Chapter 232: The Survivors [ 1 ]

[Kevin’s POV]

"Waaah! Mama, your eyes!"

"Shhh... The demons will hear you, sweetie... come here..."

Is this really how it needs to be?

I already knew it was coming... but was there really no way to avoid it?

Demons...

"Yo. With that scrunched up look on your face, I can’t tell if you’re constipated or in thought. What’s up?" Melina said, tapping on my shoulder.

Turning around, I noticed that her hair was a little messier than usual. There was also a bit of dirt on her chin.

Right as I was about to point it out, she lightly punched me on the shoulder.

"Snap out of it. Isabelle’s calling, so let’s go."

"...Okay."

Giving the shelter one final look, I decided to follow after Melina.

Two days had passed since the demons descended, or was it three? I couldn’t tell, since all I had been doing since they descended was fight, fight, and fight.

A lot of people died, and those demons wiped Aldraazan off the map. The only thing that remained of the city was our academy.

The headmaster might’ve betrayed us... but for some reason, he never removed his barriers around the academy, so it was like a safe haven for those who survived.

We’re also staying here, since powerful demons are surrounding this place. I don’t think even with Melina and Isabelle we’d be able to actually break through and escape.

The only people who could help us were Amon and Clementine... but they disappeared.

By now, I’m sure they forgot about us. Why wouldn’t they? They were so much stronger than the rest of us. They could just live in paradise while the rest of us suffer and die.

Clenching my fists, I was reminded of why I hated those two. Finally, I arrived in our old classroom.

Isabelle was standing by the lectern and writing something on a piece of paper. Out of everyone here, she was working the hardest. As for the rest of her siblings, they were somewhere on campus, being protected by some palace mages that somehow survived.

Still...

"Yo, Isabelle. Finish writing that letter?" Melina asked, walking up to her.

Isabelle paused for a moment, then turned to her.

"I sent five already. I got back two letters. The whole world is like this, not only us. But... on the bright side, the people who were in seclusion getting stronger finally woke up. Hundreds of Grade 50 and 60 beings emerged, so now they’re repelling the demons. We might get help soon."

She put down her quill and leaned against the lectern.

She was tired, even more than the rest of us, so I didn’t say anything, deciding to give her a break.

Though...

"Kevin, you might have to do another food trip into the forest. We’re out already."

My eyes widened.

"I got food just this morning. What do you mean we’re out?"

"We’re out. The nobles monopolized their food, caused a fight, and then during that fight, the food was destroyed," Isabelle said.

Melina scoffed.

"Tsk. I should just get rid of those nobles. What do you think, Kevin?"

"No. We’re not killing anyone."

They were trash, but no one deserved to die.

To my surprise, both Melina and Isabelle gave me fed-up expressions. I couldn’t understand it... why was everyone so eager to kill each other?

If we killed everyone who pissed us off, then who would we have left to fight with? Even the weakest man could be trained and help us out.

Them dying is just... wrong. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"Well, goodie-two-shoes still has his diapers on, so there’s nothing we can do. I bet he’d let a demon live here too, so long as that demon was nice."

I furrowed my brows.

"Excuse me?"

Melina cocked her head back.

"Yeah. Excuse you. We all knew this was going to happen. We had plenty of time to prepare for this, and now you’re risking everyone’s lives thinking you could save every single person here while keeping the cancerous kind of people around?"

She took a step forward and abruptly grabbed my collar.

"Remember that mother and daughter duo you were just staring at? Yeah. Those two are going to be the first to go once you bring back food next time. Do you expect a blind mother and a frail child to speak up for themselves to grab some food for the two of them? Let alone enough food to feed them both and not make them a target?"

I felt my anger boil, but right as I was about to reply, Isabelle chimed in:

"That’s enough, you two. We’ll deal with this later. For now—"

BOOOOOOOOOOOM!

An explosion resounded within the academy, causing the ground beneath me to slightly tremble. My eyes widened, and the moment Melina and I quickly exchanged a glance, we both burst out in a sprint.

We entered the hallway and were immediately greeted with tens of people running away, screaming for their lives and pushing over each other.

I wanted to stop and help them out, but Melina gripped my wrist fiercely and forced me to keep going. Eventually, we reached the source of the explosion, and to both of our surprise, there was a hole in the wall.

Through it, I saw dozens of Demon Barons, Demon Viscounts, and more importantly, Demon Earls.

There were at least fifty Demon Earls, and even one or two Demon Marquesses.

Even with all that training we went through, it’s...

"Snap out of it, you righteous cornball. Step back."

Just then, Melina raised her hands and put them over her mouth. In the next instant, strange, bird-like sounds resounded, quickly repairing the wall ahead.

But even then, the demons weren’t idiots. When they saw what was happening, they kicked off the ground and abruptly approached us. Gripping my sword, I was prepared to put my life down to hold the fort.

Yet to my genuine surprise, a crimson scythe glimmered out of nowhere as a man wearing a mask and a cape suddenly appeared, effortlessly severing the heads of two Marquess Grade Demons as though they were made out of butter.

Quiet and efficient...

A powerful burst of energy ensued from the destruction of the Marquess Grade Demons’ cores, causing every single demon to turn their heads toward the masked man and then growl in anger.

But instead of fearing for his life or running away, the man raised his scythe confidently and said:

"How generous of you demons to come to me."
