Unexpected Marriage: She is the Sugar Mommy!-Chapter 316: Met My Match
That day, Pomelo lay on Seraphina’s chest, listening to her heartbeat. She suddenly smiled sweetly and said, "Sister, you’re just like my mom."
"Silly girl." Seraphina ruffled Pomelo’s hair.
"Sister, I actually know that my parents don’t want me anymore. Pomelo has a very serious illness, and the doctor said it would cost a lot of money to treat it. If there’s no money for treatment, Pomelo will die." As Pomelo said these words, she was smiling, the curve of her eyebrows and eyes making one’s heart ache.
She rubbed Seraphina’s hand and continued, "I really don’t blame them at all. Pomelo doesn’t want to be a burden to mom and dad either. The teacher said that the grace of giving birth is greater than the sky, mom and dad gave Pomelo life, so Pomelo is really grateful to them. Sister, what is the world like after people die? After I die, can I still see the blue sky and white clouds? Can I still hear sounds?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? With me here, you won’t die." Seraphina pinched Pomelo’s pale little face, a trace of pain flickering in her eyes.
So young yet so understanding, such a pitiful little thing.
How could her parents bear to abandon her like this? Even if they can’t gather the medical expenses, they could at least spend more time with her.
Hearing such words from a child, Seraphina just felt indescribably bitter.
"Sister, will Chloe come to bring food for you today? I want to eat her butterfly shrimp." Pomelo held onto Seraphina’s hand, her eyes bright, looking somewhat similar to Jude when he sees hotpot.
No matter how mature and understanding, in the end, she’s still a child. A child’s nature cannot be changed.
Naturally, Seraphina was happy that she could lift her spirits, nodding and smiling, "Don’t worry, Chloe is on her way and will surely bring your favorite butterfly shrimp."
"Madam, Pomelo, I’ve come to bring food." Just as they were speaking, Chloe entered with several thermal containers.
Once Chloe arranged everything, she handed the tableware to the big and small on the bed.
As expected, Pomelo saw the butterfly shrimp she wanted and was pleasantly surprised. After quickly eating one, she smiled at Chloe and said, "Chloe, you’re really amazing. Everything you make is so delicious. This butterfly shrimp is especially tasty. I wonder if I can have it again tomorrow?"
Being praised like that, Chloe felt a bit embarrassed, knowing well she didn’t make those dishes. Whether there would be butterfly shrimp tomorrow, she wasn’t sure.
"About the butterfly shrimp, tomorrow..."
"There will definitely be some tomorrow. Hurry and eat." Not waiting for Chloe to finish, Seraphina interrupted her.
Chloe, steeling herself, said, "Yes, if you want, Chloe will make it for you every day."
"Wow! Chloe, you’re amazing! I love you to bits." Pomelo had been with Seraphina for quite a few days, getting familiar with the people around her.
Everyone knew about Pomelo’s situation, and while sympathizing with her, they were also drawn to her optimistic and positive attitude. Their kindness toward her wasn’t just because she was pitiful, but more so because this little girl was indeed likable.
But whenever they thought about Pomelo’s situation, everyone couldn’t help but sigh.
After delivering the meal, Chloe left, only to be blocked by Desmond Fairchild as she walked out.
"Master Fairchild, do you have any instructions?"
"Did she like it?" Desmond asked nonchalantly, though his palms were a bit sweaty, afraid Chloe would say Seraphina didn’t like his cooking.
Chloe nodded, "Master Fairchild, the lady has been enjoying your cooking a lot recently and has been eating quite a bit."
Desmond’s heart settled, his icy expression returning, "That’s good."
"Master Fairchild, there’s something I need to confess." Chloe, nervously glancing at Desmond, closed her eyes and, with determination, spoke, "Pomelo really likes your butterfly shrimp. I was afraid of being exposed earlier, so I promised to make it for her every day..."
Making decisions on behalf of a superior is a major taboo, and Chloe anticipated the consequences she’d have to face. But Pomelo was too pitiful; she couldn’t bear to refuse.
Unexpectedly, instead of being angry, Desmond waved it off nonchalantly, "I know."
"You’re not mad?" Chloe thought she had seen wrong.
"Mind your own business." Desmond didn’t plan to converse further with Chloe, casting a cold glance at her before turning away.
He had been visiting Seraphina quite a bit lately. While Seraphina used to look at him with disapproval, since Pomelo’s arrival, she had been slightly more courteous to him.
It seemed as if, with Pomelo around, Seraphina wouldn’t give him the cold shoulder, bringing him a step closer to winning her back.
Just a few plates of butterfly shrimp could win over a little girl, easy enough to handle.
Seeing Desmond’s calculating expression, Quentin Jennings couldn’t help but retort, "Master Fairchild, using even a child—isn’t that a bit shameless?"
"If you’re so free, I could arrange for you to mine in Africa," Desmond said with a slightly stern tone.
"I’m busy, you know, firefighting the rumors between Keith Hughes and your wife. Do you know how much effort that took? And speaking of Keith, he’s really unethical, taking advantage of the situation. Everywhere people are saying you’re the jerk, and he’s Seraphina’s true soulmate," Quentin couldn’t help but thumbs up as he thought of Keith’s tactics.
In the realm of pursuing women, both Keith and Desmond would use any means, making them quite like-minded.
If they weren’t rivals, Quentin thought Desmond and Keith would surely be great friends, given their equally scheming nature.
Whenever Keith spread a rumor, Desmond would immediately handle the PR, with the two of them quietly competing for a long while.
Though Seraphina, being the subject, was oblivious to their hidden chess match, Quentin, an outsider, saw it all clearly.
The back and forth was truly exciting.
"Master Fairchild, I think you’ve met your match this time. If you don’t put in more effort, there’s a high chance your wife will end up with someone else," Quentin was truly worried for Desmond.
Lately, Desmond had been pursuing Seraphina relentlessly. Not only did he have to manage the affairs of the Cloudsea Group, fend off Eric Holt’s advances, and keep an eye on the situation at Diamond Island, but he also had to watch Nina Kerr to see she didn’t cause trouble.
He was so busy his feet barely touched the ground, and he still had to play relationship advisor for Desmond. He didn’t know if he owed him from a past life.
Desmond frowned slightly, his tone unfriendly, "I won’t give Seraphina to him."
Quentin sighed, "It’s not just about whether you give her or not anymore. It’s clear that your wife’s heart leans towards him. You’ve done so many hurtful things to her before, she won’t easily forgive you. If during this time Keith aggressively pursues her, there’s no guarantee she won’t be moved."
After all, Keith was attentive to Seraphina, always on call. If Seraphina were to compare him with Desmond, Keith would undoubtedly win hands down.
