Chapter 120: Chapter 120 Overflowing Compassion

Le Tong sat for a little while longer, finished a large glass of water, and then dialed the phone, which connected but no one answered for a long time.

Could he be driving and unable to divert his attention to answer the call?

Le Tong finally ordered a few dishes, ate a little herself, and stayed at the restaurant until nearly nine o’clock before packing the leftover dishes and leaving. During this time, she called Zhong Hao twice more, but both calls went unanswered.

Zhong Hao didn’t seem to be the kind of man who would shirk responsibility so easily or perform poorly; otherwise, he wouldn’t have become the technical director. It’s likely that something urgent came up, and he couldn’t find the time to answer the phone.

Le Tong was not visibly angry or dissatisfied with Zhong Hao’s no-show. She thought it was not worth it to be angry or upset with someone who wasn’t even considered a friend.

She carried the large bag of packed food back to her residence as slowly as she had come, but she didn’t immediately go home. Instead, she rang the doorbell opposite.

"Sister-in-law, I had dinner with a friend. There are lots of leftover dishes, so I packed some for you."

Zhang Yi and his wife came from poor backgrounds and lived very frugally. It wasn’t the first time Le Tong had packed leftover food for them.

"Tongtong, you’re always troubling yourself; how could we accept this?"

Sister-in-law Zhang stepped aside and invited Le Tong into the house. Le Tong handed the bag to Sister-in-law Zhang and changed her shoes to walk into the living room.

In the middle of the living room, a plastic mat was laid out. Wenwen, who had been playing on the mat, stood up and staggered toward Le Tong upon seeing her.

"Sister... Sister..."

Le Tong opened her arms to embrace her and sat cross-legged on the mat holding her.

"Wenwen, want some double-skin milk?"

On the way back, she passed by a dessert shop and deliberately bought a bowl of double-skin milk for Wenwen.

"Want to eat, want to eat..."

Wenwen, who had just turned one year old, spoke haltingly and smiled broadly, showing a few adorable little white teeth.

Le Tong opened the lid of the double-skin milk, handed the spoon to Wenwen. "Wenwen, eat it yourself, okay?"

"Uh... eat myself!"

Wenwen nodded firmly, clumsily scooped a spoonful from the bowl and stuffed it into her mouth.

"Tongtong, you spoil Wenwen too much!"

Sister-in-law Zhang came out of the kitchen, holding a bowl of steaming hot soup.

Le Tong chuckled, "Sister-in-law, you’re making a fuss about nothing. It’s just a bowl of double-skin milk; does that really count as spoiling her?"

Sister-in-law Zhang bent down and handed the steaming soup to Le Tong.

"Your Brother Zhang has been coughing a bit these days. I made some almond soup and kept two bowls for you. Drink it while it’s hot."

Le Tong graciously accepted, blew on it a few times, and took a couple of sips. "Sister-in-law, you say I spoil Wenwen, but you and Brother Zhang spoil me even more!"

Le Tong grew up with only her mother. Most of her relatives avoided them because they were poor, so this familial warmth from a brother-like figure was something she had never enjoyed.

"Tongtong, please don’t stand on ceremony with us. You live alone, so if anything is inconvenient, just tell us, and Brother Zhang and I will definitely try to help as much as we can."

Le Tong drank her soup, nodding. The hot soup warmed not only her stomach but her heart too.

...

The next day, Le Tong went to work as usual. She returned to the office and brewed coffee, bringing it to the President’s office door and knocked.

Generally, if Ji Rui was not present, she would leave the coffee on his desk.

"Come in!" A slightly hoarse voice sounded from inside.

Le Tong pushed the door open, unprepared for the sight that met her eyes.

The lounge was filled with several people, each with a laptop on the coffee table in front of them. The coffee table, floor, and sofa were a chaotic mess, littered with various retail bags, lunch boxes, and clothes.

The meticulous President Ji could actually tolerate such disorder in his office? For a moment, Le Tong thought she had stepped into the wrong place, but aside from the mess, the rest of the furnishings were indeed those of the President’s office.

Among those focused on their computers, the one leading was actually Zhong Hao, who had missed their appointment last night. These people all had one thing in common: they all bore two dark circles under their eyes, but their eyes gleamed like wolves watching the computer screens.

Le Tong shifted her gaze from the lounge to President Ji’s desk, noting that he appeared much more composed than the men in the lounge.

His attire was neat and clean, although he looked slightly fatigued, it was barely noticeable unless one looked very closely.

"Good morning, everyone. Good morning, President!"

Le Tong placed the coffee in front of Ji Rui.

"Morning!"

Ji Rui nodded slightly toward her, and their eyes briefly met. Le Tong sharp-eyed caught a hint of red veins in his eyes.

Le Tong’s gaze returned to the lounge, landing on Zhong Hao again.

Presumably, these people were busy dealing with the hacker intrusion since yesterday, explaining why Zhong Hao missed the appointment.

"Do you need me to order some takeout or make some coffee?"

Le Tong pointed at the people in the lounge who hadn’t looked at her once and asked Ji Rui.

"Hmm, just order something to eat."

Ji Rui nodded, took a shallow sip of the coffee.

Le Tong took note of the order, quietly counted the people, and turned to leave.

The takeout arrived quickly with rice porridge and dumplings. Le Tong helped carry them into the President’s office.

The people in the lounge, presumably all employees of Jisu Company, Le Tong thoughtfully placed a box of dumplings beside each of them, and several starving people unceremoniously grabbed the dumplings and stuffed them into their mouths, their eyes never leaving the screen.

After serving several people who treated her as invisible, Le Tong turned to leave but heard Ji Rui behind her asking.

"Mine?"

Le Tong was slightly taken aback, "Uh, President, you haven’t eaten either?"

Wasn’t that obvious? Earlier she had seen the red bloodshot eyes, clearly indicating he had stayed up all night. Since he had been up all night, logically, President Ji would be hungry too.

Ji Rui didn’t answer, merely watched her quietly.

Ji Rui’s eyes, most likely bloodshot, looked less sharp than usual, and even bore a hint of a pitiful look?

Le Tong cursed herself for having a soft heart while she eagerly ran out to bring her breakfast from home and set it before Ji Rui.

"President, this is your breakfast."

By rights, President Ji lacked nothing and couldn’t even partially be described as pitiful.

But damn it, Le Tong’s eyes had picked up that impression from him, making her feel that her overwhelming sense of sympathy was both absurd and inexplicably helpless.

A beggar showing kindness out of sympathy for a wealthy man without food?
