True Alpha's Chosen Mate-Chapter 298: An interesting person
Octavian Highmore. A man who lived up to his reputation. He was a vicious man and someone who was worthy of someone’s fear.
Although the duke was undoubtedly good-looking, especially in his uncreased uniform, neatly brushed back ebony hair, and sharp facial structure, his soul was the complete opposite. He was the ugliest man a woman would ever meet. He was the worst.
If only he was that charming, then he didn’t have to abduct my mother to make her his ninth wife. Yes. The duke had a lot of children from different women. We’re a lot that I hadn’t met with the rest of my siblings because of the hierarchy in this place. Only those who I would constantly bump into, of course.
Right now, in this dining hall, there were just the three of us. The duke, Paris, and me. Lucien, who clinched the top spot, was still on his way from his conquest. The rest who were usually dining with us were also on a mission. Only Paris and I weren’t assigned to a task, since our last mission granted us some time off.
"Father, you’re an hour late. Can you schedule our dinner time at the time you think you can arrive on time? Callie and I will die of starvation if you’re always late," Paris grumbled as the servants started serving the small feast for the three of us.
"I always schedule my dinner with my children at the time I believed I will be on time." The duke smiled as he shrugged. "It’s just that something unexpected happens each time. Don’t blame me, son."
"Tch." Paris snapped his tongue as his frown grew uglier.
"Father, you seemed to be in a great mood. I wonder what great news have you received for you to pardon Paris’s rambling?" I asked out of plain curiosity and with a humorous tone.
"Well, I had this interesting encounter during my inspection in the fort," he said as the corners of his lips stretched broader, picking up the glass of wine and swirled it until the red thick liquid coated the transparent glass. "On my way back to the fort, I met this interesting person standing on top of a moving carriage whilst looking around."
"Hah?! Really?" Paris’s mouth formed an o-shape as his eyes twinkled. "Wow... people nowadays just keep getting even more interesting!"
The duke laughed and nodded in agreement. "I cannot disagree."
"So what happened?" I picked my cutlery, a little interested in this encounter because it wasn’t an everyday thing to hear someone riding the roof of a moving carriage.
"I caught him." I froze momentarily when I heard the duke’s proud answer. "He’s one feisty dog, too. It’s funny how he had broken the bones of a few of my men. I wouldn’t be surprised that he would take them down, even if they attacked him all at once."
"Wow... that’s interesting," Paris commented in amusement, not finding anything wrong with the duke’s actions and words. He was already used to it, but no matter how long I would live, I wouldn’t get used to this. I didn’t want to, honestly.
My emotions... I wouldn’t let this place take the little control I had in my life. I might just be being stubborn because it was easier to just become bad without reasons. However, I didn’t find pleasure in other people’s fears, nor did I ever find it enjoyable watching someone while their life slowly slipped away from their eyes.
"How did you restrain him?" asked Paris, continuing the conversation without even touching his food while I started eating small portions. "It doesn’t look like you’ve gone into a fight, Your Grace. If this loose wild dog can par with at least seven of your elite knights, how did you catch him?"
Octavian chuckles’ subsided as he raised the wineglass to his lips. Once he took a sip, he licked his lips before their corners hooked up into a smirk.
"I bribed him," he answered, as a matter of fact. "Apparently, he doesn’t like money. So I bribed him with food and the fool instantly agreed without a second hesitation. Even I am surprised that such a simpleton would exist in this world."
"Hah... how foolish, indeed," I snickered as I wiped the corner of my lips. I wanted to change the subject as it was affecting the taste of the steak. However, before I could speak, Paris spoke once again.
"Your Grace, can I play with him? I mean, if he’s that strong, I want to see who’s stronger between him and me!" he suggested excitedly. "I want to have a warm-up partner before Lucien returns! I’ll snatch that top spot from him!"
"Haha! Son, I like your enthusiasm for beating Lucien for once. However, I don’t think I can fulfill your wish."
"Your Grace, why not? Are you finally showing favoritism to your children?" he frowned and looked at the duke as if he was judging his entire existence.
"If I will ever gain favoritism, I’m certain the one I will favor the most is my beautiful Callie." My lips automatically curled up as I looked at Paris teasingly even before I could think about it; my body, my face, and my expression just acted to save me before I scoff in dismay.
Paris’s frown grew milder as he glanced up to ponder. "Well, if it’s Callie, I don’t mind." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
"My son, it seems you’re the one who has favoritism." The duke humored with a teasing laugh before he cleared his throat. "Anyway, the reason I couldn’t fulfill your request is that you need to ask our guest himself."
"Our guest?" I blurted out as I quirked a brow, setting my eyes to the duke.
"Yes. Our guest," he affirmed with a sly smirk. "Although he is someone I would like to catch, like what a dog he is, I figured it’s terrible to tame a pet if I approached it with violence. Hence, I invited him as a guest."
I was a little stunned at the words that came out of the duke’s mouth. Even Paris was dumbfounded into silence.
"He must be very interesting and remarkable to gain your recognition," I muttered when I recovered, but just when I thought the surprise would stop there, the duke’s next words felt like a bucket of ice-cold water poured on me.
"He is! For a werewolf like him, he is certainly special!"
No... way. I thought, feeling my heart leap against my chest. It couldn’t be he was talking about him, right?
"A werewolf?!" Paris gasped, while the duke nodded and chuckled.
"Yes. A werewolf. If I remember his name, it was..." While the duke tried to recall the werewolf’s name, I prayed he would say a different one. But what I dreaded came just when I prayed.
"... it’s something like... S... Seven?"
