Chapter 94: Chapter 94 - Late Enough

Lucas immediately tensed. He didn’t need to check the system log to know that things were about to get complicated. His so-called "gift," [Charm of the Forbidden], had a ridiculous way of activating at the worst possible times. And this—this was absolutely one of those times.

The innkeeper stepped around the counter, her every movement exuding grace and confidence. Her curves were accentuated by the snug fit of her bodice, and her dress flowed elegantly with each step. The sheer presence of her made the room feel warmer.

"Welcome to The Velvet Hearth," she purred, her emerald eyes locking onto Lucas with dangerous amusement. "How may I assist you, travelers?"

Lucas could feel his soul leaving his body. Why does it always have to be like this?

Lena, oblivious to his inner turmoil, stepped forward. "We’d like to rent two rooms for the night."

The innkeeper tilted her head, her lips curving into a teasing smile. "Two rooms? How unusual." Her gaze flicked between them. "You seem quite comfortable with each other. Most couples would opt for one."

Lucas choked on air.

Lena’s eyes widened slightly before a faint blush dusted her cheeks. "W-We’re not a couple!" she protested, waving her hands. "He’s just—just my companion!"

Lucas shot her a look. "Wow. Thanks for making me sound like an abandoned pet."

Lena ignored him, still flustered. "Just two rooms, please."

The innkeeper chuckled, clearly enjoying their reactions. "Of course, dear. Two rooms it is." She extended a hand, her perfectly manicured fingers resting on the wooden counter. "That will be 10 silver per room."

Lucas mentally sighed in relief as Lena dug into his coin pouch and handed over the silver. At least that distraction is over.

But then the innkeeper leaned in slightly, her voice lowering just enough to send another alarm through his system. "A shame, really," she mused. "If it were me... I’d keep someone like him close at night."

Lucas felt his brain short-circuit.

Lena, to his absolute horror, stiffened before throwing him a look that screamed what the hell did you do?!

"I—uh—I’m just gonna—" Lucas took a step back, trying to avoid any further complications, but the innkeeper simply chuckled again.

"Oh, I’m just teasing, dear." Her green eyes sparkled with mischief. "Don’t worry. Your rooms are ready."

Lena snatched the keys from the counter and practically dragged Lucas toward the staircase. "Let’s go. Now."

Lucas didn’t argue. He had survived lava slimes, but he wasn’t sure he could survive another second of that conversation.

As they reached the second floor, Lena turned to him with narrowed eyes. "What. Was. That?"

Lucas ran a hand down his face. "Nothing. I don’t know. Let’s just go to our rooms and pretend this never happened."

Lena huffed. "You better not use your weird spin move to ’accidentally’ crash into my room."

After getting their room keys, Lucas and Lena made their way upstairs. Once they reached the hallway, they exchanged a brief nod before heading to their respective rooms.

Lucas tossed his bag into the corner and stretched, his muscles aching from the long journey. His clothes clung uncomfortably to his skin, damp with sweat and grime.

"A bath. I need a bath now."

As he closed his door, he nearly bumped into Lena, who was also needed a bath.

"You want to shower too?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Lucas nodded. "Yeah. Feels like I’ve been dipped in oil all day."

Lena scoffed. "Agreed. Let’s find the bathhouse before we pass out from exhaustion."

The two made their way downstairs and approached the innkeeper, a voluptuous woman who seemed to radiate confidence and amusement. She leaned against the counter, her emerald eyes glimmering as she noticed them approaching.

"Ah, looking for the bathhouse?" she asked, her voice smooth as silk.

"Yeah," Lena answered. "Where is it?"

The innkeeper smiled and gestured toward the hallway leading deeper into the inn. "Just down that corridor, at the very end. Men’s on the left, women’s on the right."

"Thanks," Lena said before heading straight to the women’s section without a second thought. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Lucas followed toward the men’s entrance, but just as he reached for the door, the innkeeper suddenly stepped in his way, her smile turning coy.

"Ah, unfortunately, the men’s bath is full right now," she purred, tilting her head slightly.

Lucas blinked. "Full?"

The innkeeper nodded, her eyes never leaving him. "Mm-hmm. Completely packed. A group of mercenaries came in earlier, and it doesn’t seem like they’ll be leaving anytime soon."

Lucas frowned. "I can just wait—"

"Oh, no need for that," she interrupted smoothly. "Why don’t you come back a little later? Maybe... when things are quieter. Late at night, perhaps?"

Lucas stiffened. His instincts screamed at him—this was exactly the kind of situation where his [Charm of the Forbidden] would trigger some kind of unnecessary trouble.

He coughed awkwardly. "I, uh... I’ll think about it."

The innkeeper’s smile widened. "Take your time, dear~"

Without another word, Lucas turned on his heel and walked away, feeling like he had just avoided stepping into a trap.

"Of course this had to happen. Just once, I’d like a normal bath."

Now, the only question was: What the hell was he supposed to do until then?

Lucas sat on the edge of his bed, exhaling heavily. The innkeeper’s teasing words still lingered in his mind.

"Come back later, when things are quieter~"

His fingers drummed against his thigh as he debated his next move. He could try sneaking into the men’s bath early, but there was no telling if the place was still packed. The last thing he wanted was to run into a bunch of drunk adventurers splashing water at each other.

"Might as well wait."

He lay back, staring at the wooden ceiling, his body still sticky with sweat and grime. The exhaustion from traveling all day was finally catching up to him.

"I’ll just close my eyes for a bit. Then I’ll go when it’s late enough."
