Chapter 39: Chapter 38: Skeleton Altar

Entering the mine, the interior instantly turned dark.

The air was filled with the smell of ore, making it extremely turbid. Those tiny particles entered the body with each breath, causing discomfort over time.

Following the mine tunnel, which was only about two meters wide, Zheng Yi carefully led the way forward.

No one knew how deep or far they had walked when the space ahead began expanding, and the two of them finally arrived at a sizable pit.

All around, the stone walls bore signs of excavation. The hard surface of the ore revealed marks from various tools. The surroundings were desolate, clearly abandoned, with all the ore inside completely cleared out. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Reaching out to touch one of the stone walls, Zheng Yi pried off a patch of a dark metallic sheen from its surface.

This was a small piece of raw Black Iron Essence Stone, unprocessed and unrefined, yet its hardness could still be felt.

Further ahead were pitch-black tunnels extending inward. These were the passages miners had dug to search for Black Iron Ore.

By arriving here, Zheng Yi surmised he had seen enough of the mine and didn’t intend to proceed further.

"Sir, the passage on the far right is a place the Qi Yuan Sect has decreed strictly off-limits to everyone. People from the Main Lineage have long guarded it, and even I don’t know what’s inside,"

Qi Lin suddenly said.

He looked up, his tone somewhat hesitant.

Gazing at the dark passage that resembled the throat of a giant beast, one couldn’t help but feel an invisible, chilling terror that inspired awe.

"Tell me more,"

Zheng Yi stopped in his tracks and asked with interest.

"Sir, this passage belongs to the Qi Family Main Lineage and is strictly prohibited. Except for authorized Qi Family members, anyone else who trespasses, whether intentionally or not..."

"If discovered, they are executed immediately,"

Qi Lin explained in detail.

"Even someone like me from the family’s middle tier, or the Qi Family’s side branches, is no exception."

"I’ve heard this passage is a place that devours people without a trace."

"Every month, the number of miners decreases by about thirty percent. Aside from a few who die from exhaustion, the rest who go missing are said to have been sent into this passage, never to be seen again."

"As a result, this passage became known among miners as Devil’s Alley."

"Eventually, even without Qi Family guards, no one dared to come to this place."

The so-called Devil’s Alley piqued Zheng Yi’s interest.

"Mysterious and bewitching..."

"Looks like this is the place!"

Zheng Yi scoffed.

It was clear that the Qi Family Main Lineage implemented such extreme and unreasonable measures to conceal something, to prevent anyone from discovering their secrets.

But anything guarded so zealously must have a motive.

Before Qi Lin could finish talking, Zheng Yi summoned the Soul-Catching Banner. Black mist engulfed him entirely, maxing out his defense, while several Yin Soldiers and Fierce Ghosts were dispatched to lead the way.

Having confirmed thoroughly, Zheng Yi eagerly entered.

Qi Lin wanted to follow, but Zheng Yi left him outside.

Perhaps wanting to impress his new master, but seeing his legs trembling almost uncontrollably, Zheng Yi decided not to take him along.

If they encountered any danger, Zheng Yi wouldn’t have time to care for Qi Lin, making it more suitable for him to venture alone.

Moreover, Zheng Yi was very interested in the secrets the Qi Family Main Lineage was hiding.

To be handled so cautiously, laid out by a Qi Cultivation Clan over several generations, it couldn’t be simple.

If the secrets involved anything related to cultivation and Qi Lin saw them, Zheng Yi didn’t want to resort to killing to silence him.

After all, the Nine Yin Gathering Evil Extinct Meridian Array was not a simple array!

As Zheng Yi entered the right passage in the mine tunnel and walked further, everything was pitch black and silent, eerily quiet.

The passage had undergone long-term modifications and repairs. The ceiling had been artificially leveled.

However, since it was classified as forbidden, obviously, it had been a long time since anyone had come here.

At first, Zheng Yi wasn’t sure if it was an illusion, but the further he walked, the more he felt a chill rising from beneath his feet.

The icy cold seemed to emanate from the soles of his feet, through the hard rock floor, directly permeating his heart.

Drafts of cold air swept through from unseen ventilation shafts.

The icy breath brushed against his face, feeling like a sharp blade grazing it, making the hairs on his body stand on end.

As he ventured deeper, the chill seemed to rise not just from below, but from all around, flooding in such that defending against it was impossible.

"Such heavy Yin Qi,"

"Even gloomier than the Ghost Schools and Ghost Underground Parking Lots in the Doomsday World..."

"This Qi Family really has big secrets!"

A sliver of interest and excitement showed on Zheng Yi’s face as he continued forward.

The chill intensified, almost freezing him entirely, with the air turning into cold mists that poured out endlessly from the front, filling the passage.

"No more path?!"

As he continued walking and turned a corner, he faced a dead-end; a wall of rock blocked the path ahead.

It seemed everything ended here.

Within the alley, only dull, murky air remained, deathly silent, along with the ever-present surging chill.

Of course, this clumsy concealment was something Zheng Yi didn’t believe.

For ordinary mortals or Low-Tier Loose Cultivators, this might have some allure, but for someone intent on coming here, it wasn’t enough to deter.

Boom!

A flash of cold light appeared as a Flying Sword materialized in Zheng Yi’s hand. With a pinpoint strike, the cold light surged, and the sword slashed at the wall.

The thick wall was cleaved open with a large gash, and Zheng Yi stepped inside with raised foot.

"Damn..."

Zheng Yi almost let out a curse.

"The Qi Family really has guts!"

Entering the hidden space, seeing everything clearly, even Zheng Yi couldn’t help but take a deep breath.

The scene before him was full of bones.

With a slash from Zheng Yi’s sword, behind what appeared to be a natural rock wall, a hidden chamber was revealed. This was the secret the Qi Family painstakingly kept.

But what shocked even Zheng Yi was that within the spacious chamber crevice lay a gigantic Skeleton Altar.

Numerous bones were stacked layer upon layer. The number of the dead was unknown; their flesh was completely gone, clean and bare as if swallowed and absorbed by some eerie force, leaving only twisted, cold bones, evidence of immense suffering before death.

Each skull, with hollow eye sockets, was turned toward the altar, and from their empty cavities emanated endless eeriness and chill.
