Transmigrated as The Forgotten Extra-Chapter 123 Situation on the Battlefield
Some time before Cain and his companions arrived at the excavation site. Chaos was already unfolding at one of the long-stretching fortresses made of concrete and steel, standing between two towering hills.
It was a wall that defended the monster from reaching out to the people at the construction site. And of all the fortresses built by humans, this place was currently the worst, not because of its fragility, but because of the never-ending war.
Countless people stood atop the hills, wielding rifles or bows, raining fire upon a battlefield that showed no sign of calming down.
Humans clashed relentlessly with machines devoid of consciousness, creating a symphony of death, its trumpet of terror eroding the sanity of everyone present.
The virus beasts continued their assault on the defensive perimeter, showing no signs of stopping.
"Fall back! Fall back!"
A soldier swinging his sword on the front line shouted. His loud voice only made him an easy target for the metal monsters around him.
But from atop the hill, ’bang!’ a volley of gunfire rang out. The bullets struck true, piercing the red cores of the virus beasts that were about to end the man’s life.
"Those who are exhausted, retreat! Those who have rested, hurry and reinforce the front line!"
A man standing tall atop the fortress raised his hand as he shouted orders to the troops behind him.
"As you command!"
At his command, the soldiers waiting behind the fortress immediately tightened their grips on their weapons.
Though their voices were loud, they couldn’t entirely hide the exhaustion gnawing at their minds; it was evident from their slightly hunched postures.
Yet these soldiers were not the kind to crumble easily under mental pressure. Even after days without proper sleep, they were still able to fight on the front lines.
As Awakened humans whose potential mutation had been unlocked, they could evolve beyond normal human limits when subjected to extreme pressure, both physical and mental.
And war was one of the shortest catalysts for such growth.
The gates of the fortress rumbled. The several-meter-thick iron doors slid open, clearing a path for fresh troops to enter the battlefield and replace their brothers who had been fighting for hours on end.
"Give them hell!" the man atop the fortress shouted.
The battle to defend this construction site had lasted for months. Yet recently, the virus beasts’ attacks never ceased, forcing the soldiers to fight in carefully timed rotations.
Fortunately, the virus beasts attacking were all estimated to be Common-rank, allowing the soldiers to manage the situation, even while fighting off drowsiness.
The moment the gates opened, the soldiers sprinted forward without breaking formation. Instead of charging blindly, they spread out, forming an arrow-shaped formation that curved outward to both sides.
Then, the final line advanced as the third arrow, crashing into the center of the battlefield while shielding their exhausted comrades.
"Retreat!"
The single, thunderous command reverberated across the battlefield, issued by a man who had endured eight grueling hours on the front lines.
The exhausted soldiers grit their teeth, forcing their heavy legs to move as they withdrew toward the fortress.
At the same time, covering fire poured in from above, explosions and whistling arrows rained down, cutting down virus beasts that attempted to pursue the retreating troops.
Moments later, the soldiers made it through the gates, followed by a deafening ’boom’ that shook their eardrums. The iron gates then slammed shut with a loud hiss.’
The soldiers who had rushed inside collapsed to the ground, chests heaving violently, too exhausted to even run a few dozen meters toward the tent. It was a testament to the brutality of the battlefield.
"Rest. You’ve done well. Medical team, take the fallen!"
The man atop the fortress gave another command. Several personnel rushed forward, guiding and carrying the collapsed soldiers toward the prepared tents.
Once he confirmed no one was left lying on the ground, the man turned his attention back to the battlefield ahead.
The crunch of shattered metal and explosions carrying the faint scent of gunpowder filled his nose, his expression tightening with concern.
Behind his visor, brown eyes stared into the distance, at a sea of metal bodies with glowing red eyes, sending a chill down his spine.
’Damn monsters.’
This was the longest war he had ever faced.
Jake, also known as the right hand of the Supreme Commander, had fought in many wars before, but none as brutal as this.
The longest battle he’d endured in his youth lasted only a few days, and even then, he had fought alongside the Supreme Commander, General Dosh, and several other powerful figures.
But this time was different. Now, he had to lead soldiers who were mostly fresh graduates from training facilities.
Fortunately, the heavens still seemed to favor humanity. Despite the war lasting nearly a month, there were no signs that the enemy had deployed their true heavy forces.
As a result, damage and casualties on the human side remained minimal.
But what if they were waiting for humans to lower their guard?
And when that moment came, would the virus beasts unleash their real army?
Just imagining it made Jake’s hair stand on end.
He turned back to the battlefield, watching his comrades struggle to hold back the invasion. His fists clenched tightly as he murmured inwardly:
’Hold on. Reinforcements will arrive soon. Until that day comes, fight on, my fellow brothers.’
The sounds of battle and the stench of rotten flesh from black fluids splattered across the battlefield pulled Jake’s focus back.
The tactic he employed was undeniably dangerous, as it allowed soldiers to fight directly on the front lines.
But they had no choice. Their ammunition wasn’t infinite.
Worse still, metal resources were dwindling by the day, forcing soldiers to fight like warriors of old, relying on combat techniques, tactics, swords, and shields, and unwavering morale.
As Jake observed the battlefield, his eyes caught a soldier on the front line fighting like a man possessed.
Spinning his spear, the soldier advanced fearlessly. His rapid movements blurred his limbs, and every thrust he delivered sent a virus beast crashing down.
His sharp, precise footwork darted seamlessly across the battlefield, as if he owned it, turning the warzone into his personal playground.
His performance boosted morale across the field. The soldiers’ movements became faster, more decisive, and the number of enemies visibly decreased. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
’His spear technique is fierce as usual? Good job, Wi...’
Just as Jake was about to say the man’s name, a distant hum made his ears twitch. He glanced toward the source and looked up at the ominous black clouds overhead.
From afar, he saw a brief flash of orange light. It was so fleeting that it made his eyes narrow.
Jake tried to focus on it, then a tingling sensation jolted his consciousness. The black clouds were moving closer.
Seeing this, Jake grabbed the greatsword resting beside him. He inhaled deeply, then let out a thunderous roar that echoed across the battlefield.
"Advance-Rank virus beasts incoming! Brace yourselves!"
Before the monsters even touched the ground, Jake raised his smartwatch and sent a voice email to the Supreme Commander.
"Detected, hundreds of Advance-rank virus beasts approaching. Request immediate assistance!"
Once he confirmed the message had been sent, Jake leapt off the fortress without hesitation. The greatsword in his hand gleamed silver, sharp and also lethal.
His body floated briefly in midair before he spun, then kicked off the fortress wall with a booming shockwave that launched him forward like a fired bullet.
With his greatsword ready, Jake slammed it downward, unleashing a shockwave that sent virus beasts flying several meters away.
"The General has joined the battle!"
"Hell yeah!"
"We can win this!"
The soldiers’ cheers were met with a grim expression from Jake as he stared at the approaching high-ranking monsters.
"They’re getting closer," Jake muttered as he sliced through an advancing virus beast. "Have you finally lost your patience, monsters?"
Usually, whenever Advance-rank virus beasts moved in large numbers, it meant one thing: a higher-ranked virus beast was commanding them.
That realization carried two possibilities. The first: defeating that commander could finally end this endless war, bringing peace to the workers constructing the settlement behind them.
The second and worst possibility: this was merely the opening move before the virus beasts unleashed an overwhelming force to push humanity to the brink of annihilation.
Jake shuddered at the thought.
Stepping forward, he cleaved several virus beasts in a single swing, black blood spraying as his expression hardened.
"General?"
He glanced sideways to see the spear-wielding man staring at the distant clouds.
"Could it be, they are?"
"Yes."
At Jake’s confirmation, the spearman frowned, tightening his grip on the shaft.
"Don’t waver. I’ll handle the Advance-ranks. You focus on leading the others and wipe out these small fries!"
"Understood!"
The spear user turned and resumed slaughtering the virus beasts.
Hearing his words, Jake let out a short breath, feeling honored by the trust placed in him. His lips curved upward as he turned back toward the rapidly approaching black clouds.
The general on the battlefield trembled as he saw massive virus beasts with elongated bodies and a pair of orange scythes for arms.
Jake took his stance, gripping his greatsword as tension crushed his chest.
"Come, you amalgam beasts!"
