Chapter 181: Inner turmoil

The drumming in her chest reverberated towards multiple parts in Arabella’s body, namely in the young woman’s throat where it was the most felt, clogging her winpipes and by the same occasion the words from flowing out.

"Why would you think Edgar has done something wrong?" the narrowing of his eyes did not help her state one bit.

No answer came through for Arabella still failed to grasp the reason Silas brought Edgar up in the first place.

Did the vampire perhaps think that Edgar broke a rule he wasn’t supposed to? Otherwise, why would the gardener be mentioned in such a conversation at all?

Even the light tea that had successfully reached her stomach threatened to ascend back from whence it descended.

Churning feverishly among her guts until the temperature of her entire body began to rise, initially earning her face a pinkish shade that quickly shifted to a scarlet red.

But the effects did not stop at switching skin undertones. Indeed, the heat boiling her continued to climb before the young woman noticed the weakening of her vision. A sort of blurriness that started from the edges of the world around her only to expand inward, befogging everything her Irises fell upon.

"Is something the matter?" his traits weren’t as harsh as their usual, but they let nothing on either which wasn’t any more reassuring than his words.

It was all too much to handle for her and thus, in a spur, Arabella leaped from the chair and sprinted towards the bathroom while blurting something about needing cold water.

Hand pressed against her own mouth, the young woman prayed the digestive system in her wouldn’t act up and try to expel the very little she’d ingested. Not only for the pain and inconvenience it’d cause, but for the racket that’d surely inform everything that had ears in the manor of her condition.

As cold as the water was, no amount of it seemed to do for even it promised to evaporate the moment it touched her sizzling skin.

The air around her revealed unreasonable, denying her lungs the amount of fuel necessary to keep her from collapsing.

Sensing what was coming her way, Arabella gripped the edges of the bathtub in order to lower herself onto the ground. That way, should the lights in her eyes have gone out, the hits sustained from the fall wouldn’t yield as much damage as if it was from a standing position.

But none of that managed to quiet the shrieking voices in her head, not for the sliver of a second.

On the contrary, they screamed even louder, rendering her ears deaf to the rest of the world. None of it mattered, only the insults and chastising hurled at her blared, blaming her for everything that’s ever gone wrong in her as well as everyone else’s lives, at least those who’d rubbed shoulders with her.

They all suffered terrible fates just because of her existence alone, didn’t they? First her brother, then her mother, Silas who was forced out of his element just to get her back safely. Even Edna’s life had been turned upside down the moment Arabella arrived... Who else? Who else belonged on the list of people she brought nothing but pain to? Was Edgar next?

"Arabella, dear?" it was Katherine’s voice that broke through the inner shriekings, "I don’t like the way your breathing sounds, so I am coming in," the vampiress announced with a clear tone.

Slowly, Katherine slid inside after very carefully opening the door Arabella had slammed behind herself upon running away.

Her demeanor shifted in a blink once her eyes had landed on Arabella’s figure. She too adopted that common look of shock and urgency where eyebrows knitted together while her eyelids went further apart, disappearing inside her sockets.

It took the vampire a second to make sense out of the sight before her and dash forward to lift the young woman off the floor.

"Come now, uncurl those fingers and let us get out of here,"

Gently, Katherine pried Arabella’s little fingers open as she still clung to the bathtub for dear life.

"There we go," the vampire murmured softly, settling the young woman on her bed, "What happened?" she bent lower to meet her gaze.

But Arabella cast her eyes further down, the tears streaming down her cheeks helped prevent the dreaded eye contact.

Only then did she realize that Silas was nowhere in the room. It made sense for him to leave after her little stunt. Why would he stay? Null doubt aggravated by the disrespect and lack of manners she showed in his presence as he should be.

"Come now, why all the crying?" Katherine caressed her head soothingly, "You are safe now. Nothing and no one can hurt you for as long as you are under this roof,"

What about the people around her? Why did they have to suffer through her fault?

"Shhh... Please," the vampire poured a glass of water and extended it towards her, "Here drink this. Lord knows you need it,"

In response, Arabella turned her nose away for even water was heavy on her stomach. The storm of emotions crumpling her features wouldn’t clear, chest heaving and falling just as irregularly as her breathing.

"Alright, alright," Katherine settled the glass of water on the nightstand before cupping the young woman’s cheeks between her hands, "Come now, no more of that. You will make yourself sick,"

The choking on sobs did not slow down, let alone stop. Although Arabella did try since she didn’t want to irk Katherine too who already had enough on her plate, adding her own weight onto the kind vampire’s shoulders was unacceptable... Or so Arabella believed.

"I am sorry, I am so sorry," she mumbled through every cry.

"For what? What do you have to be sorry for, girl?" Katherine kept on softly stroking her cheeks for comfort.

To no avail, Arabella kept on repeating, "I am sorry...," like a broken record while sniveling and staring at nothing in particular.

Katherine couldn’t take that image any longer and simply brought the young woman’s face against her own figure for a warm embrace, clearly in the hopes it’d give a better result.
