Chapter 178: Sun Purification Ritual [ 1 ]

After a few hours of carefully flying through Hanazora, we arrived in front of a large mountain range that was several times bigger than anything either of us had seen so far.

If I had to guess, these mountains were similar to the Ancient Dragon Mountains.

At least in size and height, anyway.

Their shape wasn’t as interesting though.

"Are the Sun Vampires in those mountains?" Clementine asked.

I nodded.

"Yeah... I can see a bunch of energies here. All of them are leading toward that wall over there."

Pointing at the side of the mountain, I narrowed my eyes further. Seeing the stones faintly flickering, I realized that the entrance was literally just an illusion.

But if I noticed it, that means the Sun Vampires have also noticed us.

I gently elbowed Clementine, and as we discussed, the two of us suddenly began pulling out heaps of jewelry, all of which had the amber gemstone in it.

It seemed like complete silence fell across the whole mountain range, when just a moment ago, I heard all sorts of bird and animal sounds.

Just then, I sensed someone staring at me, which soon escalated into several dozen people. Only after a few more seconds did I see a slim, golden-haired silhouette step through the illusion and meet my gaze.

With a slight smile, that very same figure nodded at me and gestured with his arms for us to approach, so that’s exactly what we did.

We flew down beside the Sun Vampire and finally got a clear view of him.

His hair and eyes were golden, much like the rest of his race.

But more importantly, he was dressed in pitch black clothes that made his vibrant jewelry stand out even more. Most of it was just amber, but there was some amethyst, ruby, and even diamonds.

His earrings were made out of diamonds, and so were the two rings he was wearing.

Power-wise? He was on the lower end of being a Vampire Noble, so probably a Grade 30, or 35 at most.

Even so...

"We came here to offer a tribute, if you don’t mind."

Before the Sun Vampire could ask the question I knew he was going to ask, I offered him an amber ring.

"Would you like to be our guide?"

The Sun Vampire’s smile widened. He accepted the ring, put it on, and then bowed slightly.

"My name’s Obel. I’m guessing you two already know how all of this works?"

"Yep. I’ll give you extra if you can keep the lower Grade Sun Vampires away from us," I replied.

He narrowed his eyes slightly.

But he knew exactly what I was talking about.

After all, the lesser Sun Vampires were like beggars when it came to people who had a bunch of jewelry to spare.

I didn’t want them to swarm us and ruin our experience.

Obel didn’t say a word, and instead turned toward the illusory entrance and finally stepped forward.

Clementine and I exchanged a glance and did the same.

The moment we stepped through the illusion, we found ourselves on a completely white marble bridge, hanging over a massive chasm below.

Not only that, there were tens, if not hundreds, of Sun Vampires huddled on the marble bridge.

All of them had their own unique patterns of jewelry, but obviously, everyone also looked at me and Clementine with greedy expressions, clearly wanting to rip us off.

But before they could even open their mouths to call out to us, a faint golden glow appeared in Obel’s eyes.

In the next instant, the Sun Vampires fell to their knees one by one as they lost consciousness.

"Uh...?"

I gently elbowed Clementine again, causing her to snap out of it.

Just like that, we stepped over the bodies of the Sun Vampires and crossed the marble bridge.

Although I never saw this place in the game, I’ve heard a bunch of rumors, and honestly?

It was just like the rumors.

Thousands of homes neatly carved into the walls. Unlike the siren homes, these were decorated very nicely, and there were clear patterns of dragons, phoenixes, and whatever else the carvers had in mind.

Aside from the onlookers, which I ignored, I was more curious about how this place worked at all.

There was a clear sky overhead, as well as an overly large sun.

I knew it was real, because I felt my skin burn the longer I was here.

You couldn’t see this place from above either.

Was this some kind of Space Gift stuff?

If I follow the Mastery of Telekinesis and learn how to bend space, could I do something like this too?

Heh.

I can’t wait.

"Do you care about the destinations in the slightest?" Obel asked.

"Not really."

"Yes. What’s that?"

Clementine pointed at the only small golden tree in this whole place, her voice brimming with curiosity and excitement.

On the other hand, I just let out a sigh and crossed my arms.

"That’s the tree our ancestors left behind. It’s a bad luck charm, so don’t touch it."

"Is it because it’s made of gold?"

Obel nodded.

"That’s right."

Clementine tilted her head.

"Why’s gold seen as unlucky?"

"...Our ancestor was betrayed, and then melted alongside gold into five gold bars. The one who betrayed our ancestor made jewelry out of four of the gold bars, and..."

He pointed at the golden tree.

"The betrayer used the remaining gold bar to coat the whole tree in gold, before ultimately vanishing. Our history books end there, but our resentment fortunately remains." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"...O-Oh."

She turned to me, and I just shrugged.

Obviously, I already knew all of this.

I was a lore-obsessed geek who went as far as capturing a Sun Vampire and making it recite its whole history book ten times.

...Can’t say I’m really proud of that, but I was a teeny tiny bit drunk, so it’s whatever.

"Can we move on, or would you like to ask some more questions, miss?" Obel asked.

Clementine shook her head repeatedly, clearly understanding that she might accidentally trigger the whole race with all her questions.

After all, a bunch of them already heard Obel’s explanation right now and began walking around with sour looks.

Anyway...

We continued forward until finally, we reached a stone staircase leading upward to the sky.

This was the only area in the whole weird Space Gift domain that had clouds surrounding it, so I couldn’t even see what’s at the top of the staircase.

More importantly, each of the steps was literally as tall as me. Though, they probably had to increase the size because of just how many gemstones there were on this staircase.

Either way, as I glanced at Obel, who took the first step by jumping up, Clementine and I soon followed.
