Chapter 87: Not Strong Enough

"And what happens if I give you this information?" Wuhen asked calmly.

Lan Tianheng smirked. "This was never meant to be a negotiation."

His gaze sharpened.

"If I wanted answers, I would have taken the bunny, Tu Lanyin, was it?" His voice remained casual. "I would have gotten everything I needed while I tore her apart."

He paused, then added deliberately, "Or your phoenix."

Wuhen’s breath hitched.

"I hear there’s a bounty on his head now," Tianheng continued lightly. "From Madam Qin Linhua."

For the first time, Wuhen’s heart skipped.

Tianheng noticed. He looked pleased.

"You didn’t know?" he said softly. "Unfortunate. And your father..." His lips curved. "He doesn’t like complications. Do you really think he’ll—"

"Enough." Wuhen cut him off with a dismissive wave.

The air snapped.

Lan Tianheng’s mouth closed abruptly, his lips pressing together as if sealed by force.

Wuhen turned away. "You don’t summon me just to beg for scraps, Lan Tianheng. But it’s been a while since I’ve seen this lake."

He glanced over his shoulder. "So thank you." he took a step to leave.

However, a furious blast of blackish-red energy slammed toward him but a red-gold barrier flared into existence, stopping it cold.

Wuhen turned.

Another serpent beastman stood there, identical to Tianheng save for the deep claw mark raking down one side of his face.

Lan Tianlong.

"You think you’re just going to walk away?" Tianlong snapped.

He shot a glare at his brother. "I told you to kill him."

"I was setting a mood," Tianheng muttered, frowning. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Tianlong snarled, then refocused on Wuhen, red serpent eyes burning. "Did Lan Meishan heal her?"

Wuhen’s lips curled into a slow, taunting smirk.

He said nothing. That was enough.

Tianlong roared and charged, blackish-red energy surging around him like a storm.

Wuhen moved instantly.

Their forces collided mid-air and the impact exploded outward.

Heavy, crushing waves of power tore through the space, ripping across the academy in a single violent surge.

Wuhen gritted his teeth as he engaged Lan Tianlong in brutal hand-to-hand combat, their clashes ringing with glowing force.

Tianlong was relentless. Every strike heavy, precise. Wuhen dodged twice before managing to land a blow of his own.

Tianheng didn’t intervene. He only watched.

That alone told Wuhen everything. One mistake here, one slip against Tianlong, and he would die.

Wuhen hardened his resolve and met Tianlong head-on, evading his attacks with sharpened precision but Tianlong pressed closer, faster, stronger. A veteran. Two hundred years old, at least. Every movement carried lethal experience.

Wuhen hissed sharply.

A sword of red-gold light materialized in his grip. He swung without hesitation, aiming straight for Tianheng’s head but a blackish-red blast slammed into his back from behind.

Pain exploded through him. His nine tails flared violently, lengthening like burning shards as his body was hurled forward. Before he could even process that the attack had come from Tianheng, Tianlong seized him and dragged him under.

They plunged into the lake.

Darkness swallowed them whole, thick with corrupted demonic energy that pulsed like a living thing. And then, right before Wuhen’s eyes, Tianlong was engulfed in an ominous black-red glow.

His form twisted.

A massive serpent emerged, scales glistening beneath the water, crimson eyes narrowing as they locked onto Wuhen.

Shock flickered across Wuhen’s face, then vanished.

His tails ignited like living flames.

He clasped his hands together and shut his eyes. A violent rush of red light erupted outward as he launched himself from the water, hovering above the surface just as the serpent burst free from the lake, charging straight toward him.

Wuhen materialized his sword again and brought it down hard against Tianlong’s neck.

The impact sent a screech tearing through the air. The serpent recoiled and crashed back into the lake, vanishing beneath the dark waters.

Behind Wuhen, Tianheng snarled, fury boiling over. He raised his hand to strike but red-gold light wrapped around him instantly.

Silken bindings coiled tight around his body, locking him in place.

Qinghe stood there, her eyes cold, expression unyielding. "Don’t you dare hurt my brother."

Wuhen glanced at her, a sharp smirk cutting across his face. Pride flickered between them as he stepped to her side.

Then Tianheng let out a long, irritated sigh. "You kids are strong."

The silks dissolved.

"I’ll give you that," he continued quietly.

"But not strong enough."

Qinghe’s eyes narrowed instantly, her body coiling as she prepared to strike. Wuhen’s attention shifted to the lake.

Tianlong emerged from the water, stepping onto the shore as his form shifted back into human. His serpent eyes locked onto Wuhen, sharp and hostile.

Wuhen frowned and moved without hesitation, landing lightly beside his sister. Their tails swayed in perfect sync.

However, academy guards poured into the area, weapons drawn. A handful of curious students followed, whispering among themselves. Rong Yue arrived soon after, his expression grim, and Jun Haoxuan was close behind him.

Finally, Headmaster Fang Lingbo appeared, two guards flanking him, a deep frown carved into his face.

"What is going on here?" he demanded.

Lan Tianheng and Lan Tianlong exchanged a glance. Across from them, Yan Wuhen and Yan Qinghe did the same.

Qinghe spoke first. "We were just about to leave, Headmaster."

Fang Lingbo’s gaze remained fixed on the Lans. The corrupted energy rolling off them was impossible to miss.

"Lan Tianheng. Lan Tianlong," he said coldly. "You are elders. Creating conflict and engaging in battle within academy grounds is strictly prohibited."

Tianlong answered with a hard, unyielding stare. Tianheng, however, smiled.

"We apologise for the disturbance," he said smoothly, even bowing. Then his eyes slid back to Wuhen. Deceptive, dark. "It will all be over soon."

A blackish-red portal bloomed beneath their feet.

In the next breath, both of them were gone.

Shock rippled through the students, whispers breaking out immediately.

Wuhen turned and met Rong Yue’s gaze. He looked serious yet uneasy.

Fang Lingbo exhaled slowly, clearly unsure how to address the twins. At last, he turned to the crowd.

"Everyone, return to your activities. There is nothing to see here."

Even though there was. Everyone could feel it.

The lingering corruption clung to the air, crawling under the skin, whispering of what was coming.

And it was not good.
