Chapter 235: The Survivors [ 4 ]

The moment she uttered those words, I felt an invisible barrier form around her.

Surprisingly, even the little girl was pushed back, so I rushed around the barrier and grabbed her before she could fall off the stage.

Not only that, I made sure to cover her eyes so she didn’t see all the blood and gore from the bodies of the dead nobles.

Because only now did I realize how ruthless Melina was.

She not only suffocated them but made sure to crush every bone and organ in their bodies... They were like flesh piñatas now, oozing blood and dyeing the stage red.

My stomach churned at that sight, but despite that, I focused on Melina, who, with one final breath, strengthened the barrier.

She closed her eyes for a brief moment, then abruptly reopened them, a slightly reluctant expression appearing on her face.

Then, for the first time since training, I heard Melina’s beautiful singing voice. Every word made my heart flutter, and with every sentence she finished, a colorful butterfly appeared and circled around her.

I wasn’t sure if it was an illusion... since I’ve never seen this before, but as more and more butterflies began to appear, causing her to form a pair of wings made entirely out of butterflies, I knew that this was definitely not an illusion.

But just then, every single one of those butterflies morphed into a beautiful white color before suddenly dissipating into a thin thread of energy that slowly entered the dead woman’s body.

With every passing moment, the woman’s wounds began to heal, and even the scars that were around her eyes seemed to vanish. Before long, her neck snapped back into place, and with a final body spasm, all of Melina’s energy entered the woman’s body.

A minute passed, then two... After ten whole minutes, the woman’s fingers suddenly twitched. My eyes widened since I was sure the woman was really dead earlier.

But as I saw the woman’s eyes slowly open and watched her take her first breaths, I was left in awe.

"M-Mama?" The girl stood up, her legs trembling.

"A-Are you..."

"Sarah?" the woman’s raspy voice resounded. Her throat almost seemed like it was blocked, and after saying just one word, she burst out into bloody coughs, causing the small girl to whimper as she thought her mother was dying again.

But Melina just let out a chuckle and assured the two of them:

"Her neck was snapped, so the blood vessels also burst. That’s where the blood’s coming from. In short, you’re fine, but just avoid speaking for at least the next 24 hours. My energy should stay in your body for that long, and it’ll heal you. If you want the healing to be as good as possible, then yeah, just don’t talk in long sentences."

The mother just nodded with a wide smile, then turned to her daughter.

In the next instant, her daughter ran over to her and jumped into her embrace, hugging her tightly and bawling her eyes out.

"Mama... Sniffle..."

Finally, Melina stood up, dusted herself off, then approached me and put her hands on her hips again.

"Sweet reunion, eh? Not everyone can have this kind of reunion, though. So make sure whenever you’re met with someone who could cause a lot of deaths, you do everything in your power to kill them."

She let out a giggle.

"After all, you’re less handsome when you act like an absolute pussy."

My brows twitched slightly, but I couldn’t say a word, knowing full well that what she was saying was the truth.

In the end, the mother and daughter duo eventually finished their reunion and followed us toward the special class. Once we entered, it was already full to the brim with people. Even the imperials and their mages were down here.

More importantly, Isabelle was in the very front, conducting the final information checks.

It seemed like we arrived at the very end too, since Isabelle glanced over at us and nodded.

"That’s the last of us. Rain here’s going to lead us, so make sure to stick close to him. He knows what he’s doing."

"Leave it to me," Rain said with a smile.

Everyone stayed silent, but they also put their trust in the two of them. And of course, with a final debrief and safety check, Isabelle, Rain, Melina, and I began leading the people straight toward the back of the academy where the training rooms were.

Then we entered one of the training rooms meant for endurance, and in the very corner, found a ladder leading downward.

Getting everyone down was chaotic, but with the nobles gone and only people who wanted to survive left, it became surprisingly easy.

So within just 20 minutes, everyone was down in the sewers, following after us while we followed after Rain.

For some reason, Rain seemed especially on edge, so I decided to slightly break formation and approach him.

"Hey, is there going to be something up ahead? You’re sweating."

Rain’s brow twitched.

"I’m sweating because it’s a sewer. It’s hot, it smells like shit, and I ate a pie for breakfast. How am I supposed to keep my composure when there are so many beautiful women staring at me whilst I’m holding back from shitting myself in front of them?"

"..."

"Are you sure Amon sent you?"

Rain pouted slightly.

"Why? Don’t I look reliable?"

Uhh...

"Well, your outfit’s cool, but you don’t act like someone Amon would be friends with."

"If he’s friends with someone like you, then he’d easily be friends with someone like me, lad," Rain replied nonchalantly.

Then he abruptly stopped and raised his scythe high up, causing everyone else to stop as well.

For a moment, I thought that we were spotted, or there were just a bunch of demons above us. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

But instead, Rain went ahead and lowered his scythe, piercing through the ground cleanly and revealing a hidden path under the one we were taking. The path was much wider, and not only that, it forked off to the left.

"New path, everyone. It’ll get a bit stuffy down there, so make sure you move faster, yeah?"
