Chapter 30: Halfway

Back in the underground tunnel, Francis loomed over the two Special Category bodies, now riddled with bullet holes.

He looked at them without rushing. The sight brought back old memories from his past life.

Moments of planning, movement, and silence after the gruesome job was done.

First was the sword user.

With the corpse already mangled by the hail of bullets, Francis was able to easily devour the liver.

[DING]

[Congratulations, Host. You have devoured a Special Category human liver. System is now assessing its value.]

[+60 Human Liver]

[Innate Talent Absorbed: Trajectory Reading]

[This talent boosts the user’s cognitive processing for a short burst of five seconds. During that time, the user can read and predict incoming attack paths.]

[It does not guarantee perfect prediction. The faster and more complex the attack is, the harder it becomes to track and respond accurately.] 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Francis gave a small nod in his mind.

Now he understood how Jax had managed to parry the bullets at the start. It was not pure luck.

If the sword user had a stronger weapon and reacted faster, he might have survived the bullet storm.

Francis used the word ’might’ because, in reality, deflecting bullets was extremely hard.

Only a few could even come close to that level of mastery.

The only person who might pull it off with ease was the spear user from before. That person had left a strong impression on Francis.

Just remembering that fight was enough to make anyone feel humbled.

’I still need to improve a lot.’

Strength was relative. Although he had won this time, it was more due to his intelligence than his actual power.

Strategy, however, had its limits. The stronger the opponent, the less effective such tactics become.

For example.

One could prepare for a tank rolling in—but if a nuclear missile fell from above, there was nothing to do but pray.

Next, he moved to the next corpse. This one still carried a look of regret on its face before taking his last breath.

If only he had trusted his gut feeling more, maybe they would not have been so easily played.

But all of that was in the past now. In the end, only those who stayed multiple steps ahead could survive in this dog-eat-dog world.

[+70 Human Liver]

[Innate Talent Absorbed: Shockwave Emission]

[Description: Allows the host to discharge pressurized kinetic energy from any point of the body. Force scales with Muscular Density.]

[The Host can now apply this trait to any organism he merges with.]

This is more like it,’ he nodded in satisfaction.

Although the ability to predict trajectories was powerful in its own right, it was a slow-burn skill—one that required him to grow stronger before it could yield truly effective results.

Shockwave emission, however, was something he could use immediately.

More importantly, it could be seamlessly integrated with his other abilities, greatly enhancing its overall effectiveness.

Francis would have loved to test it at once, but securing more "livers" came first.

He turned his focus on the remaining corpses, devouring their livers with the indulgence of an all-you-can-eat feast.

Afterward, he paused and checked his counter.

[Human Liver 446/1,000]

He was already halfway through his mission, and it only strengthened his resolve to finish it as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, he could no longer afford to stay here. The next group would likely arrive fully prepared from the start.

That meant stronger Special Categories, along with the proper preparation and equipment to deal with a beast like him.

Francis stepped away from the bodies.

The danger was far from over.

No, what happened here was only the prologue to something much bigger.
