Chapter 934: Chapter 934: I Bet You Wouldn’t Dare

Just as everyone was focused on the vehicle, a burly man with a dark face descended from it.

His figure was robust and imposing, exuding a formidable air.

"Brother Yu, come take a look! Damn it, this is something else. We should get a few of these to try out someday!"

The man was none other than Tie Zhuzi. Upon seeing ten off-road vehicles parked there, he shouted excitedly and went straight over to touch the side of one, his hands running along it enthusiastically.

"Who are you? Step away from there!" someone in the car yelled.

But Tie Zhuzi completely ignored the shout, moving around the field vehicle and examining it closely. In his mind, he was already fantasizing about when they could get their hands on a few to drive themselves.

When Xiang Yu spotted the field vehicle, he too felt a twinge of excitement. Two years ago, when he left the military, these vehicles had just started being introduced. He had even received special training to operate them. He never expected to see them here today.

In contrast to Tie Zhuzi’s enthusiasm, Gao Zhitao remained much more composed. His frequent exposure to these vehicles during his visits to military units had dulled the novelty for him.

Covered in bandages, Gao Zhitao was pushed out by Xiang Yu and Xiaoxuan.

When Kong Shenghui saw Gao Zhitao, he rushed forward anxiously.

"How was it? How did you explain things to your grandfather?" Kong Shenghui asked urgently.

"My hands and feet don’t work right now, I couldn’t call him," Gao Zhitao replied in a tone of grievance.

"Call him now!" Kong Shenghui said, pulling out his phone and dialing without hesitation. He could no longer afford to ponder whether Gao Zhitao was telling the truth.

The call connected, but Gao Mantang hung up immediately without answering.

"What about your phone?" Kong Shenghui shouted.

Gao Zhitao gave an awkward laugh and replied, "I left my phone back at the hospital."

Frustrated, Kong Shenghui moved behind Gao Zhitao, pushing him forward and ordering, "Go stop them! You’re the only one who can do it now!"

Xiang Yu didn’t say a word, standing still where he was, knowing that no one here would harm Gao Zhitao.

Most of the military personnel knew Gao Zhitao, as he had always been a standout character in the army, recognizable to everyone.

When they saw him step out of the car, a collective sigh of relief swept through them.

"Hello, brothers! I’ve been sent here to stop you all," Gao Zhitao yelled out.

The military personnel burst into laughter when they heard him shout, while Kong Shenghui looked as though he might explode from frustration.

Time was pressing, and yet this kid was still joking around.

Inside the administrative building, the police began whispering amongst themselves when they spotted Gao Zhitao.

"So that’s our newly appointed bureau chief, huh?"

"He’s so handsome, even injured he’s still looking great!"

"He single-handedly saved the shopping mall tower! He’s my personal hero!"

The female officers were practically starry-eyed, while the male officers couldn’t help but feel unsettled.

"Hmph, as if he single-handedly saved the mall. The reports totally exaggerated it."

"Oh, come on, it’s just how the world of these privileged kids works. No need to take it seriously."

"It’s obviously his big-shot grandfather pulling strings behind the scenes!"

Everyone had something to say, while Fang Shichao approached from the distance, brimming with disdain.

"Director Gao, fancy seeing you here," Fang Shichao sneered.

Their relationship had never been great, and now that Gao Zhitao had ascended to the position of bureau chief, Shichao’s envy burned even more brightly.

"Oh, Shichao! What brings you here?" Gao Zhitao quickly asked.

"All thanks to your grandfather, of course. He doesn’t show up himself but sends a handful of useless soldiers, playing the numbers game—what kind of tactic is that?" Fang Shichao retorted.

"Hey, watch what you say! What do you mean by ’playing the numbers game’?" Zhang Dacheng interjected sternly.

"How is it not playing the numbers game? Look how many people you’ve brought, even deploying field vehicles. Hmph!" Fang Shichao said, his eyes filled with scorn.

"Fine, we’re more than you. But look at how many people you’ve got!" Zhang Dacheng countered with a cold snort, throwing a sideways glance toward the police station.

Fang Shichao stood there, his head raised as he provocatively eyed Zhang Dacheng. "If you don’t want to rely on sheer numbers, then how about a wager?" he challenged.

Tie Zhuzi, who had been admiring the field vehicles, pricked up his ears at the mention of a wager and walked over curiously. "What kind of bet?" he asked.

Fang Shichao didn’t even acknowledge Tie Zhuzi, unaware of his identity. His attention remained fixed on Zhang Dacheng. "Pick three soldiers from your group to spar with three from ours. If you win, I’ll keep my mouth shut and we’ll leave. If you lose, release your captives immediately," Fang Shichao proposed.

His voice rang loud and clear, ensuring everyone present heard it. He knew that backing out of such a public challenge would be a blow to their reputation.

From afar, Xiang Yu frowned. Fang Shichao’s scheming was evident.

Most of the paramilitary police were here, so finding three capable soldiers among them would hardly be a problem.

Everyone was listening intently, and sure enough, all eyes turned toward Zhang Dacheng.

Officers from the administrative building came outside to watch the spectacle. The surrounding soldiers, feeling insulted, also fixed their expectant gazes on Zhang Dacheng.

All attention was centered on Zhang Dacheng, as both the soldiers and the paramilitary police awaited a decisive response.

But the matter was too significant for Zhang Dacheng to decide on his own. He hesitated as he stood there.

"What’s wrong? Afraid? Is this all the courage you soldiers have? Aren’t you always boasting about being the strongest in solo combat? Now you don’t even have the guts to step forward?" Fang Shichao deliberately raised his voice to taunt them. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"Fight him! That cocky bastard’s asking for it!" Tie Zhuzi fumed as he stepped forward angrily. He couldn’t stand Fang Shichao’s arrogance.

Xiang Yu was also growing irate. He couldn’t tolerate anyone degrading soldiers, given his deep sentimental ties to the military.

Kong Shenghui, standing to the side, was visibly uncomfortable as well. Having grown up in the military, he shared the same emotional attachment to soldiers. Fang Shichao’s insults felt like a personal affront.

Despite the tension, Kong Shenghui understood the urgency of the situation. If this wager could defuse things, it might be worth considering—even if it risked inflaming tensions between the soldiers and the police.

Uncertain, Zhang Dacheng pulled out his phone, intending to seek Gao Mantang’s advice.

But just as he was about to dial, Gao Mantang’s call came through on its own.

Taking the call, Zhang Dacheng moved to a quieter spot.

"What’s happening? Why aren’t you back yet?" Gao Mantang roared into the phone. He’d expected the arrival of the ten field vehicles to resolve things quickly.

Feeling a deep sense of guilt, Zhang Dacheng explained the situation as it stood, including Gao Zhitao’s presence on-site.

Upon hearing that his grandson was there, Gao Mantang immediately shouted, "Make sure Zhitao stays safe!"

Understanding Gao Mantang’s attachment to his grandson, Zhang Dacheng quickly vowed, "Rest assured, Commander. I’ll stake my life to protect him!"

After that assurance, Zhang Dacheng mentioned Fang Shichao’s wager, emphasizing that everyone around had heard it.

In truth, Zhang Dacheng was inclined toward accepting the challenge. As a soldier himself, he carried his own sense of pride. With such a public dare hanging over them, they could hardly back down...
