Their arrival was noticed by all the gods. It was hard not to when they were the VIPs of the day, the two who were responsible for the gathering.

Scarlet’s bold remarks and her nonchalant attitude captivated the interest of the deities. What is it that was giving her confidence to stand before them and challenge one of the strongest deities so openly? Was she simply foolish or did she think this matter was laughable?

"You are quite fearless for a reaper, are you not?" One of the female deities asked.

"You stand before the council of deities, perhaps you should tone down the attitude and humble yourself. We are here to decide the fate of your children after all." Another, a female deity advised.

"If you expect the little reaper to bend to the will of us deities then you will be disappointed." Tridon told them. He looked amused, with that playful smile on his face. "I for one would be very bored if she simply surrendered cowardly."

"You are the head of the council Tridon but you seem to have an interest in the female, aren’t you going to be biased?" One of the gods asked.

Tridon shrugged and replied, "We are here to deal with matters concerning her children, not her. My interest in her isn’t related to the issues at hand."

"Speaking of children, we are yet to see the little ones that have brought us all from our reams. Shouldn’t we at least get a look at that which has torn through alliances and brought war on the steps of the human world?" Chaos asked.

"There is no war on the steps of human world." Apo said dully.

"Right, all those life angels on her world are out there to do charity." The god of deceit chuckled.

"Aren’t they there to snatch her human family and hold them hostage?" The god of wine asked. He slurred over his words, clearly drunk already.

The god of life who had not taken his eyes off Scarlet said, "That would be useless seeing as to how she hid them away already and replaced them with phantoms."

"Aah, so you did try to snatch them." The god of deceit laughed. "And they call me unethical."

"The humans will be left out of this." A new voice was added to the mix as a different deity teleported in. He walked over to the side on which the deities that were standing on the side of the underworld were and he sat down.

"Apheitos, brother." The old deity raised and raised his arms with a joyous smile. "It’s good of you to come and even better now that you have made your allegiance known."

Apheitos waved at Scarlet and she waved back at him. As he waved he said, "Save the sweet talk death, I am not here for you. I am here for Scarlet."

The heads of most of the deities moved in the same order, from Apheitos to Scarlet. Apheitos was one of the rare deities, not often seen because he was always busy. It was usually hard to pin him down because he never stayed on one world for too long. However, he seemed to know the female reaper. He didn’t just know her casually but they were friendly too.

They were not the only ones who were curious, Scarlet’s husband was just the same. In this case, it was Nyx that was standing by her side. Esong had taken the back seat because Nyx was the expert on deities. "Exactly how much time did you spend with that guy?"

"A lot, we spent days and nights together. He taught me things no man has ever taught me before. Why are you jealous?" Scarlet replied sarcastically and she smiled dryly and Nyx.

She didn’t whisper so her response was relayed by the wind being controlled by the deity of messages back to the deities.

"How could you?" he gasped.

"Oh relax, don’t you hear the sarcasm in her voice?" Wisdom responded. "Besides, why are you acting far more betrayed than her husband? Is this a case of the concubine grieving the death of the husband a lot more than the legal wife?"

Tridon huffed and pointed at Wisdom. "Who are you calling the concubine here? Do I look like concubine material to your eyes? Which part of me is not qualified to be a legal wife?"

"You guys are ridiculous. This is the council of gods for crying out loud can you not argue about who deserves to be a concubine and who deserves to be a legal wife?" Carnelia said in an exhausted voice.

For a while there, she seemed to be serious until she added, "Only Nyx can be the legal wife at the end of the day. A promiscuous thing like you Tridon cannot even be a concubine. Think about it, are you really qualified?"

The god of wine laughed loudly and a few others giggled. And then, to Scarlet’s utter dismay, they broke into a conversation on the legal wife and concubine issue.

"Why do they keep saying wife, don’t they see that he is male?’ Scarlet whispered to Nyx.

Nyx was not surprised by the behavior of the gods. He would not be surprised to see them suddenly decide to eat and drink at this very moment. They were unpredictable like that, incapable of being serious sometimes.

To most, this matter was light and just a way to entertain themselves. They were not personally involved in the matter after all, and they would not be affected by it’s end result.

"You should prepare yourself for a lot of ridiculousness." he said seriously.

If his voice was not serious, she would have thought that he was messing around.

"When you said that we would be pleading our case before the council, I thought we would be facing a group of mean old male and female deities that would question us and frighten us, not this comedy." she whispered to him.

She got a chair from her storage bracelet and a large standing umbrella. In addition to that, she got a table, put out some warm chicken soup and sat down. She had just given birth to five children and she was hungry.

What she wanted to do was eat and go to sleep, surrounded by her babies with the knowledge that they were safe.

But with the way this council meeting was unveiling, they would be here for quite a while. So, Scarlet figured that she might as well eat something as she waited for them to decide when they wanted to be serious.

Nyx followed suit, and he sat down besides her. He looked at her food and said sadly, "We haven’t eaten in a very long time."

She didn’t respond but handed him a warm bowl of porridge and cinnamon sticky buns.

"Ooh, sticky buns." he rubbed his hands happily, sniffed them to make sure that they were from the underworld batch. He took one small bite first and then and got down to eating voraciously.

Scarlet had seen that action many times before, the sniffing and that first tentative bite. "It was you that kept rejecting the human food." she mumbled. "I was such a fool to miss all the signs."
