Chapter 22: How To Resist Devouring Intent

"Then can’t the Great Sable Serpent sense this intent and craving of Crocomanga?" Buan inquired anxiously.

He was worried that he might also be targeted by the guardian Beast God, Great Sable Serpent itself, if it sensed Crocomanga’s craving and decided to get a taste first itself.

After all, he was inside its territory, and it wouldn’t have trouble like Crocomanga to come and devour him.

However, Selera put his worries to rest with her next words:

"No one other than the target of the craving can be affected by it. Don’t worry about the guardian beast god."

Buan let out a sigh of relief, finally calming down.

After a few moments of silence, a question appeared in his head just out of curiosity as he asked:

"Mother, why doesn’t the Great Sable Serpent attack our tribe if we are in its territory?"

Selera gave him a complex look, asking with suspicion: "Shouldn’t you already know this? You used to pester your father and me about such questions all the time in your childhood."

"Really?" Buan scratched the tip of his nose embarrassingly. "Why don’t I remember?"

The original owner’s memories only had patches of scenes and information, and that too, from the last two years. No information about the tribe or beast gods were present.

Buan could only try to act clueless and natural about it to not arouse suspicion. Moreover, since the original owner used to ask such questions in his childhood, it wouldn’t be unusual for him to forget such information after so many years.

Selera, on the other hand, made her own explanation for Buan’s alleged amnesia.

’Did his memory get affected from the trauma of facing the beast god? I’ve noticed a lot of changes in him today.’

She stared at Buan with a thoughtful gaze for a while and then nodded:

"Alright. Let me explain. Our tribe is on the outskirts of the Beast God’s territory, and we even offer it some of our food once a month for its protection. Moreover, our tribe was established here first, and the serpent came later. Even without its protection, we would be safe."

Buan blinked in confusion. "How?"

Selera smiled and explained: "Because we have the heart of the Beast God your father killed to establish our tribe."

"What??" Buan’s eyes snapped wide open in shock. "H-He killed a Beast God??"

’He has really suffered damage to his memory. How can he forget this?’ Selera commented to herself in her heart in pity.

However, outside, she remained smiling as she nodded and revealed: "Yes. Our Vila Tribe wasn’t originally here. We came from the west, and your father led the charge to establish this tribe. Only after killing a beast god could he establish a tribe, so he killed one right here and established the Vila Tribe."

’What is this nonchalance in her voice? She is speaking of killing a Beast God. Just now she was calling them a different species altogether, and now she is talking as if killing them is easy.’

Buan’s heart shook, a wave of disbelief forming a whirlpool in his very being.

He had faced a Beast God, and in front of it, everything seemed futile. It was as if nothing could damage it. It seemed invincible, so how was his father able to slay one?

"Has anyone else killed a Beast God other than him?" Buan inquired with a shaky voice.

He wanted to know if killing a beast god was a rare occurrence or something legendary.

Selera shook her head with a proud smile. "Do you really think anyone is capable enough to slay a beast god other than your father? He had the royal blood of warriors of Vila running through his veins. He was like a calamity in himself. None came close. Killing a Beast God was considered impossible before your father did so."

Buan got chills as he heard her talk. He could feel that she admired his father deeply and was proud to be his widow.

However, Buan couldn’t understand how a warrior as great as him died.

From the original owner’s memories, Buan could only find out that his father left with a group of warriors towards the west, the very direction they came from, and only one warrior of that group returned alive, and that was the current strongest warrior of the tribe — Shokan.

However, Shokan had become a mute and had lost his tongue when he returned. He even refused to write about what had happened there, only conveying the news of the death of Buan’s father and other warriors.

Thus, no one in the tribe knew how his father met his end, and Shokan refused to reveal anything.

"So does that mean the heart of the beast god that my father slayed repels every beast from approaching the tribe?" Buan looked at Selera and asked with raised brows.

Selera nodded: "Yes. It is our tribe’s most sacred treasure, something that every tribe envies us for."

Buan remained silent for a while, returning to the most important question at hand:

"So does that mean I have no choice other than to suffer nightmares all my life?"

Selera shook her head, prompting Buan’s eyes to brighten with hope.

She held Buan’s hand and spoke with sincerity: "Buan, you have the royal blood of warriors of Vila in your veins. Even a beast god would be tempted to have it for themselves. There is only one way to defend against such a devouring intent."

Buan’s eyes shone with an expectant light, his gaze full of hope. "What way?"

Selera hesitated a little before speaking in one go: "Sleep with me and Lira on our bed from now on."

"W-What?" Buan took a step back in surprise.

"Don’t misunderstand." Selera clarified right away, explaining the science behind it. "The craving can only target you if you’re alone. If you have someone beside you while you sleep, the devouring intent would weaken, and you will feel much safer, letting your will become strong enough to resist the devouring intent of the Beast God, Crocomanga."

Buan remained silent for a while; however, with nothing else as an option, he agreed. This was nothing in return for escaping the nightmares.

After two hours, he was lying on a king-size fur bed in between Lira and Selera.

Selera seemed to have fallen asleep, turning her back to him; however, he was unable to fall asleep.

’How can I sleep when I can see her irresistible waist, thighs, ass, and legs? She is just too hot, damn it!’
