Chapter 64 - Withering confidence

Clutching her locket, hand close to her beating heart, Arabella walked thoughtlessly along the hallways, merely following in Katherine's steps, believing she'd lead her back to her room where Silas had asked her to stay.

"Here we are. She awaits you,"

Katherine's voice had snapped Arabella out of her trance, just in time for her to realize they stood not in front of her room but facing an unfamiliar door, at the center of just as an unfamiliar hallway instead.

The young woman looked at Katherine with expecting eyes, waiting for an explanation that never came.

In response, the vampire tapped the door gently then stood still until the permission to enter reached them from within.

"Come in," a recognizable voice rose, muffled.

Both women made their way inside then halted after shutting the door behind themselves.

"I've brought Arabella with me just like you've asked, my Lady," said Katherine, bowing slightly.

The figure of a woman sat before a mirror as another threaded a wondrous looking silver comb through the Lady's long, silky hair.

The servant's action repeated over and over. A soft motion that birthed the most satisfying and calming of little sounds, barely failing to whisk Arabella's senses.

"Thank you, that'll be all," Lady Persephone let the servant know to stop brushing her hair with one graceful gesture from her hand, "Leave us, now,"

As soon as her words had blared, both Katherine and the servant exited the room without another word.

Frozen in place, Arabella kept her eyes down, wary of any breath or gesture that might upset the Lady.

"Sit," said Persephone after turning to face Arabella.

She picked a chair among the four surrounding a table in the room and bit her tongue.

"I hear a lot has happened since yesterday," the Lady's eyes studied Arabella from head to toe, "Do tell,"

Arabella had the conviction that the Lady had already been made aware of everything. Not a wisp of it would ever escape her considering how fast news travelled between those walls and yet... She wanted to hear it all from her mouth again.

Nevertheless, Arabella inhaled deeply then began to tell her story, "After going to bed, I awoke right before sunrise, but not in my room. In the pharmacy instead where I'd been freed from hypnosis,"

"Who was it that freed you from it?" the Lady asked.

"It was...," Arabella trailed off, her voice quieting down, "It was Master Silas that found me right before I crossed the gates out of the property," she paused, glancing at the Lady's firm demeanor for a split second, "He took me to the pharmacy,"

"What I truly would like to know is how he managed to end the spell. From what I understand, you two were alone in the pharmacy and Morgana only left just now," hands together, resting on her lap, she barely blinked while waiting for the answers to her questions.

"The master used his... Own blood to free me from the sorcery," eyes on her own trembling hands, Arabella refused eye contact.

The walls around her seemed to extend further, inducing the opposite effect they should have had.

Indeed, in lieu of releasing pressure, they instead gave Arabella the impression of shrinking as the room grew in size.

"His blood you say?" Persephone had uttered the question in a calm tone, but the look in her eyes betrayed her genuine surprise, "That is quite interesting," she muttered, staring straight at the huge window to their side.

Her attention, however, quickly flickered back onto Arabella. Well, more precisely on the locket around her neck, "It is a shame that Morgana couldn't be of more help, but in the meantime, you should be safe with the protection she provided,"

Nothing else was said after that as Lady Persephone stood off the cushion stool and strolled closer to the window, leaving Arabella to deal with her own inner voices.

To quell her howling thoughts, the young woman decided to examine the room surrounding her.

Not much different than the rest of the manor it was, asserting the theory that the entire place had been decorated to suit her tastes.

The colors white and silver dominated while others were present in mere traces.

Although besides being bigger in size, the room was very similar to Arabella's. Nothing in particular stood out, nothing that would reveal a shred of the Lady's personality. Unlike, say, Silas' room which was stacked with pieces of his own creation.

A sigh escaped Persephone first, before her voice reached Arabella, "I hear you've spent the entire day in his company,"

"Had the choice been mine, I would have remained in my room as you ordered me to, but I had no say in the matter,"

A little taken aback by the response of the young woman, the Lady's head turned slightly to the side.

There was an unusual level of confidence in her tone even though it was mostly overwhelmed by sadness as she'd spoken in such a downcast pitch, eyes on the ground.

"No, I understand that perfectly," the Lady sighed once more, "It seems the universe is determined to put you in each other's paths,"

"My apologies, my Ladies. I did not mean to sound so bold!"

And there she was! The old Arabella that almost never dared to speak without thinking her words over.

Before either of them had the chance to say anything else, a knock fell on the door.

The Lady's lips drew a side smirk as her eyes darted to the origin of the knock, while remaining completely silent.

Waiting for no permission, the person behind the door opened it and entered.

Silas' diamond eyes found Arabella's figure first thing upon coming inside.
