Transmigrating from a zombie world to become the mecha kings wife-Chapter 413: A buffet of souls
Chapter 413: A buffet of souls
It had been five days since she returned home, and the hunt for the trinket the deity of misfortune dropped on Nordem continued, fruitlessly.
Scarlet had been excited to visit a new world but the novelty had worn off now.
She and Severus had left the first city, having exhausted every tavern and shady bar they could find. She also used her energy and found nothing.
They had come to a new city, one that was a bit more visually appealing that the first one in which she had landed. The buildings here were at least standing.
But given the warring state of this world, cities were highly guarded by very mean guards who demanded for money for refugees to enter.
Scarlet did not have to pay that fee, she and Severus simply waltzed through the gates manning the large city as if they owned it.
"Do you know something Severus," she said.
"What?" he asked her.
"I think there is something about me that always makes me end up in crappy places. We could have come here first but we landed in a shit hole.
It’s just like the original Blue star, I could have ended up in the capital but I landed there."
She had a theory that maybe it was because she was reaped from an apocalyptic world.
A moving-no racing cloud of black smoke passed by Scarlet, smelling heavily of Sulphur and a rotten stench.
"Evil soul." she said with disdain.
As soon as it passed by, warrior reapers that were teleporting like flashing lights went by as well, chasing after it.
"Don’t even think about it." Severus told her.
He did not need to wait around and hear about an errant thought which convinced her to follow after the warrior reapers who were hunting for the evil soul.
"How many of them have we seen so far?" she asked Severus.
"This makes it twenty, this week alone. I am beginning to feel for the warrior reapers, they have to work their asses off while we simply travel from one bar to another." Severus then tsked and shook his head.
Scarlet eyed Severus with surprise, since when did he pity warrior reapers.
She opened her soul gourd and her hands lit up with a green flame.
"Okay, let it reap." she told him.
Severus already knew the routine, she opened her soul gourd, he roared, and the souls which were unaware and those which were tempted to stay around walked into the soul gourd without giving them trouble.
She teleported to the top of the wall and got her golden soul binding rope as well.
In this place alone, she could easily count a hundred or so confused souls that were stuck. In their midst was a soul eater with a long tongue devouring them as if he had been invited to an all you can eat buffet.
It was so greedy that not even Severus’s roar got it to move.
"Now that is one arrogant idiot." Scarlet laughed.
"I told you, soul eaters lose their minds when it comes to devouring souls. They will risk everything to eat a soul, no matter how dangerous the situation is for them." Severus reminded her.
"We might as well interfere with it’s meal." she said.
She cracked her knuckles, and teleported, directly landing in front of the soul eater.
"Hi," she said with a cheerful smile.
She grabbed it with her hand, pouring her green flame out and refining it immediately.
"Not to worry everyone, just keep going towards the light, this is none of your business, well maybe it is since he intended to eat you.."
Severus scratched his ears and complained in utter exhaustion. "Good lord woman do you have to be so chipper when doing this job? You always babble on unnecessarily."
As she dusted her hands off, she replied sluggishly to his complaint, "Do you know how boring the after life is? I talk because there might be a strong soul here attracted by my chatter and approach me out of curiosity.
I can then sell...err...I mean hand that strong soul to the old deity and get many rewards."
It had been quiet when she died, no one had spoken to her when she was cutting through that line. It had been a very lonely couple of days, weeks, months or years.
She was not sure about the time period, time moved differently when one died. There was no day or night, no cold or warmth, definitely no bright colors until you got to the front of the line. It was tragic, unfortunately tragic.
"We are done with clean up in this zone, let’s keep moving." he told her.
She closed the soul gourd for now, with the knowledge that it would be opened up again soon. She could smell death all around in the air, it occupied this city like a small king.
Four warrior reapers out of nowhere teleported and appeared in front of them.
Scarlet raised her eyebrows curiously, was this going to be the beginning of an altercation?
They were three male and one female, all dressed similarly with hoods over their heads.
"You are the hound that howled a while back, right?" the woman asked.
"I did." Severus answered proudly.
To Scarlet it sort of sounded like he was being provocative, like ’I did, so what?’
"Thank you." she said.
That definitely took Scarlet and Severus by surprise. When did warrior reapers start thanking guardians?
"Uhm, you are welcome." Scarlet responded unsurely.
The four sniffed the air, smelling something rotten at the same time as Scarlet did, another evil soul. They really were like flies in this world, you just couldn’t get rid of them.
You captured one and another took it’s place immediately.
The woman nodded at Scarlet and said, "We have to go now but I don’t like owing anyone. I heard that you guys are looking for something lost by the deity of strife.
Small tip, look for someone who is having unbelievable luck than others all of a sudden or a place where the most misery, death, brutality and hatred is concentrated.
Odds are, what you are looking for is in one of those two places." frёewebnoѵēl.com
I knew that, Scarlet thought, some of it anyway.
"Thank you." she replied.
The four warrior reapers vanished, and Scarlet noticed ten new souls in the same place she had just cleared of all souls.
"Okay, seriously, really guys!!!" she yelled, her eyes looking down at the ground.
Severus looked at the souls sadly, he knew that not all who had died would be saved.
"Let it be, we are not here for the task of cleansing this world of it’s dead souls, we are here for the trinket and then we go home. You can’t collect them all, that’s the job of the reaper of this world."
Scarlet could not bare to leave them up and she collect them, even though she knew that more would pop up after she left.
"We really need more reapers, this is a nightmare. What in the world are the deities thinking? Do they not see this situation?" she asked.
"It’s a condemned world, no one is coming to save it." Severus replied to her.
They both moved on without turning back, knowing that more dead souls were already showing up but they could do nothing.
