Universe Infinite Canteen-Chapter 729: Sous Chef
Sun Mei respectfully greeted Old Wang upon entering the kitchen, then her gaze shifted towards the fish in his hand.
But when she saw it, she was startled, "Ah, has the impact of Japan secretly dumping nuclear wastewater been this severe? Why does this eel have six eyes?"
"Although I'm also against Japan's act of secretly dumping nuclear waste, this has actually got nothing to do with them."
Ma Lu said, "This fish is named [Six-eyed Leopard Sea Eel], it lives in outer space and naturally looks like this."
Sun Mei gave him a 'do-you-think-I'm-an-idiot' look, "Even though I'm not a science student, I know that space is a vacuum, how could there possibly be fish?"
"This is a long story, and it's actually the reason I've brought you here today."
Ma Lu's demeanor became serious, "Sun Mei, are you ready to accept the truth of the Universe?"
"The truth of the Universe?" Sun Mei didn't know what Ma Lu was getting at, arms crossed, "Weren't you supposed to bring me here to learn as an apprentice? How did it turn to the truth of the Universe?"
"Because if you're going to be an apprentice, you'll inevitably come into contact with the truth of the Universe," said Ma Lu, "and this will likely have a permanent impact on your life."
"So mysterious," Sun Mei mumbled, "Are you some sort of hidden sect or something?"
"No, we're much bigger than hidden sects. Once you take this step, there's no turning back, so you better think carefully before you answer me..."
"Enough with the dilly-dallying," Sun Mei interrupted Ma Lu, "as long as it's not illegal and can help me improve my culinary skills, I'll definitely not back down."
"Good," Ma Lu didn't waste more words, he took a deep breath and quickly said, "Old Wang is actually a mechanical life form from another Cosmic Plane who stowed away to Earth and lost his memory before I picked him up. His profession is Cosmic Chef, he doesn't normally need to eat or drink water; just needs to be charged to work vigorously in the kitchen.
"The dishes prepared by Universe Infinite Canteen are so unique not only because of Old Wang's extraordinary abilities but also because of the ingredients we use.
"All these ingredients are personally brought back by me from other Cosmic Planes, they taste first-rate but also come in a variety of odd shapes, which is why I never allow anyone else to enter the kitchen."
"......"

It took Sun Mei a full half a minute of silence before she said, "Youyou can enter though, can't she?"
"She's an exception, because she's not from this plane."
"Alright, but we're still far from April Fools', right?" said Sun Mei, "Isn't it a bit early for this kind of joke?"
Ma Lu wasn't surprised by her reaction; he snapped his fingers, "Old Wang, show her something."
Upon hearing this, Old Wang put down his kitchen knife, turned to look at Sun Mei, and the next moment a seam appeared on his forehead, then his cheeks slowly opened along the seam, revealing the internal components underneath.
Sun Mei's eyes rolled back, and she fell backward, but fortunately, Ma Lu was quick and caught her, complaining at Old Wang, "Damn, was there any need to make it so creepy?!"
"Weren't you the one who asked me to demonstrate? And you said to let her witness the truth of the Universe," Old Wang replied, puzzled.
"Yes, but you're supposed to do it step by step. Start by showing her your little metallic tentacles first, then go from there."
"Oh, I understand now."
"Too late now, come here, give me a hand, let's carry her to the sofa."
Sun Mei didn't know how long she had been unconscious, she even had a nightmare where Chef Wang was teaching her to cook fish, but then suddenly, he bit off one of her arms with his mouth open.
Sun Mei let out a scream, and when she opened her eyes, her forehead was covered in fine beads of sweat.
Upon waking, her first move was to check on her right hand and heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing it was still there.
Then she looked around and did not see Ma Lu or Old Wang anywhere.
Just at that moment, the wooden mannequin that had been still against the wall suddenly turned its head and began walking towards her.
Sun Mei jumped up from the couch in fright and started running, but the thudding sounds behind her were getting closer.
Without even time to put on her shoes, Sun Mei ran to the front door, flung it open, and desperately escaped.
She didn't dare to look back the entire way, not stopping until she reached the gatehouse to catch her breath. Looking back, she could vaguely see the miniature wooden figure standing behind the door, half its face showing, staring at her from afar.
Sun Mei felt her hair stand on end and hastily took out her phone to call a Didi, originally planning to go home.
But feeling unsafe alone in her rented apartment, she decided to go straight to a nearby mall instead.
The bustling crowd in the mall afforded Sun Mei some calm as she bought herself a pair of shoes and then ordered a cup of milk tea from a teashop.
Holding the steaming milk tea and sitting by the window, Sun Mei's mind replayed the harrowing experience, interspersed with the terrifying nightmare and what Ma Lu had said in the kitchen, which she had originally taken as a joke.
Sun Mei forced herself to calm down; the fact that she hadn't been silenced or hurt at least indicated that Ma Lu and Old Wang probably harbored no malice toward her.
It reminded her that to untie a bell, she must find the ringer; to clear up everything, it appeared she needed to find Ma Lu.
So, a quarter-hour later, Sun Mei finally made up her mind, took out her mobile phone, and dialed the number again. Ma Lu's voice came from the other end.
"Hello, have you woken up?"
"Where are you?" Sun Mei asked with a deep voice.
"Me? I'm at the restaurant. We're opening this afternoon. Since you hadn't woken up, I came over with Old Wang first. Wait, didn't you see the note I left for you? Before I left, I told Unhappy to give you the note when you woke up."
"What note? Do you know that your wooden mannequin tried to kill me?" Sun Mei said emotionally, "Just now, it chased after me all the way, and even when I got outside, it wouldn't give up, still staring at me. What on earth is that thing?"
"..."
"Eh, that's Unhappy." Ma Lu paused for a moment, "But it's okay, since you're already out, go home and get some rest. I'll give you two days off to process everything."
"No, I'm going to the restaurant now. I won't leave until you explain to me what this is all about."
Half an hour later, Sun Mei returned to the Universe Infinite Canteen, where Ma Lu led her straight to the back kitchen. There, she saw the finger-sized Valkyrie people busily at work, some washing dishes, others peeling.
Sun Mei felt another huge jolt to her psyche, but with her mental preparation, she didn't faint this time.
Ma Lu clapped his hands and spoke, "Everyone, pause your work for a moment. I'd like to introduce you. This is Chef Sun Mei, she is about to take up the role of sous-chef in the kitchen."
