True Immortal Heart-Chapter 40: An Unexpected Situation
Dusk wasn’t particularly surprised by her question. After all, his behavior didn’t exactly resemble that of an ordinary citizen.
"I work as a porter. Believe it or not, it’s up to you. Just assume all the strange things you saw were thanks to my natural talent." He answered vaguely.
After all, he couldn’t exactly tell her that he had lived for three hundred years in a world ravaged by demons and heart masters.
Will Viper believe it? Definitely not. No matter how gifted someone might be, there was no way they were born with fully developed skills.
It was entirely possible for a genius to invent an incomplete technique and slowly refine it over time.
"If you don’t want to say, then fine. By the way, does your gun have any bullets?" She asked directly since she hadn’t been able to take the weapon from him. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
"Why do you ask?" Dusk didn’t answer right away, unable to guess her intentions.
"If you’re out of bullets, I could give you some. Or we could trade for a different gun. I have no intention of confiscating your weapon—after all, you won’t be aiming it at me." She said bluntly.
Hearing that, Dusk felt somewhat reassured. Still, he was not entirely convinced that she was harmless.
"Five rounds. Should be enough," he replied.
Five bullets wouldn’t mean much on the battlefield, but within the city, they were more than sufficient.
"Good. Not messing with you anymore. Get some rest," she said with a nod.
"Aren’t you going to rest too?" he asked.
After all, they were both still mortals. If she were a heart master, he wouldn’t have wasted his breath on a question like that.
It wasn’t that heart masters of Rank 1 didn’t need sleep—rather, they slept very little and could enter a half-sleeping, half-alert state when not engaged in critical tasks.
Of course, sleeping more would hasten their recovery. After intense battles, heart masters would often sleep for days.
Viper frowned, eyeing Dusk suspiciously.
"Are you planning something indecent? Why else would you tell me to rest?"
"Stop being delusional. Look at yourself—what part of you do you think is tempting enough for me to even bother?" Dusk retorted, then ignored her entirely and shut his eyes again.
She worked for a little while longer, grabbed a quick bite, and then finally settled down to rest.
...
When night fell, she had someone prepare the gear in advance in the hotel.
"Hey, it’s go time. Stop sleeping," she said.
"I’ve been waiting all day to hear you say that. Just lying around was getting boring." Dusk immediately opened his eyes and replied.
The two of them quickly slipped through a hidden passageway and entered the storage room of the hotel. Viper retrieved two large barrels that had already been prepared.
Dusk frowned at the sight of the barrels. He couldn’t quite figure out what was inside.
"What’s this?" he asked.
"Gasoline bombs. I prepped a little something to burn that bitch’s house down. By the way, can you carry one of these?" She gave him a doubtful look.
After all, the barrels weren’t light, and she wasn’t sure just anyone could lug one around while sneaking about at the same time.
"Who do you think you’re looking down on? I’ve been hauling cargo for years—don’t tell me I can’t carry one damn barrel." Dusk responded with a scowl.
But she immediately shook her head and replied,
"That’s exactly why I’m doubting you. Do you know how to sneak around while carrying something heavy? If you’re too noisy or clumsy, we’ll get spotted in no time."
Well, maybe his cargo-lifting experience wouldn’t help much in this situation—but his 300 years of survival sure would.
"Of course I can handle it. And don’t be so surprised when I know weird stuff," Dusk said confidently.
Hearing the certainty in his voice did reassure her a little, though she wasn’t about to place full trust in him just yet.
She pulled out her phone and called over a muscular man.
"He’ll be assisting us, but the real job still falls to you and me. No objections, right?" she said.
"None at all. Just hurry up and burn that place down so I can get my part of the job started," Dusk replied.
The three of them got into a vehicle and drove straight toward Seraphine’s mansion. Naturally, they weren’t about to enter through the front door—they’d find a quiet spot before making their move.
Seraphine’s mansion wasn’t just a single building—it spanned a vast estate located far from the city center, occupying an expansive area.
Inside the estate, trees were planted in abundance, and the lack of a proper defense system left numerous vulnerabilities throughout the compound.
Of course, no ordinary architect would ever design a highly fortified security system for the home of what was supposed to be a regular civilian.
But then something completely unexpected happened. A massive fire had already erupted within the estate, leaving all three of them stunned.
"What the hell happened? If the place is already up in flames like that, doesn’t that mean we’ve got nothing left to do?" Dusk asked.
’Nothing left to do? Even better. That means I can leave right now.’
He silently thought to himself, quite pleased with the unexpected twist of fate.
Viper, however, was anything but happy. This was supposed to be her act of revenge. And yet, before she even had the chance to make her move, someone else had beaten her to it.
"Damn it. I need to find out who the hell ruined my plan." She let out an annoyed snort.
Still, she couldn’t help but feel a small sense of satisfaction at Seraphine’s misfortune—and by extension, that of her entire family.
Suddenly, Dusk felt a strange sense of unease. Something was off. Society seemed to be spiraling into chaos faster than it had in his previous life.
’System... Me being reborn isn’t triggering some kind of chain reaction in this era, is it?’
[Master, your reincarnation is absolutely changing this world in major ways. You may not have taken any significant actions yet, but how do you know you’re the only one capable of cheating the system? You could say you’ve returned to an era where multiple individuals have been "buffed," so be cautious.]
Dusk’s eyes widened slightly. A sense of urgency settled deep in his gut.
Originally, he’d assumed the worst-case scenario would be creating a minor butterfly effect. But now it seemed there were others who had received powerful opportunities in this timeline as well.
’I need to pick up the pace, fast. If not, damn it, I’m going to fall behind. I thought dealing with protagonists blessed by luck was already over the top, but now it turns out this entire era is full of "buffed" monsters too.’
Dusk let out a slow breath, but there was no fear in his eyes. Other people might have their fateful encounters, but did that mean he wouldn’t?
