Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Galahad Oz Eradre

With a mysterious calm, the Herald opened one of his books, flipping through the pages until he found an illustration. He looked at Mitsuki without losing his friendly smile.

"But I can understand it. After all, people fear the unknown; it’s happened to me many times as well. It’s always terrifying not knowing where you’re going or what awaits you, especially when you don’t even know why you’re in this world." His crimson eyes seemed to glow beneath his hood, sending a chill down Mitsuki’s spine.

With his index finger, he pointed at the page of the book. There lay the illustration of an ancient black-scaled dragon. Its large membranous wings and powerful muscles, along with its massive drum-shaped jaw filled with teeth, would instill fear in anyone who saw such a beast flying over a city.

"When I was a child, I feared this species of dragon. Its enormous mouth gave me nightmares, but I learned to overcome it when I encountered the very same type of dragon. It turns out dragons are actually lazy beings that sleep most of their lives, especially the Drum-Maw. They’re also intelligent creatures that speak the common tongue and possess great ancient magic. They’re incredible, don’t you think?"

Mitsuki sighed, exhausted. ’Is this guy just going to keep talking? I seriously want to leave already...’ He didn’t even know why he kept listening to this person. Though, truth be told, he couldn’t find the chance to get the hell out without seeming rude.

His nonexistent social skills were working against him again. I mean, how are you supposed to leave a place when you’ve been stuck in one spot for almost a decade? Mitsuki was facing that exact dilemma.

"Oh, I just realized I didn’t introduce myself. My apologies. Let me start again," the man said, standing up with his fist against his chest. In that position, he bowed like a knight clad in armor.

Mitsuki reacted by shrinking his shoulders uncomfortably, as the man was quite tall. Then, the Herald spoke:

"My name is Galahad Oz Eradre. I was born in the Village of Earth Springs in the land of Skyland, so you could say I’m quite the man of the countryside. Though I also enjoy traveling by sea, so I’m a man of the ocean as well." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Mitsuki looked at Galahad’s feet, thinking.

’Skyland? That doesn’t ring a bell. This world is way too big, and I’ve barely covered the surroundings of Lamus and Nemoria in the few books I’ve read so far...’ He shook his head, remembering he wanted to leave. Then, he replied hesitantly. "I... I’m Mitsuki."

And that was it. That surprised Galahad, who almost laughed at the dry introduction of the boy, who hadn’t even stood up from his seat to introduce himself. If Mitsuki was trying not to seem rude, he had completely failed.

Holding back his laughter, he sat down again.

"Nice to meet you, Mitsuki. Judging by your name, you’re probably from some eastern land. There are many people with similar names there, as well as features like yours," he said, closing the book and opening a new one. He flipped through the pages until he found another illustration.

Then, just like before, he pointed at the page. There was a tree full of beautiful flowers with no specific color, since the book was printed in black ink.

"The cherry blossom trees of the eastern lands are the most beautiful in the world. I once had the fortune of passing through there. The people were very kind, the food was delicious, and the scenery was breathtaking."

Galahad looked out the window with longing, as if the memory was too nostalgic not to bring a faint smile to his face.

"On top of that, I came across the remnants of many ancient battles: single-edged swords embedded among the ruins of mountains, skeletons of immense beasts decorating entire valleys, atmospheric phenomena tied to magic sealed for hundreds of years... Truly, the world is a vast treasure chest."

’This guy... talks too much,’ Mitsuki thought. His patience had run out. ’And he’s an expert at changing topics way too fast. It’s everything I hate in a person I don’t know.’

Finally, he stood up to leave, as he couldn’t stand being around this stranger any longer. Even if he came off as someone with no manners, he wasn’t going to give in. Besides, wasn’t Galahad the one who interrupted his reading in the first place? He’s the one with no manners!

’Anyway, I’m leaving.’ He gathered all his books and said, "I’m sorry, but I have to go."

"Oh... really?" Galahad said, a bit disappointed. "I see. I understand. See you."

Mitsuki didn’t look at him and simply left, but the Herald said one last thing.

"If you ever need help, Mitsuki, don’t hesitate to look for me. I offer my strength to anyone who needs it, without exception. Have a good day, and good luck."

After that, Mitsuki paid to rent the books he had picked earlier and prepared to leave, but he felt a strange gaze on him. Just before stepping through the door, he looked toward the stairs between the shelves. There was Galahad, giving him a brief wave.

’If being creepy were a power, that guy would have the ultimate ability.’ He turned his attention back to the door and finally stepped outside. ’I also can’t understand how there are people with enough confidence to approach someone they don’t even know. It’s even worse when they’re wearing a robe that could easily pass as the uniform of some weird cult.’

Well, that robe already was the uniform of a weird cult. Mitsuki shook his head, tired just thinking about it.

’Even so, I did learn a few things about other parts of the world thanks to that guy, so it wasn’t all bad. What will be bad is what happens when I get back to the inn,’ he thought, storing the books in his Spatial Storage. ’I have to study with Ellegaard, but I also need to train with Jeanne; my arms still hurt a bit from practicing with the sword.’

With so many things on his mind, it was hard to decide.

’I’d better start getting ready...’
