Chapter 127: A Permanent Pest

Night had fallen over the Phoenix Clan.

Ningyan remained within the small forest that bordered the clan grounds, several miles from the manor itself. He had no intention of stepping into the main city. If things went wrong, he refused to let innocent lives be caught in the crossfire.

He did not know how Madam Qin Lihua would retaliate.

But if she refused to dissolve the bounty, then so be it.

He exhaled slowly.

Better to end it quickly.

His gaze dropped to Su Nianci, who still lay unconscious upon the cold earth.

Reaching up, Ningyan removed the illusion mask.

His appearance shifted instantly.

White hair spilled down his back, luminous beneath the moonlight, each strand catching the pale glow of the night. The wind stirred softly, brushing against his robes and hair as if in quiet reverence.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

Then he looked up.

The sky stretched endlessly above him.

...Where was Lan Meishan?

A flicker of unease stirred in his chest.

Had something gone wrong?

His gaze returned to Nianci. He stepped forward, crouching as he lifted her and propped her upright against a tree. Her head lolled forward limply, bits of leaves and twigs caught in her hair.

Ningyan tilted his head slightly, studying her.

What if Madam Qin Lihua refused?

He had said he was ready to spill blood.

But saying it... and facing it... were two different things.

No matter how strong he had become, it was still terrifying.

He reached out, pressing a finger lightly beneath Nianci’s chin to tilt her head back.

It fell forward again.

"...Hopeless."

Then, a familiar, warm presence.

Before he even turned, a smile had already formed on his lips.

Lan Meishan approached from the shadows, robes brushing softly against the ground.

His gaze softened the moment it landed on Ningyan.

Ningyan closed the distance quickly. "How did it go?"

"Exactly as you predicted," Meishan replied calmly. "They were confused. Wondering why I would attend a celebration I was never invited to, especially after losing my title."

"And the letter?" Ningyan pressed.

"She has read it."

The words settled heavily.

Ningyan’s fingers curled slightly at his sides. The confidence he had been forcing wavered, just for a moment.

Still... he stepped forward.

Raising his hands, he cupped Lan Meishan’s face, gently squishing his cheeks.

"I’m sorry," he said softly. "I dragged you into something dangerous. Lan Shiyu was there and I still..."

Lan Meishan blinked at him. "Ningyan—"

"No." Ningyan pulled his hands away and turned aside, his expression tightening. "I made this plan."

His voice lowered.

"A beast like her cannot be reasoned with. Not with peace. Even if I try to walk that path..." He exhaled. "Some things can only be met with equal force."

He turned back, his eyes searching Meishan’s face.

There was something almost desperate in them now.

"You really have to refuse me sometimes, A-Shan," Ningyan said quietly. "Say no. Tell me you won’t."

Lan Meishan’s lips curved faintly. "I cannot refuse my husband."

Ningyan froze. His heart skipped.

Heat rushed to his face as his composure shattered in an instant. He blinked rapidly then stepped forward, wrapping his arms around Meishan and clinging to him.

"When this is over..." he muttered against him, half-serious, half-flustered, "let’s consummate our marriage, alright?"

Lan Meishan stilled. Color rose swiftly to the tips of his ears.

"...Of course."

At that moment, a weak cough broke the moment.

Both Ningyan and Lan Meishan turned at once.

Su Nianci stirred.

Her lashes fluttered as her vision slowly cleared, her gaze unfocused at first before settling on the two figures before her.

For a brief moment, confusion flickered.

Then disbelief.

White hair. Violet eyes.

That face....

"...Ningyan?" Her voice came out hoarse.

Her gaze shifted and froze on the way Ningyan stood close to Lan Meishan.

Too close.

Recognition struck fully. "What is—? That’s Lan Meishan. What is going on?!"

Lan Meishan regarded her calmly, a faint curiosity in his gaze.

Ningyan, however, released his hold on Meishan and stepped forward.

Su Nianci immediately tried to move and froze.

Her body refused to respond.

Panic carved into her expression.

"What...?" Her breath hitched. "Why can’t I move?!"

Ningyan blinked, tilting his head slightly. "Hm. That isn’t supposed to happen."

Her fear twisted instantly into rage. "You wretched thing! What do you think you’re doing?!"

Ningyan let out a soft scoff. "You speak as though you’re the victim."

Nianci’s eyes burned, murderous intent flooding them. "I thought you were dead. But it seems fate is too kind." Her voice rose, venom spilling freely. "Mother will make sure you die screaming or perhaps Hengyue will. Or Qiyuan—"

She laughed harshly.

"Or Mingze might finish what he was meant to do long ago. Rape you to death, you bastard!"

Silence.

For a brief moment, Ningyan said nothing.

He had known she was cruel.

But this?

Disgust flickered plainly across his face.

Behind him, something shifted.

The air grew heavy.

An emerald glow ignited.

Lan Meishan had moved.

Without a word, spiritual energy coiled around Su Nianci, lifting her effortlessly into the air. Her body hung suspended, completely restrained.

Her expression shattered. Panic replaced arrogance.

"No... wait!"

Lan Meishan looked up at her, his emerald serpent eyes glowing faintly, a small crease forming between his brows.

"You should not have said that."

The pressure tightened.

Nianci gasped, her voice breaking. "You—you would side with him?! He’s—!"

Before she could finish, a violent red-gold light tore through the air.

It struck her directly.

Her body was sent flying, crashing harshly against the ground.

Silence followed.

She did not rise again.

Ningyan’s expression flickered, caught between a frown and something else entirely as a familiar presence stepped into the clearing.

Yan Wuhen.

His nine tails swayed lazily behind him, a lazy smile playing on his lips.

"You’re too slow, Lan Meishan," he said lightly.

The emerald glow around Meishan faded.

He did not respond.

Instead, he walked past them both, kneeling beside Nianci to check her pulse, calm, precise, as though nothing else mattered.

Ningyan, however, turned sharply toward Yan Wuhen, arms crossing over his chest.

"For someone with such large ears," he said coolly, "you don’t listen very well."

Yan Wuhen’s smile deepened. He stepped closer.

Ningyan instinctively took a step back but it made no difference.

Yan Wuhen lowered his head, leaning in until his voice brushed against Ningyan’s ear.

"I want to earn your affection, Yan’er," he murmured, his fox eyes gleaming. "I’m not going to leave you."

Ningyan grimaced. "So you’ve decided to become a permanent pest in my life?"

Yan Wuhen chuckled softly. "Bind me," he murmured. "With your own spirit mate chain... Su Ningyan."
