Chapter 65: 65:Birth

Duchess Lilith sat in her office, signing papers from the monthly duchy meetings of the vessels. They had been getting a bit too greedy for their own good.

One dared to ask about her dear son’s marriage. She wondered if she had become too soft or the Bloodmoor family had been too silent that the people forgot their horror.

Maybe a mixture of both, she came to a conclusion.

"Duchess, Count Sisley has shown the most growth in revenue and development. "

The duchess’s hand paused at what her first advisor said and looked up at the older man who was standing in front of her.

"Isn’t he the count that my son unilaterally placed in the seat without my permission?"

She asked, trying to recall the young lad’s face.

"Yes duchess, young master seems to have a good eye for people. The new count is doing incredibly well."

The duchess nodded. She went back to signing the mountain of papers, her interest waning. She trusted her son’s judgment, and she knew he would never disappoint her.

"Young master Lucian!"

A shout from the outside broke through the scribbling of pens in the office. The duchess placed her pen on the table forcefully. It broke in half the ink splashing on her hand and some of the papers.

She took off the gloves she was wearing and threw them aside.

"And who is that making too much noise?"

She asked in resignation. This had not been the first. For the last three days, she had been in the office working with both her children, visiting once in a while to talk and maybe massage her shoulders.

"It’s one of the young master’s friends, I believe his name is Abelion, he arrived just the day before yesterday. "

The duchess stood up, walked to the open window, and looked down.

Lucian, the ever nonchalant, was surprisingly listening to the man talk while the bags were being placed into the carriage. The duchess signed and closed the window behind her.

"When are they leaving?"

She asked her advisor. The man straightened even more at her gaze.

"It should be in one sand glass. The academy will begin in four days."

The duchess nodded. She had been too busy to pay attention to her children and they seemed to understand her dilemma. None of them had been pestering her as much as usual.

"Let’s go and bid both of them farewell. "

She said and headed for the door. She knew the result of ignoring them, especially Lucian, might turn out catastrophic. That child might just refuse to go to school until she appears.

The duchess shook her head in mild amusement at the thought.

"Mother you’re here!"

Lucian’s exclamation as he took her into his arms snapped her out of her reverie. She restrained the need to chuckle at his childishness and patted his back softly and stepped back.

She had an image to maintain. Unlike Seraph, who had taken after her, Lucian had developed in a completely different way.

To put it simply, Lucian was too insensitive to everyone around him unless you were important to him, but that also had a limit.

He does what he wants whenever he wants to as long as it ticks his mood. She had dealt with a lot of his tantrums to know how dangerous he can be when that smile turned to a frown.

"Have you prepared everything?"

The duchess asked Lucian who smiled and nodded. He took her palm and placed it on his beating heart a bright smile on his face.

"I miss you a lot mother."

He said softly, his mask dropped just a flash, but the duchess was able to catch the snippet of obsession he kept so well hidden behind his smile.

"I’ll miss you too."

The duchess said with a small, graceful smile gracing her face. She removed her hand from his grip and turned to her daughter who was looking at their interaction.

Her clever yet naive daughter.

"Won’t you miss your own mother?"

She asked her smile widening. Seraph looked at her before she reluctantly walked towards her and pulled her into a hug.

"Take care of yourselves, both of you. If anything were to occur, make sure to contact me."

Duchess said as she watched the two get into the carriage. Lucian’s maid, Luna, bowed to her before entering another carriage. She stood there and watched as Lucian and his friends left the estate, the only safe place in the world for them.

Maybe she was too overprotective, she sighed softly to herself and walked back into the house.

"Something doesn’t feel right Osmound."

The duchess said suddenly. Although she always experienced this feeling whenever any of her children left the estate, this was a bit too much.

"It might just be the shock of seeing them leave."

Osmound, the advisor, said. The duchess paused then nodded.

"It’s just that my heart is beating faster than usual."

"How about rest, duchess? You have been up for five days with little to no sleep. "

The duchess looked at her still-opened office door and paused, looking around at the servants who were trying as best as they could to avoid her gaze.

"Alright, you can go back to rest."

Duchess Lilith lay in her bed, but couldn’t sleep; the feeling persisted. Her hands were getting more sweaty, and the speed of her heart beating was a bit faster.

"Don’t tell me it’s that."

She was very familiar with this feeling since she had experienced it when she went.

During lucians birth.

This made her sink into the dark void that was his birth.

Duchess Lilith had just finished her usual rounds around the estate and came back to her office to continue working.

"Duchess you shouldn’t work too much, you’re with child and about to deliver."

The midwife who had helped with Seraph’s birth said worriedly. Of course, she had reason to be; the duchess was a workaholic, and despite all the persuasions, she didn’t listen.

"I’ve been carrying it for almost eighteen months, a few more days of work will not hurt the child."

The duchess dismissed the midwife. How was she supposed not to work when she had no one who could help her?

"Should I call the duke? He’s sleeping in the garden."

The midwife said with bitterness laced in her voice. The duchess didn’t feel annoyed or bad, this was nothing more than a transactional relationship.

He gave her children and she would pay him for his seed.

This was the easiest way to produce pure bloods and maintain the Bloodmoor line. She wasn’t the first matriarch to do this.

With the help of the doctor, she had been able to inseminate herself since she couldn’t allow herself to bed some rogue vampire.

"No, I will do this by myself..."

Her words were cut off when a sharp pain shot through her body. It was more painful than getting stabbed, causing her to let out a small scream.

"Duchess! Duchess! Servants, the duchess has gone into labor."

While being helped to the delivery room, Duchess Lilith could barely recognise the surrounding area from all the pain she was experiencing.

"What...what ..is happening. "

She said between breaths as her body decided to push, to get rid of the child it now deemed an invader.

She muffled her screams by biting into her pillows. In her seventy years, she has never felt such pain.

"I can see the head, push as hard as you can."

Ten hours of pure agony had passed through the whole birthing process, and it seemed her endurance had paid off. The child was born smoothly.

The moment the infant was placed before her, she smiled. He looked exactly like her, and she was glad that both of her children took her looks.

The door burst open at that moment, destroying her bonding moment. Seraph was the first to come in, innocent smile as she ran to the bed and jumped up.

She looked at her brother who opened his red eyes and looked at her curiously.

"You have to kill that thing."

The duchess bristled at that. She pulled Lucian closer to her bosom and looked at the man, their surrogate father, venomously.

"You have finished what you are supposed to, you will be given your compensation."

The duchess’s voice cut through the tension. The man’s red eyes were dilated as he looked at the already sleeping Lucian as though he were a demon.

Seraph moved closer to her mother, trying to automatically trying to cover her brother from those eyes.

"No, Duchess Lilith, you have to kill that abomination. "

The man walked to the already weak duchess, failing to notice her dropping mood. He reached out and tried to pull the child from her hands but the duchess slapped his hands away.

"As I have said, no one is killing my child. You can take your compensation and leave. This is your only chance."

The duchess’s cold but weak voice said while looking at the man venomously.

"No, you have to, I’m not leaving until I see its body burnt, or I’ll be reporting you to the council!"

The man shouted as he tried to take Lucian again, but failed. Looking carefully anyone could see the determination and desperation in his eyes.

"Seraph, how about you hold your brother. "

The duchess placed the infant in her daughter’s small hands and got out of the still bloodied bed. Blood dripped down her legs her body still experiencing the pain from childbirth.

It was taking longer to heal than normal.

"I gave you a chance."

She said coldly and a purple spell circle appeared beside her.

"Duchess, I’m doing this for the good of..."

The separation of his head from his body cut through his reasoning. The midwives and the maids in the room scrambled back their eyes filled with fear.

On the day Lucian was welcomed into the world, there was a massacre in the duchy. A secret that only one survivor knew of.

His ten-year-old sister, who held him tightly in her arms.
