Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Not So Magnanimous

"Force of habit," Patrick Thorne said, a little ashamed of earning his sister’s disapproval.

"Just work on it little by little!"

"Alright."

The siblings whispered to each other. Before his sister, Patrick Thorne had no temper at all and was completely obedient. Adrian Hawthorne smiled. ’That chubby girl has her hands in everything,’ he thought. ’But if the three Thorne brothers can really change for the better, they’ll probably cause less trouble in the future.’

They walked quickly and soon overtook Clayton Xavier and Jacqueline Spann. Tang Xiaonan waved to Clayton Xavier and gave him a sweet smile. ’He’s going to be a big shot in the future, too!’

Clayton Xavier returned the smile, and Jacqueline Spann felt a pang of jealousy. She had intended to let bygones be bygones and smile, but as the sour feeling washed over her, her expression hardened. She wasn’t going to force it.

Before Jacqueline Spann’s expression had hardened, Tang Xiaonan had already smiled and raised her hand toward her. She really didn’t want to get on the wrong side of a future powerhouse, but she hadn’t expected Jacqueline Spann to be the one to get all haughty first.

Her hand froze mid-wave, her smile faltering. Tang Xiaonan awkwardly pulled it back. ’The future powerhouse doesn’t like me. I guess I shouldn’t be so friendly, just to get the cold shoulder.’

’But this Jacqueline Spann isn’t as magnanimous as the author made her out to be. So what if Patrick Thorne said some unpleasant things? I didn’t do anything. Why is she giving me the cold shoulder?’

Hmph!

Clayton Xavier frowned again. When Tang Xiaonan and the others were a good distance away, he said, "You shouldn’t take your anger out on a child. Tang Xiaonan is only six years old."

Jacqueline Spann felt even more suffocated. ’Clayton Xavier is defending Tang Xiaonan at every turn today. He was never like this before.’

"I... I’m just angry because her brother slandered my mom and said all those nasty things. It hurts," Jacqueline Spann said, her eyes turning red as she looked utterly aggrieved.

Clayton Xavier’s heart softened a little, but he still said, "That was Patrick Thorne. It has nothing to do with Tang Xiaonan. We have to be able to tell right from wrong."

"I know. I’ll be more careful in the future."

Jacqueline Spann reluctantly agreed. She didn’t want to fight with Clayton Xavier over Tang Xiaonan. She genuinely liked Clayton Xavier, which was why she had lost her composure when she saw how differently he treated Tang Xiaonan.

They both fell silent, but the atmosphere felt a little off. The thorn in Clayton Xavier’s heart grew larger. He had started to doubt Phoenix Golding’s character, and even the perfect image he had of Jacqueline Spann was beginning to crack. Even though it was just a tiny suspicion, he was a meticulous person. Once a doubt was planted, he had to get to the bottom of it, or else it would gnaw at him.

"Clayton, after we buy the books, let’s go ask about postcards. That’s a surefire way to make money. If we can find out the supply channels, we can start earning!" Jacqueline Spann said excitedly.

Clayton Xavier, however, wasn’t very enthusiastic. All he wanted to do now was go home and ask his mother why she disliked Phoenix Golding. ’My mother is kind and sincere; she would never hate someone for no reason.’

"Let’s ask about it next time. My mother told me to be home early today."

"It won’t take much time, and who knows when we’ll get to come into the city again. Clayton, come with me and ask, please? Pretty please?" Jacqueline Spann’s voice softened.

Clayton Xavier hesitated for a moment before relenting with a nod. "We have to be back before sunset. It’s not safe to walk on the mountain at night."

Jacqueline Spann’s mood brightened instantly. She was full of confidence. ’If other people can make money selling postcards, then so can I.’

It was as if she could see countless bills waving to her, beckoning her toward a splendid future. ’Once I have money, I can keep going to school. And with Old Master Tate teaching me, I’ll definitely get into Aethelgard University!’
