"Interesting..."

Perhaps, the putrid smell that all humans emitted wasn't so bad after all.
Even in this gigantic forest, where thousands of animals and different life forms existed, I could still distinctly identify the disgusting scent of a human.
So, I was practically immune to any sneak attacks from humans.
Turning my head in the direction of the smell, I crouched down and remained on a branch, hiding in the darkness of the tree's leaves above me.
The location of the herbs hadn't been hard to find, as the book mentioned they only grew in the darker parts of the forest, so I went farther and farther into the trees until I finally saw one.
Pulling the cloak over my face and concealing my eyes, I silently climbed up the tree I was on until the sun finally came into view.
Looking up, I could see the light-blue sky and yellow sun, and looking down, I could see the massive forest that seemed to stretch on for miles.
Like a bird waiting to catch their prey, I perched atop the tree, enjoying the occasional breeze that brushed against my cloak.
To get the herbs inside the forest, the protagonist and the doctor would have to leave their carriage behind on the plain as there was no way it would fit within the densely packed trees.
Seeing this, Kratos would immediately attempt to find and lure a troll to the protagonist's unguarded carriage, leaving a trap for them.
That was when I was planning to attack.
Right when Kratos was at his weakest, having exhausted most of his energy luring the troll all the way to the carriage.
As for the troll, she could take care of that.
Crouching atop the highest point of the tree, I sighed and looked around while spinning the pen in my right hand.
What was after this?
The academy?
I had to train there, of course, to get stronger, right?
But, why did I have to get stronger?
To survive?
Wasn't I going to die in ten years anyway? Why did I have to get stronger then?
Everything seemed so pointless and bland when faced with the fact of my eventual death.
I just wanted to live.
Sighing, I shook my head.
The world was cruel and unforgiving.
And fate was impossible to defy...unless.
Didn't I say it myself?
The world...it was living and adapting to the plotline of the book that I had read.
Not everything that happened in this world was written in the book.
So...what if the world adapted the point where my death was no longer necessary?
What if I forced the world to create a new plot line that didn't require my death?
Or what if a substitute was made to replace me...could there be two demon kings?
Not getting ahead of myself, I refocused my mind and closed my eyes, waiting for one horrid smell and one sweet smell to enter my nose.
After who knows how long, I finally felt an unknown scent enter my nose.
It was tangy...like the flavor of barbecue chips.
However, it was neither of the odors I was looking for.
Though...I could still guess what it belonged to.
The crazy berserker had made his move, which could only mean one thing.
The doctor and the protagonist were about to enter the forest and leave their carriage.
Not skipping a beat, I used my skill, instantly spawning five clones around me.
Each of them was perched on the very top of a tree, crouching down and mimicking my posture to the tee.
In unison, my five clones and I instantly moved, silently jumping from tree top to tree top while following the tangy smell.
My plan was quite simple.
As an awakened without enlightenment or the ability to use mana protection, I had no use for my mana.
Except for, of course, my skill.
And, in the description of my cloning skill, there were no mentions of any cool-downs or limits of clones that I could have active at once.
As I reached the edge of the forest, I confusedly glanced around as no new smells entered my nose.
Was the scent of the troll overpowering all the other odors in the area?
Reaching the last tree and seeing the massive plain laid ahead of me, I internally commanded the clones behind to halt before peering downward.
And, there lay a carriage, resting on the outskirts of the massive plain that separated Ezria and the forest.
A carriage...with a massive boiling pot of stew next to it.
The pot, containing carrots, beef, chicken, and other various vegetables, leaked off a familiar tangy smell.
It looked hastily set-up and practically inedible due to its odd purple color.
The boiling pot hadn't been set up for eating purposes.
"..."
My guess had been wrong.
The troll hadn't been the source of the savory smell...perhaps, I couldn't even smell demons and magical beasts at all.
At that moment, my body suddenly froze as a loud scream echoed from within the forest behind me.
"AHHH!"
What had changed?
My mind instantly began to spin, trying to comprehend why the battle was now taking place within the forest instead of near the carriage.
The crazy beseker, Kratos, had somehow noticed my presence.
Not wasting anymore time, I turned around and sprinted back into the forest, my clones following after.
However, before I could even come up with a plan, I felt the air around me suddenly shift.
Then, as I glanced forward, I saw a blood-red magical slash, double the size of a normal one, barreling right at me.
Without any hesitation, I dove off the tree I was standing on, but behind me, the slash whizzed past and hit two of my clones, instantly reducing them to ash.
Rapidly descending downward, I compressed my body and held my knees as close as possible to my chest to avoid the tens of branches under.
However, it wasn't enough.
A second later, an intense pain coursed through my head as it collided with a wood branch, instantly disorienting me.
