowledge youth from the Dingping Production Team. Previously, with your help, I got recommended to serve as a temporary math teacher at the elementary school in the team." Song Zhiluo replied.
Ding Ancheng remembered, "Mm, do well."
"Yes, thank you, Teacher Ding. I will not let down Teacher Ding’s trust." Song Zhiluo bowed to Ding Ancheng and walked away.
The team even has an elementary school, no wonder the female lead is so fair-skinned; she doesn’t have to work in the fields.
However, the book didn’t describe this part; it just mentioned the male and female leads first met at the Dingping Production Team, with little further introduction, understandable, since my character as the original wife should have already died by now. Ding Ancheng left Huaixi County not long after the original died.
Their romantic relationship mainly started in Jing City, a marriage matched in social status. But unexpectedly, before the male lead could return, the female lead already developed feelings for him. His charm is truly great.
"Sister-in-law, what are you thinking about?"
"Charming..." Yi Roujing smiled at Ding Anmin, "Your big brother is quite charming."
Ding Anmin rolled her eyes, "Obviously, otherwise, why would you go to any lengths just to marry my big brother?"
Yi Roujing’s smile cracked—damn it, she forgot her current identity. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"Let’s go." Ding Ancheng turned back to look at the two of them and said.
For some reason, Yi Roujing felt those two words were spoken with a touch of amusement.
When Ding Ancheng and Ding Anmin carried their baskets and scythes, with Yi Roujing holding a basket trailing aimlessly behind, she suddenly felt uneasy. What was Ding Ancheng’s deal, not helping his dad, mom, and brother in the fields but climbing the mountain with them two girls to gather pigweed? This job doesn’t seem to suit a high-status good-looking guy.
"I saw some rhododendrons in the house, go have fun yourself." Ding Ancheng turned back and said to Yi Roujing.
Yi Roujing pouted slightly, as if suggesting she was just having fun rather than working, she shot him a dissatisfied look and went to have fun, feeling cheated.
Yi Roujing picked a twig here and a flower there. Before long, she had a bunch. Seeing Ding Ancheng and Ding Anmin engrossed in their work, she couldn’t have fun anymore, glaring at Ding Ancheng from behind and then went to gather wild vegetables.
During this season, wild vegetables were the freshest. Yi Roujing found quite a few, including fern sprouts, Chinese toon buds, and many more wild vegetables with medicinal value, so she couldn’t help picking more.
When she discovered the spring bamboo shoots, Yi Roujing’s eyes lit up, and she dug up quite a few. But when she turned around, she froze, because a head was poking out of a hole in the ground facing away from her; it was the head of a rat.
"Ah——"
Yi Roujing screamed with her eyes closed. She wasn’t afraid of snakes, but rats terrified her. She remained in a squatting position, screaming her heart out.
"What happened, what happened..." Ding Anmin had never heard Yi Roujing scream like this before. Unlike the hysterical outbursts, this scream carried genuine fear. She worried that Yi Roujing might be in danger.
Yi Roujing had walked some distance, so Ding Anmin couldn’t immediately pinpoint her location. However, Ding Ancheng quickly darted off in a southeast direction, and Ding Anmin hurried to follow.
They arrived at a small bamboo grove to find a person and a rat facing off. The person had her eyes tightly shut, screaming fearfully; the bamboo rat peeking out of its hole trembled but didn’t retreat back into its hole.
Yi Roujing was shaking, and Ding Ancheng grabbed her arm and pulled her up to a standing position.
Ding Anmin stepped forward, seized the bamboo rat, and lifted it out, "Alright, it’s fine now."
Yi Roujing’s screams ceased, she cautiously opened her right eye, and then she saw the massive rat in her view, instantly paling, instinctively seeking a safe spot.
Ding Ancheng felt a soft collision against his chest, looked down to see Yi Roujing clutching his vest, her head resting against his chest. Her legs must have gone weak as her whole body was just slightly curled up, trembling slightly in his embrace.
"Not to this extent..." Ding Anmin was somewhat surprised, but then she realized the extremely ambiguous position of her older brother and sister-in-law. She quickly turned around, "I’ll take the bamboo rat first; brother, comfort sister-in-law, she’s scared."
Comfort? Scared?
Yi Roujing’s mind slowly cleared up. In front of her was a wall-like presence, emitting warmth.
"Huh—" Yi Roujing suddenly jumped back, placing a step away, leaving grasp marks clearly visible on Ding Ancheng’s blue sweater vest.
Uh, how to explain this, it wasn’t like she was intentionally taking advantage.
Yi Roujing’s face was a bit pale, distinctly different from her usual fair complexion. Ding Ancheng could tell she was genuinely frightened, "Are you okay?"
"Ah, oh, no, I’m fine." Yi Roujing stuttered, smiling awkwardly, her hands flailing around uncontrollably, which Ding Ancheng found slightly endearing.
