Transmigrated As The Final Villain of a Death Game-Chapter 204: Insight [ 2 ]
"For starters, after you disappeared, with no proof being found, the emperor as well as most of the people in the city thought you were actually still alive."
I tilted my head slightly.
"Didn’t the headmaster confirm my death? Wouldn’t they believe him?"
"Believe the man who has no emotions? In all honesty, the only time we believe him is when he tells us the weather," she deadpanned.
I let out a chuckle.
Honestly, I thought he had more respect than that. Clearly not, though.
"Still, with the possibility of you being alive, everyone started trying to hunt you. Fast forward a few months, and after your new identity was revealed, alongside your bounty, people stopped searching for you."
Evelyn leaned against her office table and crossed her arms.
"Your name inspires more fear than you’d expect. But even if the normal folks stopped trying to chase you, there’s been an attack group formed whose sole purpose is to kill you two."
"I believe they’re still in the process of recruitment, but I’m sure with you turning up here, they’ll attack you sometime during the gala, or slightly after it."
I gave her a quick nod.
Can’t say I was really worried about some people trying to kill us. If anything, I hope they come along so Clementine can get some new soldiers.
"Enough about us. I get that our reputation is a bit odd and all, but I’m more curious about how the others are progressing."
By others, she clearly knew what I meant.
"I see... In that case, Kevin was really reluctant at the start. He thought that I was trying to trick him."
Sure.
"He came around once one of my divinations saved him from certain death. Then, with the knowledge that you gave us, he started cooperating."
I felt like there was a little more to it than that, but obviously, since Kevin and the others would come along soon, I knew I’d find out more from them later.
And as if realizing that, Evelyn decided to skip the boring stuff about each of the people she recruited here and went straight to the important bits.
"Isabelle has stagnated. Her stats aren’t increasing anymore. Only the mastery of her Gift is."
What...?
"Is she not pushing herself?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"She’s pushing herself more than anyone else. I don’t understand what the problem is either. I hoped you’d know something, since she told me you helped her improve her strength last time."
Right as I was about to reply, Clementine chimed in:
"It’s probably soul damage."
Both of us turned toward her. She sat up and, with her hair a little messy, smiled at us.
"When I saw her in the classroom, her soul looked tangled. I don’t know what she did or who she fought, but the reason she’s not improving is because her soul was damaged. I can heal her when she comes later, so you don’t have to worry about that."
Wow...
"T-That works."
Evelyn nodded at her, then at me.
"That really works. Good. In that case, there’s only one important matter to discuss before we move on to the money talk."
She straightened her back and approached me.
Just as she was about to sit down beside me, Clementine coughed and glared fiercely at Evelyn. She was left with no choice but to back off again with a slight pout.
Still, she was a professional woman.
"It’s about the gala..."
Taking a deep breath, she continued:
"A group of people are planning to assassinate the emperor during the ceremony. Not only that, there were rumors of a demonic faction existing inside the Future Academy. They’re also going to assemble and strike during the gala."
My eyes widened slightly.
In the original game, there was no assassination attempt against the emperor. Actually, he was quite loved by the people of Aldraazan, and honestly, the rest of the continent.
So much so that despite the demon descent, he was able to die from old age before finally giving his position to one of his successors.
What is happening here is, I guess, uncharted territory for me.
But since it’s not the first time I dealt with non-canon events, I wasn’t too worried.
Though I did need the emperor alive. Without him, the power struggle of the successors would give demons easy access to power. If that were to happen, then we’d be at a very big disadvantage.
As for the demonic faction... She’s probably talking about Merilyn, the Grade 22 succubus. I was already aware of her, but if she’s planning to act already, there’s a very big problem that I needed to address.
She and the headmaster are definitely acquainted.
Both of them knew what the other did.
The headmaster had a connection to a demon king, the same one whose blood I had ingested.
What are the odds Alexius goes all out and cooperates with Merilyn by getting a demon king to kill the emperor?
Shit...
This was way trickier than I had thought.
"I divined that there would be two people who’d be at the core of the tragedy, that is, the emperor’s death. I believe those people are you two."
I pointed at myself.
"You think I’d kill the emperor?"
She rolled her eyes.
"I don’t see the whole future. I just know that you two are the deciding factor between the emperor’s life and death. There was also Kevin, but his importance wasn’t as high as yours." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Aha.
Yeah.
This is definitely going to be more troublesome than I thought.
"Got any ideas how the two of us could get in without causing too much of a fuss?" I asked.
Then, I showed her my appearance-changing ring.
"If anything, Clementine and I can change our hair and eye color."
The moment I said those words, Evelyn smirked at me.
"As it so happens, there are a few nobles who owe me. I can help you disguise yourselves as them, and that should reduce all the suspicion, unless you do something stupid."
"As if we’d do anything stupid. Just give us the identities later."
"Later?"
Mhm.
I glanced at her slightly open door and heard a bunch of footsteps coming toward us.
Obviously...
"Kevin and the others are coming."
