Transmigrated as The Forgotten Extra-Chapter 119 Scout Mission.
Sitting behind the desk was a man in his mid-forties. Instead of a full armor suit, the man wore only a transparent mask that revealed the chiseled, ferocious contours of his face.
His brown hair flared out like a lion’s mane, and he possessed a pair of sharp red eyes that glared directly at Cain, who happened to be standing between the seniors.
Cain glanced down, noting the Commander’s massive build. Beneath a single layer of dark green fabric, he could see thick muscles forged in combat; the jagged scar on his neck was living proof that the man had once cheated death itself.
The boy swallowed to moisten his dry throat. Feeling uncomfortable staring at his superior, he shifted his focus forward, only to lock eyes with the Commander again.
His hands clenched into tight fists, but contrary to his expectations, the man simply stared at him before leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk.
"So, let’s get this straight... which one of you is Cain?"
His voice was quiet, but Cain felt a chill slowly crawl down his spine.
From the side, Cain could have sworn he heard a mocking snort from the crimson-haired senior, but he didn’t have time to deal with it. Cain took a deep breath and, in front of everyone, stepped forward.
"That would be me."
Silence reigned over the room. Even the sound of keyboard typing faded in Cain’s ears as he stood face-to-face with the Commander.
A moment later, Cain’s ears perked up as if he heard something crack. He choked on his breath as a heavy pressure slammed down on him.
The grey-haired boy instantly held his breath. His legs trembled, on the verge of buckling under the weight of a powerful will.
However, Cain bit his lip until blood streamed down his chin; the sharp pain stabbing at his nerves awakened his body’s defense systems, starting with a loud thumping in his chest.
The sound echoed in his ears, and a warm sensation began to spread through his veins, strengthening his nearly collapsing body.
But it only lasted a few seconds before the pressure he felt intensified several times over. The boy gritted his teeth and shifted his feet, widening his stance into a combat posture to stabilize himself.
Under the crushing weight, Cain lifted his head, which felt as heavy as if it were tethered to the earth. Cold sweat began to drench his back, yet he managed to glare at the Commander, who, for some reason, was grinning at his struggle.
That grin instantly ignited Cain’s deepest rage.
’You b*stard!’
Cain cursed the man. He was on the verge of releasing his lightning attribute power; his vision flickered like a lantern in the darkness, and he felt as if his body were floating.
"Cain."
The worried voice of Senior Luna snapped him out of his daze. Cain’s eyes widened as he realized his body was slowly tilting.
Though he felt himself falling, his instincts firmly refused—a jolt of adrenaline pumped through his body, granting him a temporary surge of strength.
Cain stomped the floor hard, creating a small web of cracks. He exhaled the breath he had been holding and shot a glare at the smirking man before him.
"Huff... haa... Care to explain?"
The blunt words tumbled from his trembling lips. The atmosphere in the room froze instantly, and those who admired the Commander glared at the boy in shock.
Cain panted; each breath he took was labor. He took a deep breath, still hearing the loud thumping of his heart, and asked.
"...Sir?"
Time passed in silence before the Commander spread his lips, baring his fangs.
"Heh. No wonder Dosh likes you so much, kid."
The ominous, suffocating aura vanished, replaced by the relaxed demeanor of an ordinary middle-aged man. The Commander sighed and leaned back in his chair. Cain’s mouth hung open, unsure of how to respond.
Initially, he had been called in, assuming he would be punished. With the seniors present, he thought they were being asked to follow the protocol for facing high-ranking military officials.
But looking at the Commander’s attitude, that wasn’t the issue. Why did he ask specifically for Cain and go so far as to intimidate him? Was it just curiosity?
Regardless, Cain buried this grudge deep in his heart, vowing to repay it once his abilities were sufficient.
’That’s right... eventually, I’m going to hit him until his teeth fall out.’
Jokes aside, today Cain felt a clear gap between his own strength and that of a true "superpower."
Although he had encountered an Intelligence-rank virus beast before, at that time, his ears were busted, and he couldn’t grasp the enemy’s yapping.
Now it was different; that heavy sensation, which could have crushed his internal organs in an instant, gave him a vivid picture of the world. And in that vast world, Cain was nothing more than a pebble at the foot of a mountain. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
The journey to the peak was still long.
Cain loosened the tension in his body and sighed. He straightened his posture and looked at the Commander.
"So, why were we called here?"
Since the two seniors behind him remained silent, Cain asked the question. The man grabbed a terminal from his desk and tossed it.
"Here. Read it."
Cain’s eyes widened; his body moved by reflex as he snatched the device in mid-air. He looked back at the Commander.
"Turn it on!"
Following the order, Cain pressed the power button. The black screen brightened, and his eyes met a collection of data and images from various sites.
Cain swiped through the data, seeing people in armor suits working underground. Some carried shovels, pickaxes, and excavation tools.
’Looking at that dark cave structure, it’s clearly just natural rock formations. No signs of metal ore or ruins... So why?’
The grey-haired boy shifted his attention to the man. "What project is this?"
The Commander didn’t answer, simply making a sweeping gesture with his finger. Cain clicked his tongue and began reading the information on the screen. His eyes swept through every word and image until the answer finally emerged.
"I see."
"What is it, Cain?"
Luna’s soft voice echoed beside him. She leaned her shoulder against him, peeking at the terminal. Cain cleared his throat and answered.
"It’s a search for a water source."
"Exactly," the Commander said. He had stood up from his chair and walked around the desk to stand before Cain. "That is why I called you here."
Cain looked at the terminal one last time before looking up. "So this is about a mission?"
"More specifically, a Scout Mission. I am assigning the three of you and your groups to scout the surrounding area and, if possible, protect the workers struggling there."
The man took the tablet back from Cain’s hand. He swiped the display and showed Cain a marked area on a digital map.
Cain frowned, lost in thought. From what he gathered, this scouting mission was to ensure the workers’ safety. Reports showed no movement from large monsters, only common-rank virus beasts that Cain and his team could easily handle.
This mission was also an opportunity for the Commander to pull back his soldiers currently on the site and redeploy them to the battlefield.
’He’s a shrewd man.’
Cain shook his head, getting rid of the unnecessary thoughts. He took a short breath and looked up.
"When do we start?"
A smirk played on the Commander’s lips. "Tomorrow."
The sudden news made Cain’s body flinch. He took a deep breath, trying to relax his fists, which were itching to punch the man’s face.
’I’ll remember this for sure.’
