Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 228: Where is your girlfriend?
Han Youzhen’s approach was strikingly reminiscent of those "love debt collectors" that suddenly appear in TV dramas. It was no wonder Wang Jian’s mind started racing, though his speculations were way off the mark.
While Wang Jian was perplexed and reflecting, Han Youzhen noticed his furrowed brow and asked again, "What about your girlfriend, oppa?"
"Girlfriend?"
Wow, is she really someone I knew from Capital City? The moment Han Youzhen asked her question, it directly confirmed the suspicion in Wang Jian’s mind. After all, the only time he ever had a girlfriend was when he lived in Capital City. By that logic, could it be that I met Han Youzhen when I was with my ex?
However, even after narrowing down the time frame, Wang Jian was still baffled and couldn’t recall who Han Youzhen was. He could only reply awkwardly, "We broke up... She’s my ex-girlfriend now."
Han Youzhen was startled at first, then said with some embarrassment, "Is that so? I thought you two were very affectionate."
That’s right. To be that intimate in a train compartment, they must have been deeply in love. If I loved a man, it wouldn’t matter whether it was in a train compartment or anywhere else, as long as he was happy. That must have been a sign of their affection.
Hearing the word "affectionate," and then thinking of his ex, Wang Jian laughed out loud. "Affectionate? I guess we were. But that’s all in the past now. As for that ex of mine..." As they walked back from the restroom, Wang Jian continued, "Between love and bread, she chose bread."
"Bread?"
Seeing Han Youzhen’s confusion, Wang Jian took the time to explain the meaning behind the phrase.
It was then that Han Youzhen realized. "Oh, it means she thought you were too poor."
Wang Jian rolled his eyes at her blunt commentary.
Han Youzhen hurriedly bowed, her face flushing with embarrassment, not even noticing that her neckline was gaping wide open. "I didn’t mean you, specifically."
"No worries, no worries." Wang Jian laughed as well. He had long since moved past that relationship, and besides, his current circumstances were excellent. "It’s all in the past." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
But an idea was taking root in Han Youzhen’s mind. Based on my family background, experience, and travels around the world, this private kitchen meal we had today couldn’t have cost less than ten million Korean won. This country doesn’t fall short of any other when it comes to luxury. And since this is a private kitchen—the kind of place you can’t just eat at even if you want to—the price would only be higher, not lower. Would someone who can afford a meal like this really be poor? Or, to use Oppa’s words, would he really ’lack bread’?
Han Youzhen shook her head, feeling a sense of pity for the woman she had seen in the train compartment. If Wang Jian’s ex-girlfriend knew about this, she would definitely be full of regret.
"Oppa, why didn’t you stay in Capital City?"
Wang Jian smiled. "That’s a bit of a complicated question."
"Oh?" Han Youzhen blinked her large eyes, looking puzzled. But seeing that Wang Jian didn’t elaborate, and since they were almost back at the dining table, she didn’t press further.
When they returned, Chairman Kang gave them an extra glance. That woman had clearly followed Wang Jian to the restroom. Now, seeing them return together, Chairman Kang once again thought to himself that it was too much of a coincidence; there was definitely something going on between them.
Chairman Kang narrowed his eyes, a sudden wave of melancholy washing over him. To think I’ve noticed so many little details... If I used these powers of observation to pursue women, I’d probably have a girlfriend by now. I’d be better off using this effort to study...
This sudden epiphany motivated Chairman Kang to focus on his meal, and he stopped observing Wang Jian and the woman from Han Country. In contrast to the newly awakened Chairman Kang, Yu Yen and Wang Lei clearly had no such concerns; their focus was solely on eating. This was especially true for Wang Lei, who, after his near social death the previous night, had completely abandoned any ideas about Han Youzhen. Watching them, Chairman Kang felt a pang of exasperation, which he channeled into his own motivation to eat. As a result, the three of them dug in even more enthusiastically.
Ever since Wang Jian started to think that he might have met Han Youzhen before, his attitude toward her had changed, becoming much friendlier.
After finishing their meal, they drove toward the Heavenly Lake scenic area.
The road weaved through the mountains, flanked on both sides by shady green trees. Sunlight sprinkled through the gaps in the leaves, and if you stretched your hand out the window, you could feel the alternating coolness and warmth as you passed between shadow and light. In the lingering late-autumn heat, the feeling was incredibly refreshing.
Seeing Wang Jian stick his hand out the window, and with no cars ahead or behind, Han Youzhen followed suit, experiencing the same simple joy. However, she also noticed something odd. When Yu Yen and Wang Lei, who were sitting in the middle row of the MPV, stretched their hands out, they wore strange grins and seemed to be grabbing at the air. I don’t get what those two are doing, but I’m not going to ask. It looks kind of sleazy.
The man beside her was a different story. When the sunlight fell through the window onto Wang Jian’s face, he looked exceptionally handsome. Han Youzhen seemed to forget her initial disdain and disgust toward Wang Jian when they first met.
After chatting with him for a bit, I can feel such a comfortable aura from him... That incident in the train car doesn’t seem so abhorrent anymore. On the contrary, there’s nothing wrong with a couple doing that sort of thing together. If I were his girlfriend, I’d also be willing to... do that... with such a handsome and gentle oppa. A train car? What’s the big deal about that?
Gazing at Wang Jian, Han Youzhen pulled her hand back inside the car. It’s enough just to appreciate a handsome, artistic guy. I don’t need to join in.
"We’re almost there. See it?" Wang Jian turned his head, his gaze meeting Han Youzhen’s. She immediately looked away, and Wang Jian, not thinking much of it, simply pointed through the window at a lake in the distance.
This lake was surprisingly nestled on a mountainside, encircled by peaks, creating the impression that it was being cradled in the hands of the mountains. And though it wasn’t raining, a layer of clouds and mist swirled above it. From afar, it looked like a fairy-tale paradise. Even before they arrived, everyone felt that the lake truly lived up to its name, Heavenly Lake.
"It’s so beautiful!" Han Youzhen’s eyes began to sparkle. The winding mountain road now put Heavenly Lake directly on her side of the car. She propped her head on her hand, rested her arm on the window frame, and let her whole body relax.
They had a driver arranged by Cai Qiong for this trip, so even Chairman Kang was free to admire the scenery. Echoing Han Youzhen’s sentiment, he remarked with a sigh, "It really is beautiful. I’ve been here for so many days and never came out to see the sights. What a pity."
Wang Jian chuckled. "Weren’t you here to study medicine? What are you doing thinking about sightseeing?"
Chairman Kang wore a sheepish expression, but Wang Jian didn’t tease him further. Instead, he said, "There will be plenty of opportunities in the future. If you really want to, you could even venture deep into the mountains to experience true nature, though you might get killed by wild animals."
When Wang Jian brought up studying medicine, Yu Yen and Wang Lei exchanged a look. They finally remembered the other purpose of their trip: to find out if their senior, Chairman Kang, really had any skills. But just as they were about to ask, they were distracted by Wang Jian’s talk of deep forests and wild animals.
Wang Jian recounted his encounter with the poachers, glossing over the more serious details but mentioning that he had suffered a gunshot wound. A man should have some scars, some stories to tell. It’s something to be proud of.
He even pulled down the collar of his shirt, showing the large scar on his shoulder to the others. Even with his Qi Cultivation, Wang Jian didn’t have the ability to make scars vanish completely. The mark immediately captured everyone’s attention.
"That looks serious," Han Youzhen said, seemingly capable only of expressing astonishment. She even reached out and touched his shoulder, which startled Wang Jian. He shot her a glare before quickly pulling his shirt back up.
Only then did Han Youzhen realize her action had crossed a line. As she sat up straight, she saw that the men in the front seats were all staring at her in surprise. She and Wang Jian were in the last row of the MPV, with Chairman Kang in the front passenger seat and Yu Yen and Wang Lei in the middle row. A single glance back was all it took for them to see her every move.
Chairman Kang could only roll his eyes and quietly change the subject. "We’re almost at Heavenly Lake. There aren’t any ferocious beasts here, are there?"
His question brought Yu Yen and the others back to their senses. "There shouldn’t be, right?" Yu Yen said. "This is a scenic area. If a beast appeared and hurt someone, it would be a huge problem."
Wang Lei nodded in agreement, turning his gaze to Wang Jian, waiting for his input.
Wang Jian, however, was lost in thought. He remembered hearing stories of beasts injuring people back in the nineties, but in recent years, it was rare to see even a common snake in a place with so many visitors, let alone a dangerous animal.
"Don’t worry," Wang Jian reassured them. "This area is well-developed. Even if a wild animal did show up, the forest rangers would issue an early warning and have us leave."
