Chapter 49: Chapter Forty Eight

Before Damon could respond to her strange statement, the sound of heavy boots crunching on the pebble path broke the silence.

Kade, Damon’s aide, walked up the small wooden ramp and entered the white gazebo. He was carrying a thick, dark grey wool blanket folded neatly over his arm. He had gone back to the mansion to fetch it because the morning breeze was getting slightly cooler, and the doctor had ordered the General to keep his injured leg warm.

Kade had heard Camilla’s last sentence as he approached. He heard her talking about snakes.

Kade stepped forward and politely bowed his head to the Lady.

"Do not worry, My Lady," Kade spoke out loud, wanting to reassure her. He unfolded the thick wool blanket. "This is a very well maintained estate. We have dozens of gardeners working every single day. They trim the grass and check the bushes constantly. There couldn’t possibly be a snake in these gardens."

Kade walked over to Damon’s wheelchair. He carefully draped the warm wool blanket over Damon’s lap, making sure to cover the thick white bandages on his broken left leg.

Camilla looked at Kade. She smiled at him politely, but inside, she was rolling her eyes.

"Oh, you poor thing," Camilla thought to herself. "You do not understand. I am not talking about normal nature."

Camilla turned her attention back to Damon. She nodded her head slowly, pretending to be comforted by Kade’s words.

"That is good," Camilla said softly. "I am so glad the gardeners are working hard."

But she wanted to make absolutely sure the curse stuck. She needed to repeat the magic words to focus the energy directly on the male lead. She looked at his covered leg.

"I am just worried about the General’s leg," Camilla continued out loud, putting her hand over her heart in a gesture of pure, fake devotion. "He is already injured. He cannot run away."

She locked her dark eyes onto Damon’s face.

"I hope something like that doesn’t happen to him," Camilla stated clearly, emphasizing the words. "It won’t be good at all."

She smiled at Damon. It was a sweet, caring smile on the outside, but a deadly, threatening smile on the inside.

Damon sat in his wheelchair. He felt the heavy wool blanket resting on his legs. He looked at her smiling face. He listened to her repeat the words.

"She is cursing me again," Damon thought to himself. His eyes narrowed slightly.

He understood exactly what she was trying to do. She had realized the hot tea didn’t work, so now she was trying to summon a wild animal to do her dirty work. She was trying to bring a snake into his perfectly safe garden.

Damon shifted his gaze downward. He looked at the smooth stone floor of the gazebo. He looked at the edge of the wooden ramp where the green grass met the white wood.

He waited. He wanted to see if her strange magic was actually powerful enough to summon a living creature out of thin air.

For five long seconds, the gazebo was completely silent. The only sound was the soft rustling of the leaves in the wind.

Then, they all heard it.

Rustle.

Swish.

It was a very soft, very distinct sound coming from the thick bushes directly to the right of the gazebo. It sounded like something long and heavy dragging itself through the dry leaves and the tall grass.

Kade froze. His hand immediately dropped to the handle of his steel sword. His ordinary face turned incredibly serious. He slowly turned his head toward the sound.

Camilla heard the sound too. Her heart leaped with absolute joy.

"Yes!" Camilla cheered inside her head. Her internal voice was screaming with victory. "It worked! The magic worked! A snake is coming!"

She turned her head eagerly toward the edge of the gazebo, waiting to see her summoned assassin.

Out from the dark shadows of the thick green bushes, a long, thick, dark green snake slithered out into the bright sunlight.

It was a very large snake. Its scales shone brightly in the sun. It moved with smooth, silent, terrifying speed. It slithered onto the edge of the white wooden ramp, its tongue flicking out rapidly to taste the air.

"My Lord, stay still!" Kade shouted loudly. He drew his heavy steel sword from its sheath. The metal rang sharply in the air. Kade stepped in front of Damon’s wheelchair, placing his own body between the General and the dangerous reptile.

Camilla sat in her wooden chair. She was absolutely thrilled. She had successfully summoned a deadly creature.

"Psst!! Get him!" Camilla urged the snake in her mind. "Go past the guard! Bite his good leg! Make him suffer!"

The thick green snake slithered fully onto the stone floor of the gazebo. It stopped moving for a second. It raised its flat head high into the air. It looked directly at Damon sitting behind the guard.

Damon stared back at the snake. He did not move a single muscle. He watched the creature looking confused.

The snake hissed loudly. It was a terrifying, dry, warning sound.

Then, the snake suddenly turned its head.

It stopped looking at Damon. It completely ignored Kade holding the large steel sword.

Instead, the dark green snake turned its body and looked directly at Camilla.

Camilla’s bright, victorious smile instantly froze on her face. Her eyes went wide with sudden confusion.

"Wait," Camilla thought, her internal voice dropping into a tone of absolute panic. "Why is it looking at me? No, no, no. The target is over there! Look at the man in the chair! He is the one I cursed!"

The snake did not listen to her internal commands. It did not care about her intentions.

Because Camilla’s magic was fundamentally a jinx, it was designed to do the exact opposite of what she hoped for and something was wrong, the snake wasn’t following the rules.

The magic had summoned a snake, and the snake was now angry and looking for a target. Since Damon was immune to her magical influence, the curse rebounded. It bounced right off the male lead’s invisible armor and returned directly to the sender.

The green snake locked its cold, yellow eyes onto Camilla.

"Shoo!" Camilla yelled out loud in a panic, trying to stand up from her wooden chair. "Go away!"

She pushed her chair back, but the heavy silk skirts of her dark red dress got caught beneath the legs of the chair. She stumbled, trying to pull her fabric free.

"I’m coming, my lady." Made assured her moving to kill the snake.

The snake did not hesitate. It moved with blinding, terrifying speed.

It slithered across the stone floor like a dark green whip. It closed the distance between them in less than a second.

As Camilla managed to free her dress and take a step backward, the snake coiled its thick body tightly and launched itself through the air.

The snake struck.

It flew toward her lower leg. Its jaws opened incredibly wide, revealing two long, sharp, curved fangs dripping with clear venom.

"Ah!" Camilla screamed in pure terror.

The snake’s jaws clamped down violently on Camilla’s left ankle, biting right through the thin layer of her silk stocking. The sharp fangs buried themselves deep into her skin.
