Chapter 25: Encounter with the Police

Viper wiped the blood off her face, carefully checking her body to ensure there were no stains left.

Her movements were incredibly precise and professional. In just a few moments, there wasn’t a single trace of blood visible on her.

"Hey, do you know how to pick a lock? Go open the door and let our people in," she said.

Caught off guard, Dusk blinked blankly for a few seconds before shaking his head. He had never needed to pick locks before—usually, he just smashed them open.

"Are you sure?" she asked, skeptical.

After all, he’d said he didn’t know how plenty of times before, but somehow he always ended up knowing how to do it anyway.

"This time, I swear it’s a hundred percent true. If you don’t want to waste time, do it yourself," Dusk replied with a pout.

It was frustrating—telling the truth and still not being believed. It wasn’t like he was some omniscient god or anything like that.

Maybe after beating someone up, Viper was in a better mood now, because she didn’t push him further.

"Alright, then just watch and learn."

With that, the two of them headed to the door. Since they had no idea where the young guy had kept the key, they had no choice but to force the lock.

She pulled out a specialized lock-picking set and got to work. After a short while, the lock clicked open.

"Got it memorized?" 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

"Are you f**king kidding me? I’m not a damn superhuman," Dusk snapped. He couldn’t even see her hand movements clearly—how the hell was he supposed to learn?

As if something amusing had crossed her mind, she looked at him with a playful smile.

"If you ever start disobeying, I can lock you up and not worry one bit. Since you don’t know how to pick locks, you won’t be going anywhere."

She had clearly taken note of even his smallest reactions. It was obvious now—he really didn’t know the first thing about lock-picking. That was a weakness.

Dusk couldn’t be bothered to argue with her anymore. He had no idea how he’d ended up in her hands—maybe he’d wronged her in a past life or something.

Once the door opened, they were met with a surprise. Aldric was nowhere to be seen. Only Silas remained, still waiting outside.

Viper frowned. By all logic, even if Aldric was running a bit late, he shouldn’t be this slow.

"Where’s Aldric?" she asked.

"I don’t know either. Haven’t heard anything from him," Silas replied with a shake of his head.

Something was definitely wrong. They were professional mafia—none of them would be late for a mission over some stupid excuse.

She pulled out her phone and called Mirella to check on his status.

"Hey, where’s Aldric? We need him right now."

"Sorry, I just heard from him. He said his fiancée wants to call off the engagement. He’s not in the right mindset to work."

"What?!"

Hearing that, Viper nearly missed a step.

What the hell was that? Just which damn bitch was messing with her precious doctor?

"Tsk. Send me the address. Once I’m done here, I’m paying that whore a visit."

Silas looked at her and asked, "So what should I do now?"

Viper rubbed her chin. Originally, she planned to unlock the door for Aldric, but since he wasn’t coming, that plan was off.

"Just stay alert. If anything unusual happens, report to me immediately."

"Understood," Silas nodded.

"You have a kitchen knife, right? Get the ingredients and cook it for me," she said to Dusk.

"I don’t know how to cook," Dusk replied.

He wasn’t a damn chef. What if he messed it up? She’d just use it as an excuse to give him hell. He had no interest in being tortured.

"It just needs to be cooked. We don’t have time. But it needs to be effective," Viper said.

Since she put it that way, he had no reason to argue. He gave a short nod, grabbed the knife, and got to work.

The house had a stove and pots, so he tossed the heart in and started boiling it for her. Since she mentioned they didn’t have much time, he even chopped it into smaller pieces.

Viper didn’t just sit around waiting. While the "meal" was being prepared, she walked around the house, rearranging the crime scene to make it look like an accident.

The victim was a young man who, due to carelessness, had caused a gas leak and accidentally lit a flame. After that, there was nothing left.

Once everything was ready, Viper walked over to check on Dusk’s progress. Seeing the heart had turned pitch black while being boiled, she frowned.

"You didn’t put anything strange in there, did you? Why is it black?"

"The heart broke its own seal, so its color changed. It was already black the moment I took it out of his chest," Dusk replied.

She was skeptical, but time was pressing, so she didn’t press the issue. She quickly tried a piece.

A strange sensation began stirring inside her body. It wasn’t strength or power. It felt more like something was brewing deep within her.

"Feeling something?" Dusk asked. "If you are, then it means your body is absorbing the energy from him—your heart is slowly taking it in."

Hearing that, she nodded and continued to devour the rest without hesitation. Once she finished, she and Dusk left the house, leaving behind an automatic detonator.

"What’s that?" Dusk asked.

"Explosives. It’s going to ignite the gas that’s been leaking throughout the house," Viper said.

They all got in the car and drove away. Once they were far enough, she detonated it. A massive blaze erupted, engulfing the entire house and erasing all traces of their presence.

The surrounding houses weren’t so lucky. The fire quickly spread, catching the neighbors off guard.

Would Viper care about those innocent people?

Of course not. She was a criminal, not a charity worker.

But as fate would have it, a patrol car happened to be nearby at that very moment.

"Quick! Snap a photo of their license plate and follow them!" one officer shouted.

"Why?" his partner asked, confused.

"I don’t know. I just have a feeling they’re suspicious."

"A cop working on feelings?"

"Just shut up and follow them. I’ll take full responsibility."

At that very moment, the giant explosion lit up the area behind them. The timing was too perfect. The young officer’s gut instinct screamed at him even louder.

"Go! Hurry!"

His partner, now feeling a little suspicious himself, hit the gas and gave chase.

The sound of a police siren blared through the air, catching everyone’s attention. Hearing the siren and seeing the patrol car behind them, all of them frowned.

"Did we get exposed somewhere?" Dusk asked. As far as he could tell, they had been extremely careful.

"I’ve got no idea. Maybe they just got lucky and made a wild guess that happened to be right," Viper said. That was the only explanation she could think of.
