Chapter 104: Either Her... Or Me

Ningyan made his way to where the dishes were usually served, joining the long line already waiting there.

He stood patiently until it was his turn, making sure to take enough food for two. Once the dishes were covered and wrapped neatly in cloth, he began walking back toward his house.

His chest felt strangely light.

He was glad Lan Meishan was with him.

Still, he tried his best to push aside what had happened earlier. The strange crystal in that dark void and the sharp pain that had followed it.

As he walked, several children from the community came running toward him, laughing and jumping around as they played.

Ningyan couldn’t help smiling at them.

"Here you go, beautiful master!" The little boy who had approached him the other day with a shell now held out something shiny.

Ningyan accepted it with a smile. "It’s—"

He paused, turning the small gem over between his fingers.

There was an engraving carved into it. Small, but clear.

A phoenix.

Ningyan’s smile slowly faded.

It was the symbol of the Phoenix Clan.

The very clan now ruled by Madam Qin Linhua. The beast who wanted him dead.

His heart skipped violently, his body stiffening.

The boy had already begun to run off, but Ningyan quickly hurried after him.

"Wait!"

The boy stopped and turned back to him.

"Who gave this to you?" Ningyan asked, holding up the gem.

The boy thought for a moment before answering.

"That uncle," he said, pointing to the left side of his face. "He had a scar here."

Ningyan’s senses sharpened instantly.

But he forced himself to keep his expression calm so he wouldn’t scare the child.

"Do you know what kind of beast he was?"

The boy nodded slowly. "A big cat."

Ningyan swallowed. Then he forced a gentle smile and ruffled the boy’s hair. "Alright. Go back to your parents."

The boy nodded and ran off without another thought.

Ningyan remained where he was for a moment, watching him disappear into the crowd.

Then he quickly turned and hurried back to his house.

When he entered, Lan Meishan was waiting for him.

Ningyan forced himself to act completely normal, lifting the cloth bundle with a small smile.

"I have brought us food!" he announced as if nothing had happened at all.

Lan Meishan immediately approached him, taking the bundle from his hands. He looked at it with quiet curiosity before giving Ningyan a small smile. One Ningyan felt he wanted to treasure forever.

Ningyan watched as Meishan walked to the table and began opening the cloth bundle, carefully arranging the dishes. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

He knew it was wrong to keep this from him. There was a very real possibility that an assassin had already found him.

But Ningyan didn’t want to destroy this fragile peace.

He felt a flash of anger at how quickly their serenity had been threatened. Taking a slow breath, he pushed the feeling down and joined Meishan at the table, helping arrange the food.

They ate in silence.

Yet their eyes kept meeting.

Meishan glanced at Ningyan often, as if quietly checking whether he was truly alright.

Ningyan wondered what he was thinking.

He clearly remembered how worried Meishan had been when he woke from that strange vision earlier.

Honestly, Ningyan had expected him to ask about it.

But Meishan only smiled at him.

At first, Ningyan decided to accept that silence.

Then suddenly he set down his spoon and drew in a deep breath.

"I think an assassin has found me."

Lan Meishan froze immediately. "How do you know?"

Ningyan placed the gem on the table and pushed it toward him.

Meishan picked it up and studied it carefully, his expression unreadable.

"You are aware that there are many beasts out there who want you dead," he said quietly.

It wasn’t a question.

Ningyan took another breath. "We.. have to leave here."

He hated the way his voice trembled at his own decision.

Meishan looked up at him, then slowly closed his hand around the gem.

"I have an acquaintance who could shelter us," he said. "We could stay under her protection until I confirm that one of my sanctuaries is free from my family’s supervision."

Ningyan sighed. "We can’t keep running. And this one even had the nerve to send me a sign that he’s here to kill me."

Meishan studied him carefully. "You want to fight them all?"

Ningyan tensed slightly. "Well, I—"

"I can kill them all for you." Meishan said it calmly, completely serious.

The tone made Ningyan’s heart warm.

But he still shook his head.

"No. We can’t risk the other you coming to the surface," he said.

Lan Meishan immediately fell silent, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.

"Then what do we do?" he asked.

Ningyan thought about it carefully. Then his expression darkened at the thought of his stepmother.

"We go to the root of it."

Lan Meishan looked at him in surprise. "Ningyan..."

"If they’re going to keep chasing me, there’s no point hiding anymore," Ningyan continued. "I’ll meet her."

Lan Meishan pressed his lips together thoughtfully. "And what do you intend to say to her?"

Ningyan sighed and rose to his feet. He walked slowly to the window and leaned against it, staring out at the endless blue ocean.

He was really going to miss this place.

But Meishan suddenly reappearing in his life had been proof enough. He couldn’t keep running forever if he truly wanted peace.

And now an assassin had already found him. That only made the truth clearer.

"There can only be one of us left," Ningyan whispered. "Either her... or me."

His eyes glowed faintly with white-gold light.

After a moment, he turned his head to look at Lan Meishan.

Meishan was watching him with that same unreadable expression, which made Ningyan tilt his head slightly.

"What do you think?"

"I think it needs structure," Meishan said calmly. "I can help with that. But first we should make sure we’re somewhere safe. Like Yishu’s."

"Very well." Ningyan nodded slowly.

Then he pushed himself away from the window and walked toward him.

"Hmm?" Meishan looked up as Ningyan approached.

Ningyan smiled before sitting in his lap. Meishan immediately wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close.

Ningyan simply buried his face against his chest and closed his eyes. He really needed this.
