Chapter 19: Chapter 19: No Rules, No Karen Ford

"Don’t talk about bugs while we’re eating. You’re so annoying, Xiaonan."

Jim Thorne gave her little pigtail another tug. He wasn’t too bothered by it; he’d just been grossed out for a moment. His teacher had told them to wash their hands before meals countless times, but how many people in the countryside actually did it? Everyone seemed perfectly healthy, and he’d never seen anyone get eaten by bugs.

Tang Xiaonan shot him a glare and turned her head away, too lazy to lecture him anymore. Habits weren’t formed overnight, and they certainly couldn’t be corrected in a single day.

She made her family wash their hands before every meal. Over time, it would naturally become a habit.

The members of the Thorne family may have looked stout and strong, but their health wasn’t actually that great. They rarely got sick, but when they did, they were bedridden for long stretches. That was true for Felix Thorne, and it was true for Phoebe Huxley. She had to plan ahead.

’Good health starts with washing your hands before meals.’

Then there was the matter of her three brothers’ terrible reputation in the village. They were seen as bullies everyone feared on sight. In truth, the three of them had never done anything truly depraved, but their fierce looks, combined with their lack of manners and respect for their elders and the young, had slowly destroyed their reputation.

These impressions shouldn’t be underestimated. In the book, after Jim Thorne got into trouble, the police came to the village to investigate. Everyone they asked just shook their heads, saying Jim had been a scoundrel and a hooligan since he was a kid. It was the final straw that broke the Thorne family.

After returning from the Hawthorne family’s home, Tang Xiaonan worked out a preliminary plan for the future while she was supposed to be napping.

’First, I have to get on the good side of the future big shot. I’ll start by feeding him.’

’Second, my three brothers need to be taught some discipline. I have to make them reform.’

’And I have to lose weight. I’m going to prove the author wrong. To hell with being the chubby, plain girl!’

Unfortunately, she had always been a speed reader, just skimming for the gist of the plot, so she’d forgotten many of the details. And for some reason, after transmigrating, her memory of the book had grown even fuzzier.

Tang Xiaonan jotted down the plot points she could still recall on a piece of paper and hid it carefully. From now on, she’d write down anything she remembered.

She never thought about returning to her original world. Here, she had parents and brothers who adored her. She couldn’t bear to leave them. Therefore, she was determined to change the Thorne family’s tragic fate.

As for the male and female protagonists of the novel, Tang Xiaonan had no plans to go out of her way to curry favor with them. The pair didn’t seem to have much to do with the Thorne family’s misfortune—at least, she hadn’t noticed a connection when she read the book. They didn’t seem to have much to do with Adrian Hawthorne, either. (It should be noted that Tang Xiaonan wasn’t a very careful reader.)

Neither the Thorne family nor Adrian Hawthorne actually appeared much in the book, and they were all written off early on. After the Thornes fell from grace, Adrian Hawthorne had some kind of breakdown not long after and insisted on running off to Umbara to expand his business. And then... there was no ’and then.’

His whereabouts became unknown, and no one knew if he was dead or alive. When he still hadn’t returned after a few years, it was assumed he was truly dead.

With his greatest threat gone, the male protagonist thrived, advancing as if he had cheat codes enabled, and eventually became the head of a business empire. Adrian Hawthorne was a thing of the past.

Tang Xiaonan couldn’t remember the exact date of Adrian Hawthorne’s disappearance, but she recalled it was fourteen years in the future. She’d written all of this down in her little notebook.

After he finished teasing his sister, Jim Thorne reached for a slice of meat with his chopsticks. Tang Xiaonan saw him out of the corner of her eye and slapped his hand again, feeling a bit weary.

’No wonder people don’t like my brothers,’ she thought. ’They just have no manners at all.’

"What now?" Jim Thorne roared, furious. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

She had interrupted him from eating his favorite meat over and over again. If it had been anyone else, Jim Thorne would have thrown them out long ago.

Tang Xiaonan flinched and pulled her head back, turning to look at Felix Thorne. Her big eyes blinked, and they immediately turned red and misty. Felix Thorne shot a harsh glare at his son. "What are you yelling for!"
